I have permission to distribute this. Good afternoon Michael As a valued member of our client community, we've been thinking a lot about you. As we've been attending to our staff and volunteers, you have been ever present in our mind, and we hope you are healthy and navigating this situation as well as you can. I am writing to update you on GDB's continuing efforts to support clients, staff, volunteers and donors during the COVID-19 outbreak. As you are aware, several weeks ago GDB made the decision to restrict all travel in the field to that which is essential for the safety of clients and/or dogs. This response has allowed us to do our part to mitigate risks and minimize the effects of the coronavirus within our constituent community. Beginning 3/17/2020, we have extended our precautionary measure to include suspension of class training on our California and Oregon campuses; all campus tours continue to be cancelled. We are now minimizing the number of staff and volunteers on campus, while ensuring that our dogs continue to receive the best care possible and that our people remain healthy and safe. We are exploring and enacting creative ways to keep our operations and life-changing mission moving forward. Please be assured that telephonic support through our Support Center, Veterinary Financial Assistance program and your Field Service Manager remain available; our Admissions Department continues to process applications. Like you, we are closely monitoring the latest information about the virus from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), along with state and local organizations, and will continue to make any necessary adjustments to our operations. A GDB Operational Command team is meeting on a daily basis to ensure an informed and measured response to the COVID-19 situation while continuing to serve the purpose of mission. Thank you for your understanding and support during this challenging time. You are a valued member of the GDB community and we will keep you informed as things continue to unfold. Please contact the Support Center at 800-295-4050 with any questions. With Care, Lauren Kenney Director of Client Services -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We are OK, and we hope that you are, too. Our primary concern is the continued health of our staff, our students, and of course, our dogs. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our staff, and the hard work of our students, we were able to graduate our March 2nd class a little ahead of schedule so they could all return home safely. With more than 200 dogs on our campus, we can never shut down completely. But we have reduced the number of people on campus, mostly focused on those people who directly care for and work with our amazing dogs. The rest of our staff continues to work, either from home or, if still on campus, in areas where they can maintain a safe six foot distance from others. Where employees must work in closer proximity to each other, we are asking them to wear personal protective equipment. And of course, we are asking them (and you!) to frequently wash hands. Our Admissions Department continues processing applications from people who are blind seeking a place in a future class, and our Instruction & Training Department continues to provide follow-up support by phone or video conference to graduates who need it. One of our instructors even volunteered to drive to North Carolina to provide assistance to a graduate there. We want to assure you, as a member of The Seeing Eye family, that despite unprecedented challenges, we strive to maintain our reputation as the pioneer and premier guide dog school in the world. We have been here for our graduates and their dogs since 1929, and we will continue to be during, and after, this crisis. Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts, and stay safe. It is great that Dr. Bell and his staff are empowering blind people to enter this field. We should also help to advocate for guide dog schools to hire blind O&M teachers. Best Regards, Michael Hingson From: NFBNet-Members-List On Behalf Of Blake, Lou Ann via NFBNet-Members-List Sent: Friday, March 27, 2020 2:19 PM To: nfbnet-members-list at nfbnet.org Subject: [Nfbnet-members-list] Institute on Blindness gets grant extension for improved mobility and rehabilitation programs Institute on Blindness gets grant extension for improved mobility and rehabilitation programs March 20, 2020 Louisiana Tech's Institute on Blindness has received grant approval for Structured Discovery Cane Travel (SDCT) and Structured Discovery rehabilitation training, a development that brings more depth and opportunity to the Institute's education programs that are specialized for teaching individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Louisiana Tech University is the only university in Louisiana to offer graduate certifications and master programs in Teaching Blind Students (TBS), Orientation and Mobility (O&M), and Rehabilitation Teaching for the Blind Counseling and Guidance. These graduate certifications and master programs train individuals to become teachers who help give independence to the blind community. The innovative and effective SDCT and Structured Discovery rehabilitation training programs will offer more opportunities to improve mobility and daily living skills for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Dr. Edward Bell, Director of the Professional Development and Research Institute on Blindness (PDRIB), expressed that he has seen great success from previous years and through the renewed grant he anticipates exponential growth. "Over the past five years, Louisiana Tech has benefited from this grant and has trained 35 individuals who have gone on to be employed across the country in professional careers," Bell said. "With this new grant, we are excited to train as many as 40 new and eager students who are ready to change the world by bringing independence to blind kids and adults nationwide." The PDRIB, housed in Tech's College of Education, prepares highly qualified professionals to educate and rehabilitate individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The PDRIB also conducts thorough research that broadens perspectives, deepens the overall understanding of blindness, and seeks the best methods to increase independence for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. However, there is a nationwide shortage of educators for the blind and visually impaired community. With a 90% illiteracy rate and a 75% unemployment rate nationwide within the blind community, there is a dire need to increase the number of educators trained in teaching students with visual impairments. Job opportunities have grown exponentially for teaching blind or visually impaired students; currently there are four times the number of teaching jobs available than there are the number of qualified educators and instructors to fill those positions. Through their job assistance placement services and new program offerings, Bell and his team seek to do their part to fill this hiring need and empower educators to change lives within the visually impaired community. All tuition and fees are covered for the Structured Discovery Cane Travel (SDCT) and Structured Discovery rehabilitation training programs. Scholarships are available on a competitive basis for those who pursue these programs. Students who receive scholarship funding must work in the field of rehabilitation for two years for each year of their scholarship support. To become an educator for the blind and visually impaired community, contact Bell at ebell at latech.edu .
