hi Brian my name is Candalaria most people call me Candy, I get your emails
often but I have to be honestly never been to a local meeting.. I was at a
state meeting in LA, again have to be honest too much sitting for me and i
am A little more adventurous than most, I would like to say it would be
nice if The NFB would incorporate periodic breaks throughout those big
conventions for a little stretching yoga or some kind of exercise, social
outing, just my opinion. I volunteer for environmental traveling companions
as a sea kayak guide and a assistant white water rafting guide. as a cane
user my concern is for the blind community as well as those in wheelchairs.
Or those using walkers. I am concerned about the lack of understanding and
concern San Jose city Council has for people with disabilities, for those
of us who walk the sidewalks when it comes to these new scooters and now
left bikes being littered A crossed our city anywhere on a sidewalk
impeding the safety of our community. a couple Decembers ago I was walking
home and tripped over one causing me to call 911 because I thought I had
broken my ankle luckily it wasn’t broken and now just recently walking out
my apartment complex I ran right into the handle of a scooter hitting me in
the chest and then a bike. My concern is that our city Council is not
taking my concerns seriously enough. I did Address them at a council
meeting and spoke in front of them the injury was so recent I could still
show them the cuts and bruises on my ankle, I left that meeting very upset
because they dismissed my concerns for the safety of the disabled community
completely said they never got one bad complaint and I was one of the first
10 that complained about the way they’re allowing the scooter companies to
litter our city sidewalks and causing injuries to our disabled/ blind
community not to mention no safety helmets are put on these and the riders
can be seriously injured as well! there are lots of injuries out there they
were very dismissive considering people with disabilities! A person in a
wheelchair can’t move a scooter out of the way when it’s on the sidewalk,
not even the best cane user can avoid these death traps. I would like to
start a petition and start getting signatures so that they can placed
scooters and bikes in a proper place like some kind of corral, if we’re
going to utilize them or banned them completely from our city. what kind
of advice would you advise me to do and how can I/we get some things
started?
thank you Candy
