Dog ownership is like a rainbow.
Puppies are the joy at one end.
Old dogs are the treasure at the other.

19 Taking Action Update: Restaurant Changes Policy

By Amber Stuart

Caption: "Kate", Pamela Ewald's guide dog

NewsChannel 19's Amber Stuart reports:

China Cook on Winchester Road has changed its policy. They will now allow
guide dogs in their restaurants, just no pets.

This is a follow-up to a 19 Taking Action investigation we brought you last
week.

Renny Ye, an employee at China Cook says they made a mistake on Friday. They

didn't know the law when they denied Pamela Ewald service when she brought
her guide dog, Kate, inside the restaurant.

Ewald called Huntsville Police when the restaurant wouldn't allow her guide
dog in with her. Police encouraged Ewald to call NewsChannel 19.

Now, they've squared that away with the Madison County Health Department.
They're allowing guide dogs and want to do a good business.

Nancy Pendegraph has been using a guide dog for 14 years, and is an advocate

for guide dog teams.

"Our service animals are trained," said Pendegraph.

She says she doesn't like what happened to Pamela Ewald. Nancy just wants
business owners to understand it's a federal law.

"A service animal, a guide dog, may accompany that person," said Pendegraph.

"If a person fails to admit them, they can be fined."

Nancy says she's not out to put people out of business -- she just wants
them to be aware of the law.

"Our goal is not to fine people. Ours is to have people understand," said
Pendegraph. "We won't disrupt their business. We want the independence to go

there, but we don't want to take anything away from them. It's to give us
our independence."

Before we left the China Cook restaurant on Monday, Renny Ye told
NewsChannel 19 the staff would call Pamela Ewald to apologize to her for
denying service on Friday.
