It is a good idea. Perhaps you would do well to make it an add-on to NVDA. Building a new screen reader from scratch seems unwise at the current time. You should also connect with Erin to get some feedback from the local blind tech community.

Subject: [Nfbc-sj] User Testing for Musical Screen Reader

Hi everyone,

I’m Adrian, a new member of NFB San Jose and former NFB Illinois Scholar.

We’re a team of graduates from Stanford's Computer Science department, Human-Computer Interaction department, and Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics. We’ve been working on a musical screen reader that uses melody, for example, to relate the number of items in a menu. Our goal is to create an audio interface that’s as beautiful as modern graphical interfaces.

We need your feedback!

If anyone has a spare 15 - 30 minutes, we would really appreciate your input on what we have so far.

Best,

Adrian
