Subject: [Nfbc-sj] REMINDER: CHAPTER MEETING THIS SATURDAY, 10/17/2020 AT 3:00PM VIA ZOOM
hello fellow chapter members. This is a reminder that we'll be holding our October chapter meeting on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 3:00PM, via Zoom. Jamie has once again agreed to host this meeting and we look forward to seeing all of you via Zoom, see the link below.
Because I failed to provide minutes for the last meeting, and we covered a number of important items, I'm going to quote the agenda I sent out for the september meeting and note the results of those discussions below, hoping they willserve as a passable version of meeting minutes.
Below that, I'll list the topics for this week's agenda. Consequently, this e-mail will be rather long, but I hope it will be informative and will inspire you to attend the meeting this coming saturday.
We have a number of items for this month's agenda, some of which are hold overs from last month. Here are the items I'm aware of at the moment.
If there are additional items folks have for this meeting, please let me know and I'll add them.
1. Voter registration and voter accessibility. We're not here to discuss how you vote or how you should vote, but we want to make sure that everyone in our chapter who is elligible to vote is registered to vote and that they know how to vote in this election. Santa Clara county has adopted a system to allow nonvisual marking of remote ballots. There are some things we need to do as a chapter in order to help assure everyone who wants to vote and is elligible, can vote. Let's discuss.
This item was very lively. We had representatives from Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties. Jamie looke into the procedure for accessible voting for Santa Clara County. The procedure is that if you want to vote at home and you want to do it accessibly, you can visit the Santa Clara County's voting web site and fillout your ballot on-line. When you've completed the ballot, you must then print it and put it in the envelope that came with the ballot that was mailed to you. You need to make sure you sign your name on the strip that shows through the envelope flap once it's sealed, otherwise your vote will not be counted. You will probably need sighted assistance to do this. Using AIRA for this task may be sufficient, but I suggest using an in-person helper.
If you want to vote at a Santa Clara County voting station, you may do so. The same web site, above, will have the locations of voting locations that will have accessible voting machines available, as well as the dates and times the voting locations will be open.
Elizabeth Stewart from Capitola looked into the procedures for Santa Cruz County. If you need assistance voting at home, you can call the county registrar's office and schedule a time for someone to come out and help you complete your ballot. Their voting web site lists the times and locations polling locations will be available and which ones feature accessible voting machines if you want to vote at a polling station.
Thank you to Jamie and Elizabeth for gathering this information.
2. Door prize donations for the state convention. We have developed an on-line system for donating door prizes for the upcoming state convention; now all we need are people to decide what they would like to donate as door prizes and what we, as a chapter, would like to donate as a door prize.
The door prize donation site can be accessed from the NFB of California state convention web page: http://www.nfbcal.org/convention/ Typically, I throw in a few Starbucks gift cards each year on the chapter's behalf for the door prize donations. tiffany Manosh, who is the door prize coordinator, tells me she's short on door prizes this year, so if you wish to donate a door prize, either as an individual or on the chapter's behalf, feel free to do so. I will donate 2 $25 Starbucks gift cards on the chapter's behalf this year.
3. Auction baskets
It has become a tradition for the chapters to donate baskets of goodies to be auctioned off during the convention. The funds go to the state affiliate and the chapters get recognized for their donations. This year, we'll be running an on-line auction during the convention. What should we as a chapter donate?
The discussion around this item was lively and enthusiastic. For the theme, I believe we decided to call our basket the Pandemic pampering Package. Actually, I don't think that's quite the right name, but it's what I remember. Brian Q came up with the name, perhaps he can refresh my memory.
In any case, Elizabeth Stewart came up with a number of items for the basket which I'll be picking up from her after this Saturday's meeting.
I'm still looking to see if we can get Humanware to donate a Victor Stream as part of the basket. Thank you Elizabeth for coming through with our basket items.
4. Elections.
It is that time again when we need to elect our board. Normally, we
would hold our elections in August, but that didn't happen. If possible,
I'd like to hold elections at our September meeting, but if that's not possible, then perhaps we can hold them at our October meeting, which falls the Saturday before the state convention. I believe our entire board is up for re-election. Terms are two year terms.
We wer able to hold elections. Results are as follows:
President: Brian Buhrow
Vice president: Brian Quintana
Treasurer: Kyle Garcia
Secretary: Jamie Principado
thank you to our new board for their service.
5. Membership.
It's also time to re-up for another year of membership. Kyle, will you be able to give us a Treasureer's report this Saturday?
Kyle is able to take our membership dues on-line, either via Paypal or Venmo. He sent an e-mail to this list detailing the ways he can take our dues. Our current treasury balance is $75.
For this coming meeting, Saturday, October 17, 2020, I have the following items for our agenda:
1. Our state convention begins a week from today, thursday October 22, 2020. The convention will take place via Zoom. Details will be available on our state convention web site: http://www.nfbcal.org/convention/ I am interested in hearing from folks who have questions about this year's convention or who may need help getting hooked up with the meetings.
Also, we will discuss how voting for resolutions and stateboard members will work this year.
2. Our November meeting is scheduled to fall on Saturday November 21, 2020. this is, I believe, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Do we want to meet on this date or reschedule?
If there are any additional agenda items, please send them along and we'll put them in.
-thanks
-Brian
