The seminar typically takes place on the third Sunday of every month unless otherwise noted. For those who are not able to attend, the presentation will be recorded and shared on the list as well as the NAGDU Facebook page. This month's topic is, "Reading NAGDU's proposed resolutions for this year's national convention." NAGDU would like to take this time to read the draft of the proposed resolutions that have been submitted to the NFB's resolutions committee. This will be the opportunity for people to find out the nature of the resolutions and ask questions about them. Please keep in mind that the final wording of the resolutions will most likely change based on what the resolutions committee says. Also, this is no guarantee that the committee will adopt the resolutions, nor that the convention will vote to approve them. It is our hope that members, guide dog users and non-guide dog users, will ask questions about these resolutions so they can make the best choice when it comes time to voting for them during convention this year. NAGDU is planning on having a town hall meeting about these resolutions in June and in July before the general sessions where people can ask further questions about them. Resolution concerning due process involving repossession and removing guide dogs from handler's possession. 3. The two best Guide Dog training programs in the country collaborating to educate airline personnel. Tina Subject: The Seeing Eye and Guide Dogs for the Blind collaborate on a training video for airport and airline personnel Dear Seeing Eye graduate, We hope you are doing well and enjoying some warmer weather as the pandemic begins to recede and reopening accelerates. We are writing to announce a very exciting collaboration between The Seeing Eye and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Our schools have partnered with United Airlines and Alaska Airlines on the production of a training video for airport and airline employees around the country. The purpose of the video is to demonstrate best practices for assisting blind and visually impaired people, in particular guide dog handlers, as they navigate each step of the air travel process. The video places particular emphasis on how to maintain social distancing protocols while assisting travelers who are blind or visually impaired. Our goal is to educate personnel in the travel industry, but the video also may prove useful for travelers who are blind or visually impaired who want to help spread the message or review the tips in the video for their own travel purposes. You can view an audio described version of the video here: https://vimeo.com/547734281 The full text of the press release is below and at https://www.seeingeye.org/press/press-releases/guide-dogs-for-the-blind-and.html Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions. Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) and The Seeing Eye (TSE) of Morristown, N.J., two of North America?s leading guide dog schools, have joined forces to create a training video to help airline and airport employees better assist travelers who are visually impaired, with a special focus on how to address the social distancing guidelines during the pandemic. COVID-19 has been especially isolating for people who are blind or visually impaired, largely because the rules and aids for socially distancing have been communicated through directional arrows, signage, or taped-off measurements that guide dogs don?t understand or white canes can?t feel. This has made air travel exponentially harder for those who are blind or visually impaired, so GDB and TSE stepped in to help improve the travel experience for travelers who are blind by creating an instructional video for airlines and airports to train their employees. The video includes best practices and tips for helping travelers who are blind or visually impaired, including: * How to provide superior service while interacting with them and their guide dogs * How to assist them in navigating the airport, while social distancing * How to help guide dog teams navigate TSA screening * How to provide guidance for boarding and exiting a plane * How to provide physical assistance that doesn?t violate social distancing guidelines ?Since the air travel industry already had so much to contend with during the pandemic, we wanted to share our expertise in a way that would help provide a safe and positive travel experience during and after the pandemic -- not only for travelers who are blind but also for the airline and airport employees who serve them,? said Christine Benninger, president and CEO for Guide Dogs for the Blind. ?This video is another example of how we have pivoted as an organization during the pandemic to better serve the blindness community.? ?This collaboration across industries is an important step in ensuring continued accessibility for travelers who are blind and visually impaired,? said Glenn Hoagland, president and CEO of The Seeing Eye. ?As the response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, we expect this educational video will be a lasting way to help facilitate the comfort and safety of both travelers and the professionals who work with them.? In creating the video, GDB and TSE enlisted input and participation from guide dog users, as well as from employees at Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, the Port of Oakland, the Port of Newark, and the TSA teams at Oakland International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport. Alaska and United plan to begin sharing the video with their employees this summer. ?We are committed to providing the best service to our guests and appreciate the opportunity to work with Guide Dogs for the Blind and The Seeing Eye on this important video,? said Wayne Newton, vice president of airport operations and customer service, Alaska Airlines. ?This video will be used to train our employees and ensure we are continuing the support of our guests who are blind and visually impaired in the best ways possible.? ?United strives to create an inclusive and accessible environment for our customers, employees and all those we proudly serve,? said Jessica Kimbrough, the airline?s chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer. ?The pandemic has reshaped travel in many ways and working alongside organizations like Guide Dogs for the Blind and The Seeing Eye helps ensure our customers will continue to have a safe and enjoyable experience.? About Guide Dogs for the Blind Headquartered in San Rafael, Calif., Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) is the largest guide dog school in North America. It is a passionate community that prepares highly qualified guide dogs to empower individuals who are blind or visually impaired to move through the world more safely and confidently. More than 15,000 guide teams have graduated from GDB since it was founded in 1942. Gallegos - NAGDU via NFB-NAGDU Sent: Monday, May 17, 2021 12:50 PM To: NAGDU Master List > Subject: [NFB-NAGDU] Important updates about NAGDU regarding convention and other events Hello everyone, while I try to not speak for the NAGDU board members, I think I can say with confidence that everyone is excited for convention this year. I for one wish it was taking place in person, but hopefully, that will be a reality next year. For those of you know know that I reside in Houston Texas, I'm sure you can understand when I say that I personally can't wait for convention in 2023 even more than next year. Of course, everything is subject to change. Meanwhile, I have information to share with you about this year. As the NFB's second virtual convention this year gets close, NAGDU is doing a few things to get ready. This email contains a few updates, and a few requests. Therefore, I ask that you read it in its entirety so that you can be as informed as possible. 1. Elections. Just like every year at convention, NAGDU will hold elections for a few of its board positions. NAGDU staggers the elections so that there is not an entire new board elected every two years. Instead, the positions of President, Secretary, and two board positions are elected on even years while the positions of Vice President, Treasurer, and one board position are elected on odd years. Since voting can only be done by NAGDU members, it is important that your dues are current. Becoming a NAGDU member and paying dues can be done in two ways. First, you can become a member of NAGDU directly. Second, you can become a member of your state affiliate's guide dog user division. NAGDU will honor both types of memberships. For example, states like Colorado, California, and Texas have an affiliate guide dog user division. Therefore, if you are a member of that division, you are recognized as a member of NAGDU. 2. Paying dues. NAGDU accepts dues through PayPal, the Cash app, and Venmo. If you want to write a check, you can also pay that way. Please refer to the membership page on www.nagdu.org for details. If you will pay your dues to your local state guide dog user division, please talk to one of its board members for details on how you can pay your dues. 3. Deadlines. In order to have accurate information about the members, NAGDU is requesting that if you are a board member of a guide dog user affiliate, please submit your membership roster to NAGDU no later than June 1, 2021 this year. The roster should contain the name of the person and some form of contact information such as the phone number and/or email address and the state the member is registered with. Rosters can be submitted to the NAGDU board of directors at board at nagdu.org or to the treasurer at treasurer at nagdu.org . Now, if you want to pay your dues directly to NAGDU and you wish to be eligible for voting this year, we ask that your dues be paid by NAGDU's seminar day this year. 4. NAGDU Events at Convention. This year at convention, NAGDU will host at least two events. First, we will hold our annual seminar, which will be full of information as it pertains to current and prospective guide dog users. Everyone is welcome whether you are a guide dog user, a puppy raiser, a training program, or interested in finding out more information. Second, NAGDU will hold its annual business meeting. Just like with the seminar, we will have a lot of information to share with everyone whether you are a member or not. Elections will also be held at the business meeting. Please stay tuned for other possible events that NAGDU will be holding during convention time. 5. NAGDU Yappy Hour. As you may be aware of, NAGDU holds a social get-together called Yappy Hour every other Saturday at 3 PM Eastern. Currently, the dates planned for Yappy hour between now and convention are May 29, June 12, and June 26. After that, the next one will be after convention on July 17. 6. NAGDU Guide Dog Matters. The NAGDU Guide Dog Matters meeting, which is normally held once per month on the third Sunday, will be different for June. Because of Father's Day, Guide Dog Matters will take place on June 13 at 3 PM Eastern time. The next one after that will take place on August 15. 7. Board Meetings and other public meetings. NAGDU will still have its monthly board meetings and is also planning on holding at least one public event to discuss other topics of interest to the guide dog user community. We ask that you watch for announcements of these events for detailed information as it becomes available. 8. Contacting NAGDU. You can always contact the NAGDU board of directors by emailing board at nagdu.org . You can also give us a call or send us a text at (346) 439-7444. We highly recommend subscribing to the public events calendar from your mobile device. By doing so, you can stay up-to-date with the various events that NAGDU and that other state affiliate guide dog user divisions are doing. As always, we look forward to hearing from you. -- Respectfully, Raul A. This informal meeting takes place every two weeks unless otherwise noted. By informal, we truly mean it.
