Dog ownership is like a rainbow.
Puppies are the joy at one end.
Old dogs are the treasure at the other.

Blind Woman, Dog Kicked Out of Restaurant

By Barry Hiett

NewsChannel 19's Barry Hiett reports

Pamela Ewald lost her eyesight when she was only 22. But with the help from
her guide dog Kate, Pamela is able to get around relatively easy.

She uses Kate's eyes like they were her own.

Friday, Pamela and her friend Brenda decided to get some Chinese food. They
paid a visit to China Cook on Winchester Road. But when Pamela took Kate
inside, she found out there was a problem. A manager, Pamela says, wasn't
thrilled to see the 5-year-old black Lab in her restaurant.

"She treated us very ugly. She told me that I had to put my dog outside,
that she was not allowed in the restaurant," says Pamela.

Pamela says she tried to explain to the lady that Kate goes everywhere she
goes.

"I told the young lady that she was a service dog. She was my eyes. And she
said she didn't care what she was, she was a dog and to get her outside."

Pamela says she then called police to try to get an officer to explain to
the manager it's legal to allow service dogs inside restaurants. Still, she
says the manager wouldn't budge.

The incident, Pamela says, made her angry. She says she later called
Newschannel 19 with one goal in mind.

"To understand that our service dogs are very well minded, are very clean
and they are more obedient than some of the people and children that come
into their establishment," says Pamela.

The manager at China Cook didn't want to go on camera but she does say she
won't allow dogs in her restaurant because of local health department rules.
