He has not yet been found. Here's an update from Mike May that was posted on his son's memorial fund page at: https://www.gofundme.com/carsonmaymemorial UPDATE #1 Our deepest thanks to everyone who has sent cards, emailed, commented on FB and contributed to Carson?s GoFundMe campaign. It has now been 4 weeks since the massive search was launched for Carson May. The search has changed from search and rescue to search and recovery. There have been a couple leads, which have resulted in 3 more searches and digging in the deep snow but with no success. At the same time that I am researching and learning about early rescue technologies, I am also looking for ways to find a body deep under snow assuming we have a likely location. One possibility is Ground Penetrating Radar. This is typically used to locate pipes and wires under streets but there is a version that is used on the snow. This radar can scan through snow up to 10 feet or so. We are considering giving this a try. I have to believe that there are other options as Carson is not the first person to be lost under deep snow. There were 11 avalanche deaths in the US in January alone and Carson wasn?t listed as one of them. Searching in snow is obviously different than searching under rubble from earthquakes. It is a huge problem so I believe there is something out there I have not learned about yet. http://www.avalanche.org/accidents.php Our thanks to everyone who sent suggestions and links to information. It takes a village to solve problems like search and rescue and recovery if necessary. I have purchased two devices for our son Wyndham to test out of my pocket. One is a conventional avalanche beacon called the Arva Neo. After researching the Spot and Delorme InReach satellite tracking devices, I ordered the InReach Explorer. Wyndham can test these in back country snow areas as well as when he is working for the Forestry department this summer in Tahoe. I will continue to provide periodic updates as well as posting relevant links on the SAR link of http://www.CarsonMay.org Hugs and thanks to everyone! Carson?s dad and family Carson went missing while skiing at Sugarbowl on January 14th, 2016 and has not yet been found. Traditional search and rescue efforts were monumental, but not successful. Several technologies could not be deployed quickly because of privacy limitations, jurisdictional issues, and lack of prompt availability. Our goal is to ensure that future search teams are aware of, and have quick access to, state of the art SAR technology tools. Details about Carson's search and information about the resources we discover will be posted at www.carsonmay http://www.CarsonMay.org Carson would be the first to rant about how bad the tech was in this situation and how we could make it better for someone else in the future. If we save one life, we are successful and we honor Carson. -With love from Carson's dad and family -- The Seeing Eye Independence with Dignity since 1929 If you need to contact one of the list owners for > questions or assistance, please use the following email address: seeing-eye+owner at googlegroups.com . --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Seeing Eye Discussions" group. They have asked GDB to assist in gathering information from our graduates regarding this issue, so we have assisted them in creating a survey. Although this is California specific legislation GDB is also interested in gathering more information about this subject which is why we are asking all of our grads across the US and Canada to complete the survey referenced below. Here is the note and link to the survey from the California Council of the Blind. Under California service dog protection laws, criminal penalties and payment of restitution for specified expenses can be imposed against a dog owner whose dog attacks a service animal, including a guide dog. However, these provisions do not protect guide dogs when they are not in discharge of their duties. For example, if you are relieving your dog, and it is out of harness, an attack by another dog would not be covered under these laws. The California Counsel of the Blind is submitting legislation to enhance the protection of service animals regardless of whether they are working or not. It is our belief that a service animal is very valuable and should be protected at all times. We would very much appreciate it if you would take a moment to take this very short survey. But did you know some people try to fake the fact that they have a trained service dog? It's something that's caught the attention of state lawmakers. For Rene Latorre, man's best friend is much more than a dog. He's her guiding eyes. "Bear is my guide dog who's three years old," said Latorre. "He's gone through extensive training. So he's very helpful in getting places, finding doors in and out, getting me around obstacles." To Latorre, and others with visual impairment, the job of a service dog is pretty important, and one that only a specially trained dog can do. "Misrepresentation of service animals has always been illegal. You shouldn't be doing that. You can't be doing that," said Latorre. Latorre works for the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, an agency which receives a fair share of calls regarding people who try to pass off untrained pets as guide dogs. "I get calls a lot from business owners who either have experienced people coming in with a dog who's very poorly behaved and they're wondering if a dog is really a service dog, or what they can do about it," said Latorre. There's enough concern about fake guide dogs that New York lawmakers have proposed legislation to combat the fraud. "This is really about the pets and animals used to help these people," said Senator Joe Robach. Robach is a co-sponsor of legislation, which, if approved, would result in fines for those who violate it. The bill hasn't passed yet. Robach calls it a work in progress. "You know this is sort of like someone parking in a handicapped spot who's not handicapped. This is sort of the same thing. We're trying to discourage it, bring awareness to it," said Robach. "People are very attached to their animals. I don't think they realize the effect it's going to have on those of us who do have service animals," said Latorre. Those issues are reason enough, for Latorre and others with visual impairment, and their companions, who act as another set of eyes. "More needs to be in place to prevent that from happening," said Latorre. -------------- next part -------------- An embedded and charset-unspecified text was scrubbed... (Posted by kjurgens01, Community Contributor) February 23, 2016 Hartford Courant I write to ask the public's help in defeating a new state Senate Bill that would medicalize the way blind people acquire our guide dogs. As it is currently written, the bill in question, SB 35, will see medical service providers making decisions about what types of rehabilitation services we need, something they are absolutely not trained to do. Health insurance and medical personnel need to leave it to experienced rehabilitation professionals. SB 35 will take us away from the philanthropic funding model, which is already working quite well, and stack yet another cost onto health insurance. The current guide dog system isn't broken and I don't want the General Assembly to try to fix it. While the National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut appreciates well-meaning people have authored SB 35 to help us, it poses serious potential to do a lot more harm than good. Right now, guide dogs are funded through charitable donations. No doctor is required to say I need one, and no unit of government says where I must go to get a dog. Please do not let SB 35 change that. Legislators should reject this bill until the language about guide dogs has been removed.
