been attacked by pit bulls and Leo has<BR>also been shot in the leg by someone
with an air<BR>rifle.<BR><BR>Leo is one tough and loyal old companion. Three
times<BR>in the past 18 months, the West Auckland guide dog has<BR>been savaged
by pit bull terriers.<BR><BR>Another time, while guiding handler Petrus
Tuerlings<BR>along the street, Leo was shot in the leg by somebody<BR>with an
air rifle.<BR><BR>The 11-year-old great dane-pointer cross is a symbol<BR>of the
increasingly violent climate in which Royal New<BR>Zealand Foundation of the
Blind dogs have to<BR>work.<BR><BR>It's an expensive battle. Dogs cost the
foundation<BR>$22,500 each to breed and train and, after an attack,<BR>many have
to be retrained or withdrawn. For their<BR>handlers, that can be a catastrophe.
There is a long<BR>waiting list for trained guide dogs and an injured
dog<BR>cannot quickly be put back into action.<BR><BR>Foundation dog instructor
Angie Coupar said that, in<BR>the past year, 15 dogs - worth about $330,000 -
had<BR>required significant veterinary treatment after<BR>dog attacks. "Menacing
behaviour toward guide dogs<BR>happens on a daily basis somewhere in New
Zealand."<BR><BR>The foundation says both dog and handler suffer crises<BR>of
confidence after attacks. Mr Tuerlings now gets<BR>nervous when he hears dogs
barking ahead.<BR><BR>He was with Leo when the dog was shot and managed
to<BR>get him to a vet quickly. The pit bull attacks, on<BR>both Leo and Mr
Tuerlings, have been more frightening.<BR>"I am more frightened for him than for
me."<BR><BR>In the last attack, in December, a pit bull charged at<BR>Leo,
tearing his stomach. "There was no warning, he<BR>just came running
out."<BR><BR>Though a big dog, Leo did not fight. "He was giving<BR>little
whimpers and little nips at the dog, because he<BR>was latched on to the
stomach, but he wasn't<BR>really fighting at all."<BR><BR>The foundation breeds
and trains its dogs not to be<BR>aggressive. "If one of our dogs shows
aggression, they<BR>cannot be used," Ms Coupar says. "It makes it<BR>more
difficult for one to defend itself.<BR><BR>"It's not used to that kind of
behaviour. They have<BR>been socialised all their lives with other
friendly<BR>dogs. They are restricted in a harness; they cannot<BR>jump or leap
out of the way."<BR><BR>Leo is now facing retirement. Mr Tuerlings is
keeping<BR>him, though; he found him as a youngster at a dog<BR>pound and the
foundation's Guide Dog Services later<BR>recognised his guiding
talents.<BR><BR>Age has barely wearied him, though his handler says he<BR>no
longer goes to restaurants because Leo is not keen<BR>on lying under a table for
an hour or so. "He's<BR>lost his patience for all that."<BR><BR><A
