Subject: Coronavirus COVID-19 update

Dear Seeing Eye graduate,
As always, let me begin with my best wishes that you’re all staying healthy in the midst of this unprecedented crisis. We are all OK, and I hope you are, too.
Last week, we began the process of transferring dogs from the kennels to the homes of their puppy raisers or staff members. About half the dogs have been placed in homes; the remaining dogs will be placed by the end of this week. That will not only provide a better environment for the dogs, but also for our employees, as we can dramatically reduce the number of employees we need to have at the Washington Valley campus. We still have puppies being cared for at our Breeding Station. The rest of our staff is continuing to work from home, including providing follow-up support to graduates and puppy raisers.
We still don’t know when we will be able to re-open, but we may not be adhering to the existing 2020 class schedule. Stay tuned for more updates about that.
As we are all supposed to be maintaining “social distance,” we’ve been telling the public now more than ever not to interact with Seeing Eye dogs. Remember, all evidence to date shows that dogs can’t be infected by the Coronavirus, but it does appear they can transfer the virus from one infected human to another, the same way a doorknob or a countertop can… if someone who is infected pets your dog, and then you pet your dog, you might get the virus on your hand and then transfer it to your nose, mouth, or eyes.
And just a reminder about two items we emailed you about earlier this week. First, the open comment period for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s proposed rule changes for service animals ends on Monday, April 6. Go to www.SeeingEye.org/DOT <http://support.seeingeye.org/site/R?i=uxGYvfuratVheO3tdHLxZw> for information on how and where to submit your comments, and to read the comment submitted by The Seeing Eye. If you have any questions, contact Melissa Allman, Senior Specialist, Advocacy and Government Relations, at advocacy at seeingeye.org <mailto:advocacy at seeingeye.org> or call 1-800-539-4425 ext. 1724.
Second, the annual ACVO Service Animal Eye Exam program, which is usually held in May, has been cancelled for this year. For more information, go to www.ACVOEyeExam.org <http://support.seeingeye.org/site/R?i=TdfZ7UsX7e1PfgI0mSMxkQ> . This program is not offered through The Seeing Eye, but we know many graduates use it every year.
Please stay healthy and remember, we are here for you, even if “here” isn’t on campus. If you need assistance, call us at 1-800-539-4425 or email gradservices at seeingeye.org <mailto:gradservices at seeingeye.org> .
We will be back at The Seeing Eye as soon as it’s safe to do so.
Thank you and stay healthy,
Glenn D. Hoagland
