[Nfbc-sj] February Minutes

hello Kevin. Glad to do it.

Regarding the Waymo discussion, did you guys discuss the blind
pedestrian's perspective at all? This seems like an area of research
that's getting short shrift, especially since all tests are currently
conducted with a backup driver in the car. In the rare event the
car encounters a blind or otherwise disabled pedestrian, I'm pretty sure
the backup driver will roll down the window and talk to the pedestrian and
communicate their position, at the very least, or otherwise affect a
disengagement and take manual control until the pedestrian has passed. For
traffic signals, I'm not so concerned. The signal tells when the car
should go and, assuming the autonomous vehicle follows the rules, the
pedestrian will know what the car is doing and when. What concerns me is
something like the following:

Pedestrian comes up on a cross street with a stop sign. The pedestrian
notices a car waiting at the stop sign to make a turn onto the street
parallel with the pedestrian. The pedestrian waves the car on. It doesn't
move. ( It flashes a sign on its window saying it's waiting for the
pedestrian -- pedestrian doesn't know this.) The pedestrian waves, waits,
waves, waits and waves again but nothing happens. Finally, the pedestrian
times out and begins crossing in front of the vehicle. Questions:

1. Will the vehicle wait forever for the pedestrian to cross?

2. If not, how long will it wait?

3. If both pedestrian and automobile time out simultaneously, will the
vehicle notice and stop for the pedestrian again?

In arizona, the pedestrian who was killed was walking a bicycle. The
car didn't recognize the object as a pedestrian. Will these cars recognize
pedestrians with guide dogs as pedestrians? What about people pulling
suitcases or carts/baskets? I'm assuming they've tested pedestrians
pushing strollers or carts/baskets, but blind people using canes will be
pushing their canes while pulling other things.

	Thanks for the update.
