<P><BR><BR>The Journal News, NY, USA<BR>Thursday, March 22, 2007<BR><BR>9 11
widow promotes service dog program<BR><BR>By BARBARA LIVINGSTON
NACKMAN<BR><BR>VALHALLA - There is no doubt that a dog can brighten someone's
day and be trained to help those with extra needs.<BR><BR>Cathy Carilli, whose
husband, Tom Sinton III of Croton-on-Hudson, died in the 9/11 attacks, knows the
solace that animals can bring all too well and wants to share that - along with
their practical assistance -with wounded veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq
wars.<BR><BR>Carilli has created The Tower of Hope Foundation and planned
tonight's fundraiser, "Lighting the Path," in lower Manhattan to help train dogs
to <BR>assist veterans who have lost limbs in combat.<BR><BR>"During my darkest
moments after losing (my husband), it was our pets that gave me comfort when I
was alone," said Carilli, who explained that her tiger-like savannah cats
cuddled with her in the kitchen and reminded her that she wasn't alone, even
though her heart was breaking.<BR><BR>Sinton was at the trading desk at Cantor
Fitzgerald on the 105th floor of the north tower of the World Trade Center when
the plane hit. He is one of the 109 Westchester residents remembered at "The
Rising," the county's memorial at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla to those killed
in the terror <BR>attacks.<BR><BR>Carilli, 46, a portfolio manager at U.S. Trust
in New York City, remarried in 2004 and last month moved to Sleepy Hollow. She
sought to turn the <BR>tragedy and sadness of the attacks into something
positive and in the proper image of her late husband, whom she described as
exuberant, smart and full of life.<BR><BR>"Afghanistan and Iraq are a direct
result of 9/11, and these (soldiers) are our heroes - and so many are coming
back with terrible disabilities,<WBR>" she <BR>said. "Irrespective of what our
politicians are fighting over, these people have volunteered and deserve our
help and our respect."<BR><BR>The foundation directors have set a goal of
raising at least a half- million dollars for animal training centers that spend
roughly $25,000 a year per <BR>dog.<BR><BR>"I know I can't stop terrorists, but
at least I can improve the quality of life for some people," Carilli
said.<BR><BR>Veteran Luke Murphy is hoping for his own assistance
dog.<BR><BR>Murphy, a staff sergeant in the Army's 101st Airborne Division, was
injured by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad on April 25. He lost his
right leg from above his knee and his left leg is badly banged up, he said last
month while undergoing occupational therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center
in Washington, D.C.<BR><BR>"I haven't worked with a dog yet, but I think one
could really be effective. I don't really want a cane," said Palm City, Fla.,
man said. "I could be the only guy who can bring an animal into public places. I
think an animal will give some physical and moral support, and a dog, when
trained, can be very responsive to commands."<BR><BR>Murphy said he hopes to
take college classes and is counting on an assistance dog to help carry his
books, open doors, reach things he can't get to and even guide him in
walking.<BR><BR>The 25-year-old is working with NEADS/Dogs for Deaf and Disabled
Veterans, which last year was the first service dog program to be invited to
Walter Reed to meet with returning soldiers.<BR><BR>Sheila O'Brien, executive
director of NEADS, said the dogs can "bring smiles to the veterans' faces and
can offer assistance to them."<BR><BR>"We are making the world better one dog at
a time," she said.<BR><BR>The concept is to train dogs to help injured veterans
gain better mobility and to give them more confidence in public
situations.<BR><BR>"Veterans have given everything, and it is time for us to
give back to them," she said.<BR><BR>There are large numbers of disabled men and
women coming back from overseas, many of them young and eager to re-enter the
larger world, she added.<BR><BR>Barbara Jenkel of Chappaqua, who volunteers with
East Coast Assistance Dogs, is interested in the veterans program and has
trained dogs for a variety of assistance tasks.<BR><BR>"People living with a
disability want to get back into society," she said, holding the leash of a
friendly golden retriever, Bip, at the Valhalla memorial. "A Seeing Eye dog is a
'tell me' dog, but a service dog is an 'ask me' dog."<BR><BR>Dogs have long been
used in the military and can be trained to help former soldiers in other ways,
she added.<BR><BR>The Tower of Hope Foundation has rallied support from a Sleepy
Hollow-based veterinarian, Dr. Brian Green of Carmel. Green and his wife, Dr.
Kathy Noone, also a veterinarian, are longtime friends of Carilli's. Green will
be honored at the foundation's gala with a Beacon of Light Award.<BR><BR>"It is
a real honor to be one of the first recognized by the foundation and to help
Cathy with this wonderful project," Green said. "There is no doubt that animals
make a difference in people's lives, and I'm glad to be a part of
this."<BR><BR>Reach Barbara Livingston Nackman at <BR><A
