CONROY<BR><BR>10:30 - 11 December 2007<BR><BR>A guide dog needed an emergency
operation to treat "horrific" <BR>injuries suffered when he sat on a broken
bottle.<BR><BR>The trained golden retriever, called Keats, was badly injured
<BR>during a walk with his visually-impaired owner, Eric Day, on
<BR>Sunday.<BR><BR>It happened when the dog sat on the edge of a kerb - just as
<BR>Keats is trained to do - near their home in Beatrice Road, in
<BR>Newfoundpool, Leicester.<BR><BR>Today the animal's owner said he could not
understand how people <BR>could litter the streets with dangerous
glass.<BR><BR>Mr Day, who has had Keats for more than six years, said a woman
<BR>passing by noticed the injury but the golden retriever still <BR>managed to
guide his owner home.<BR><BR>He said: "Being a guide dog he sits at every curb.
When I felt <BR>it, there was blood pouring out.<BR><BR>"It was quite a deep and
nasty gash, but he got me home - he did <BR>his job."<BR><BR>He said an
emergency vet had to be called out, who decided the <BR>eight-year-old dog
needed an operation straight away.<BR><BR>He was given a general anaesthetic
before the vet could stitch <BR>the wound.<BR><BR>Keats is out of action for a
few days while he recovers from his <BR>ordeal, but Mr Day is confident the
golden retriever will make a <BR>full recovery.<BR><BR>Mr Day said: "He had to
be knocked out and stitched. He's all <BR>right. He can't work for a couple of
days."<BR><BR>The 55-year-old said Keats was absolutely vital to him living
<BR>independently.<BR><BR>He said: "It's the difference between getting out and
staying in. <BR>I'm not so keen on the cane. He makes a big
difference."<BR><BR>However, he revealed that this was not the first time Keats
had <BR>suffered a injury from people smashing glass in the street.<BR><BR>The
guide dog needed shards of glass removing from his paw a few <BR>months
ago.<BR><BR>Mr Day said: "I can't see why people need to smash bottles in the
<BR>street. I can't understand it."<BR><BR>Keats was provided by the Guide Dogs
charity which condemned the <BR>thoughtless behaviour that led to the
injury.<BR><BR>Charity spokesman Graham Kensett said: "What has happened to
<BR>Keats is horrific. Because a glass bottle was casually left on <BR>the
pavement, a guide dog has had to undergo a stressful <BR>operation and his owner
has to rely on other people to get <BR>around."<BR><BR>Mr Kensett said the
charity campaigned to reduce obstacles in the <BR>street, such as shop signs,
overhanging trees and bins.<BR><BR>He said: "Many people do not realise that
discarded rubbish, <BR>chewing gum and glass bottles can cause serious injuries,
