Evidently many people don't but the veterinarians who spoke to Alterationet tell us they're seeing more animals coming in with hypoglycemia after eating as little as a stick. And even if the animal's blood sugar returns to normal, there's quite a bit of concern that liver damage, and possibly death, may follow. "It's not just dogs, it's cats as well," says Maureen Saunders, owner/director of the Spring Valley Animal Hospital and Cat Care Clinic of the Nyacks. "And it's important to get the word out there, so people know to watch for this." Many of us tend to think that dogs and cats can eat what humans eat. We often don't think twice about giving them a bite of our cookie or worry too much when they scavenge for food. But dogs and cats don't metabolize foods the same way we do, and many of the foods we eat without problems can hurt, and even kill them. Here are eight of the most harmful foods to keep away from your pets. *1. Xylitol.* One of the more ubiquitous sweeteners in sugar-free products, xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol found in the fibers of many fruits, vegetables and mushrooms. It's typically extracted from hardwoods and corn cobs for commercial use and found in sugarless gum, toothpaste and many low-calorie baked goods. While xylitol has no known toxicity in humans, just a few sticks of sugar-free gum scavenged by a 20-pound dog can cause its insulin levels to spike and send it into hypoglycemia. Ingesting higher amounts of xylitol can create serious liver problems including acute hepatic necrosis, leading to death. Cats are also susceptible to xylitol poisoning. Sometimes vomiting occurs soon after ingestion, followed by hypoglycemia within the next hour. At this point, the animal may act lethargic and lose coordination as a result of lowered sugar levels. Elevated liver enzymes and liver failure can be seen within a few short days. If caught within the first few hours and taken to a veterinary clinic, many pets can be nursed back to health by inducing vomiting and perhaps the administration of dextrose. 2. Chocolatedd* Cocoa, the main ingredient in chocolate, is said to have many health benefits for humans, from lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease to reversing age-related memory loss. However, one chocolate bar can be deadly to a dog or a cat. Chocolate, along with coffee and some soda drinks, contains compounds known as methylxanthines . When pets ingest foods with these compounds, they may display signs of hyperactivity, discomfort or excessive thirst. Often, these symptoms give way to abnormal heart rhythms, seizures and even death. Baking chocolate and dark chocolates, which contain more of these compounds, are far more dangerous than milk chocolate or white chocolate. *3. Avocados.* Guacamole is a staple dip in many households, and we might think it's harmless to let our pet lick the bowl when we're done. But the avocado fruit contains persin, a fungicidal toxin. While it is harmless to humans (with the exception of those with avocado allergies), when consumed by dogs and cats it can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Birds, and rodents such as hamsters and guinea pigs are especially sensitive to avocado poisoning and can develop congestion, difficulty breathing, and fluid accumulation around the heart. Larger amounts of ingested avocado can create similar symptoms in cats and dogs and even cause death. *4. Macadamia nuts.* Dog owners should be especially mindful not to feed cookies, especially store-bought ones you might not know the ingredients of, to their pets. Beyond typical macadamia nut cookies, other flavors of commercial cookies and even some brownies and cakes contain macadamia powder as an ingredient. Veterinarians are still not quite sure why, but macadamia nuts are known to cause vomiting, ataxia, tremors and hypothermia in dogs, though they don't seem to have the same effect on cats and other domestic animals. Dr. Saunders says the results can be life-threatenin g and that elderly dogs may be more at risk. Dogs typically develop these signs between 12 and 48 hours after ingestion. Vets recommend that asymptomatic dogs should be treated with activated charcoal, while those who become ill should immediately be taken to a vet clinic where treatment may include fluids, analgesics and antipyretics. *5. Grapes and raisins.* The veterinary community has recently put out the word that grapes are highly toxic to dogs and cats. "We didn't know about this until a few years ago, but eating grapes and raisins can lead to acute kidney failure in pets," says Dr. Saunders. "Unfortunately, we're still not sure why some animals can tolerate them and others cannot." The ASPCA believes that pets who already have the one of a variety of health conditions may have more dramatic reactions to grape ingestion. *6. Yeast dough.* The yeast in uncooked bread dough can rise in a pet's digestive system and cause high amounts of gas to accumulate. This can cause an animal's stomach or intestines to rupture, possibly leading to a painful death. While the ASCPA says that the risk is much lower for pets when the dough has been cooked and fully risen, it can also cause problems. The organization recommends that bread-based treats should be no more than 10% of a pet's caloric intake. *7. Onions and garlic.* "For cats, this is a major issue," says Dr. Saunders, who says she's seen several serious cases of onion poisoning. "People might think it's okay if they're cooking stew to give some to their pets, but that's actually a real problem for them." It's not just cats-a dog's health can also be put at risk by onion ingestion. In both animals, the compunds thiosulfate and allyl propyl disulfide found in onions work to oxidize an oxygen-transpor ting protein called hemoglobin in the blood, making it less capable of carrying oxygen throughout the body. All members of the allium family, which includes garlic, shallots and scallions, contain these compounds, which can wreak havoc on a pet's red blood cells, if eaten in large enough amounts. Garlic tends to be much more toxic than the common onion. Also, garlic and onion powders, typical ingredients in many soups, baby food and meat sauces, can be quiet killers. The veterinarians we spoke to say that symptoms typically don't show up immediately, but eventually the animal becomes lethargic and there can be some physical changes, such as pale gums and dark-colored urine. In the most severe cases of onion poisoning, a blood transfusion might be needed to save the animal's life. *8. Marijuana edibles.* Legal for either recreational or medical use in several states, marijuana is often sold in more potent forms, including edibles that taste much like some foods we would typically eat. Tina Wismer, of the Animal Poison Control Center told NBC News that animals don't react to the tetrahydrocanna binol in cannabis the same way humans do. "Without treatment, they can go into comas and die," she says, noting that edibles may be even more lethal if they also contain chocolate or raisins. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care found that marijuana ingestion of baked goods that contain medical-grade THC butter can kill a dog. The researchers looked into 125 cases of dogs ingesting marijuana between 2005 and 2010 and found that it resulted in two deaths. Both dogs asphyxiated on their own vomit. Since marijuana was legalized in Colorado, veterinarians in the state say they've seen some dogs die from ingestion. Ashley Harmon, a veterinarian at Fort Collins Veterinary Emergency and Rehabilitation, told a local newspaper that one dog died after eating a pound of pot brownies while another ate a pound of pot butter. Pet owners who use marijuana edibles in their homes must exercise caution and keep these items securely packaged and out of reach of dogs and cats. ininOther Home Toxins* Dr. Saunders says that while pet poisoning from foods is a serious problem, there are many other common home items our pets shouldn't come in contact with. "One of the biggest problems I see is people trying to help their pet with medicines to treat them. They often do that by giving them Tylenol, but they end up giving them inappropriate doses," says Saunders. "This is especially a problem I see with older dogs. Pepto Bismol is given to dogs, but the aspirin in it is a major issue with cats." Dr. Saunders says that people should pay particular attention to where they store antifreeze, which contains ethylene glycol. Its sweet smell and taste are attractive to pets as well as wildlife. Antifreeze is deadly when consumed. Even certain flowers can cause a problem in the home. "Some types of lilies are a real issue with cats," she says. If your pet suddenly becomes ill and you know or suspect it has eaten any foods in this article, Dr. Saunders suggests you immediately contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435. Also, find out where the emergency veterinary clinic is in your area and keep its address and phone number clearly posted on your fridge in case of emergencies. __._,_.___ _____ Posted by: "Becky Frankeberger" _____ Reply via web post . Shepard | dshepard at repub.com November 28, 2014 Source: http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2014/11/passenger_with_pig_boards_fli g.html You've heard the expression, "when pigs fly" haven't you? It's is an adynaton, or, a figure of speech, if you will, so hyperbolic that it describes an impossibility. It's used for humorously, when someone wants to make fun of over-ambition. But a passenger at Bradley International Airport, in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, wasn't kidding when she boarded a US Airways flight with a pig in tow. Jonathan Skolnik, a professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst told ABC News he thought the woman with the pig was carrying a duffel bag when she got on the plane. Skolnick, a passenger on the plane, became quite concerned when the woman, and her pig, headed straight for the empty seat next to him. "But it turns out it wasn't a duffel bag. We could smell it and it was a pig on a leash," he told ABC. "She tethered it to the arm rest next to me and started to deal with her stuff, but the pig was walking back and forth." "I was terrified, because I was thinking I'm gonna be on the plane with the pig," Snolnik added, saying he guesses the pig weighed between 50 and 70 pounds. Another passenger on the flight commented on ABC's website, "This was the most surreal flying experience of my life. How are animals of this size allowed in a passenger compartment of an airplane? This should not be permitted." According to Britain's Daily Mail newspaper, the woman had the pig as an emotional support animal, but was asked to leave the plane after it became disruptive. The Department of Transportation has certain guidelines concerning animals, including pigs, monkeys and miniature horses, that can be taken on flights if they are determined to be needed as emotional support for a person. TSA officials are supposed to determine whether the animal is permitted on the plane by running through a list of guidelines, the newsaper reported. "Pigs are favored service animals for people allergic to dogs," the Daily Mail wrote. "Guidelines suggest they are intelligent companions and attuned to dangerous situations." According to a 2012 CNCNews.com report, airlines must let passengers fly with pigs if they are for such emotional support. The department published a manual in July of that year designed to "help carriers and indirect carriers and their employees/contractors that provide services or facilities to passengers with disabilities, assist those passengers in accordance with" the Air Carrier Access Act. Here is a scenario described in the manual. "A passenger arrives at the gate accompanied by a pot-bellied pig. She claims that the pot-bellied pig is her service animal. What should you do?" "Generally, you must permit a passenger with a disability to be accompanied by a service animal," reads the manual. "However, if you have a reasonable basis for questioning whether the animal is a service animal, you may ask for some verification." The manual instructs airline carriers and their employees to begin by asking questions about the animal's training and what service it performs for the individual. "If you are not satisfied with the credibility of the answers to these questions or if the service animal is an emotional support or psychiatric service animal, you may request further verification," the guidebook states. "You should also call a CRO [Complaints Resolution Official] if there is any further doubt as to whether the pot-bellied pig is the passenger's service animal." If the answers are satisfactory, pigs, which can weigh as much as 300 pounds, must be accepted aboard the plane. "Finally, if you determine that the pot-bellied pig is a service animal, you must permit the service animal to accompany the passenger to her seat provided the animal does not obstruct the aisle or present any safety issues and the animal is behaving appropriately in a public setting," the manual states. So, I guess, some pigs can fly. Source: http://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/emotional-support-animals-access-or-no-2069 1/ A recent article in The New Yorker (?PETS ALLOWED: Why are so many animals now in places where they shouldn?t be?? October 20, 2014) highlights the disconnect between perception and reality when businesses must deal with patrons attempting to bring ?emotional support animal? (ESAs) into public areas. The author, Patricia Marx, chronicles five days in which she took various, less-than-cuddly animals (namely, a red-eared slider turtle, a Mexican milk snake, a four-and-one-half feet tall alpaca, a Royal Palm turkey, and a one-year-old pig) around places in New York City and Boston. She attempted to enter public areas with the animals, including museums, high-end fashion stores, and restaurants, and use public transportation. Her purpose? To highlight how little individuals, especially business owners and employees, know about the law surrounding ESAs. The article may also demonstrate what we know from our clients: despite the letter of the law, businesses will go to great lengths, even accepting absurd applications of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), to avoid litigation. Based on Marx?s experiences, businesses rarely challenged her and allowed her to bring all sorts of animals into these businesses when she simply said ?I have a letter? and it was ?against the law? to exclude the animal. Marx emphasizes that the perception that businesses must accommodate purported ESAs is not only mistaken, but it is also exploited by many ESA owners at the expense of the experience of other customers. The article raises an important question that businesses are facing on an increasing basis: what do you do when a customer demands that an ESA be allowed to accompany him or her onto the premises? The answer, surprisingly, is not typically based on federal law, but on individual states? laws and a business?s tolerance of animals on its premises. The ADA, which is routinely cited by individuals who seem to be taking advantage of the perception that ESAs must be granted access, does not mandate free entry of any animal into public accommodations. Only a ?service animal? can gain entrance to public accommodations under Title III of the ADA and, since March 15, 2011, the U.S. Department of Justice defined a ?service animal? solely as a dog (or a miniature horse) that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. 28 C.F.R. ?36.104. In contrast, ESAs are untrained animals that provide solace to someone with a mental condition, and the ESAs that accompanied Marx around New York are not included in the ADA?s definitions. Animals that only provide ?emotional support? to people with disabilities, even if those animals are dogs and miniature horses, are specifically excluded from the definition of ?service animal? and thus not entitled to access to public accommodations. Even if an ESA is used as part of a person?s medical treatment plan as ?therapy animal,? the ADA does not compel businesses to accommodate the animal under Title III. Moreover, according to the ADA regulations, service animals must also be under the control of the owner, either by physical means (such as with a harness or leash) or non-physical means (such as through voice or visual signals) where the user cannot maintain a physical restraint. Thus, even if an ESA is granted access to a business, nothing in the ADA provides the animal unfettered reign to interfere with the experiences of the customers around it. Even though the ADA does not compel businesses to permit access to ESAs, a few federal and varying state laws may require access in narrow circumstances, thus causing increased confusion for businesses. The Fair Housing Act requires landlords and homeowners associations to provide a reasonable accommodation for individuals with disabilities, which may or may not require that permission be granted to tenants and owners to bring ESAs onto residential properties. The Air Carrier Access Act of 1986 provides that air carriers must permit service animals to accompany passengers under certain restrictions, but does not specifically exclude ESAs from its definition of ?service animal.? However, in both the housing and air travel scenarios, the owner of the animal must have a corroborating letter from a health professional regarding the need for the ESA. Some states have also passed laws that might provide access for ESAs as a reasonable accommodation. Some of these state laws restrict the reasonable accommodation to disabled employees, while others are more general in nature. Thus, while a business generally is not required to allow access for ESAs under the ADA, uncertainty reigns in this area due to other statutes that might provide access in certain situations. Given the vast confusion surrounding ESA access to public accommodations, businesses are wise to develop plans for addressing customers who present themselves with such animals. The first step is to determine if any state laws where the business operates compel access for an ESA. Equally important is to determine what state laws and regulations, such as health and safety codes, may prohibit the presence of ESAs and whether there may be exceptions for ESAs. Even if federal and state laws do not compel access for an ESA, many businesses may wish to accommodate such animals (if not otherwise prohibited) if it will avoid unpleasant confrontations and potentially bring a client in the door. Business have alternatives to allowing ESAs full access, including requiring the owner to hold and maintain physical control of the animal throughout the time spent at the business, requiring the animal to be housebroken, or providing a designated area for animals while their owners are on-site. Ultimately, businesses should consider what factors will lead them to refuse access to ESAs and train their employees accordingly. Even with a plan, businesses will likely continue to struggle with the increased demand for ESA access until federal and state laws on the issue can be reconciled. _______________________________________________ nagdu mailing list nagdu at nfbnet.org http://nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nagdu_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for nagdu: http://nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nagdu_nfbnet.org/judotina48kg%40gmail.com From judotina48kg at gmail.com Tue Dec 2 17:11:58 2014 From: judotina48kg at gmail.com (Tina Thomas) Date: Tue, 2 Dec 2014 17:11:58 -0800 Subject: [Cagdu] FW: [Nfbc-info] FYI FW: Communication # 20: International Day of Persons with Disabilities - December 2014, What to Expect In-Reply-To: <001901d00e4d$6b858ed0$4290ac70$@michaelhingson.com> References: <001901d00e4d$6b858ed0$4290ac70$@michaelhingson.com> Message-ID: <056101d00e96$23f534a0$6bdf9de0$@gmail.com> Subject: Communication # 20: International Day of Persons with Disabilities - December 2014, What to Expect Good Afternoon - In support/recognition of International Day of Persons with Disabilities the Transportation Security Administration Disability Branch would like to share the attached "What to Expect" document. Dudley Hanks arrived at the Edmonton International Airport Nov. 27 with his wife, after returning from a trip to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Hanks is blind and the couple was accompanied by his guide dog of five years, Michener, a German Shepherd. When a cab from Airport Taxi Service pulled up to the taxi stand, Hanks heard the cab driver yell to the dispatcher: "The dog has got to go in a van." Another couple took that taxi. Hanks said he talked to the dispatcher about his guide dog and said they didn't require a van. Hanks said the dispatcher mentioned the possibility of allergies.Another taxi eventually arrived and the couple and Michener were accepted as customers. "This is one of those things that, in Alberta in particular, there's a lack of awareness and I wanted to make sure the taxi service at the airport becomes aware of their obligations to accommodate guide dogs," Hanks said. Annoyed at the situation, Hanks contacted the Edmonton Police Service, and was directed to the Alberta Human Rights Commission, then to the Vehicle for Hire Commission, and to the RCMP detachment at the airport. Alberta's Service Dogs Act states it is illegal to discriminate against someone with a disability based on the fact he or she is using a service dog. Contravention of the act could result in a fine of up to $3,000. The act specifically refers to taxi drivers who may have an allergy to dogs: "It is important that you provide the allergy information to the individual who ordered the taxi, and order another taxi from your company requesting that a priority response be provided," says the Alberta Human Services website. A spokesperson with Airport Taxis told CTV News on Friday the driver had been fired after company officials looked at security footage. The company said it has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to denying rides to potential customers. Hanks doesn't know if the driver should have lost his job. A fine might have done more to change the driver's attitude, he said. Hanks has a condition called retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that has essentially caused his retinas to dry up. His vision has become progressively worse over the years. "For all intents and purposes, I've been blind for the last five years," he said. It's not the first time he's been told he can't bring his guide dog somewhere. He's been approached on an LRT train and told that a German Shepherd cannot be a guide dog. He said he was once told he couldn't enter a restaurant at Fort Edmonton Park. "It doesn't happen often but it does happen." -----Original Message----- From: nagdu [mailto:nagdu-bounces at nfbnet.org] On Behalf Of Dudley Hanks via nagdu Sent: Thursday, December 04, 2014 12:04 AM To: NAGDU Mailing List, the National Association of Guide Dog Users Subject: [nagdu] News Report Regarding Refusal of Service For those who are interested, here is a link to a news report regarding the refusal of my Guide by a cab driver: http://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=506265&binId=1.1203428&playlistPageN um=1 BTW, I talked to the police officer who is investigating and was told the driver has been identified, and that they are now in the process of tracking down the dispatcher. Tina Subject: Guide Dogs night before Christmas Guide Dogs' Night Before Christmas. By Jenine Stanley 'Twas the night before Christmas and the kennels were still, with most dogs now asleep having eaten their fill. The Labradors sprawled out, quite snug in their beds, while visions of ANYTHING edible danced in their heads. the Goldens and Shepherds curled up on the floor, some twitched in their sleep and some even did snore. The dog food was stacked in the feed room with care, in hopes that a trainer soon would be there. On the window ledge, one of the kennel cats lay, surveying the lawn at the end of this day. Something was different, that little cat knew. Tonight something would happen, it had to be true. For that day as the workers had left to go home, They'd wished Merry Christmas! before starting to roam. The dogs had noticed it to during this past week's walks, the trainers seemed just that much happier and eager to talk. In the mall where they worked through the maze of people and stores, there were decoration and music and distractions galore! Most dogs pranced along without worry or fear, but some balked at the man on the sleigh and those fake looking deer. The cat was almost asleep too when he first heard the sound, a whoosh through the air and a jingle around. It reminded him of a dog's collar when the animal shook, but this sound kept on growing. He'd better go look. >From the ceiling there came a faint sort of thunk, as the kennel cat climbed to the highest pile of junk. Once before people had worked on the roof, and come down through the trap door to a chorus of "Woooof!" But the dogs still were quiet, all sleeping so sound, as this man dressed in red made his way right on down. He patted the cat as he climbed past his spot, then made his way right to the trainers' coffee pot. A shepherd sat up, not fully awake, then a Golden followed her with a mighty loud shake. That did it! All the dogs sprang to life with loud noise. In spite of the din, the old man kept his poise. He filled the pot full and it started to brew, then he pulled up a chair and took in the view. Dogs all around him, so carefully bred, he knew well their jobs, the blind people they led. Some had stopped barking and looked at him now, while others delighted in their own deafening howl. Laying a finger in front of his lips, the jolly old man silenced the excitable yips. "You all may not know me, but I'm Santa Claus," the old man smiled and took a short pause, While he filled up his mug with hot liquid and cream, "I've always wanted to stop here. It's been one of my dreams." The cat had climbed down and was exploring Santa's sack. "Yes, little kitty, that's an empty pack." Santa smiled as he drank and looked at those eyes, deep brown ones and gold ones held wide in surprise. Some of these dogs, he'd seen just last year, in their puppy homes, cute and full of holiday cheer. He'd seen the effects of a pup on the tree, but now they were here at the school, just waiting to be. "I didn't bring you presents or bones just to chew. I'll tell you something better, what you are going to do." "You all will work hard and the trainers will share, both praise and correction, gentle and fair." "You'll go lots of places and face big scary things. You'll ride buses and subways and hear fire sirens ring." "Cars will drive at you but you will stand strong, not moving into danger, not moving toward wrong." "And then just when you think that this trainer's the best, the kindest, and funnest person, toss away all the rest," "That trainer will begin to ignore you and give you away, handing your leash over despite your dismay." "Now the person who pets you and feeds you will be a blind person. That's a person who can't see." " This man or this woman may see just a tad, but their view's missing parts or the focus is bad." "So you, well trained dogs, will act as their eyes. You will work as a team and discover the size" "Of this great world we live in, because you will go a million new places with this person, you know." Santa sipped at his coffee and looked over the brood, knowing what he had to say next might sound kind of rude. "Not all of you will make it and become canine guides. Your time here isn't wasted though. You won't be cast aside." "Some of you will be drug dogs and some will find bombs. Some will become pets in a home with a dad and a mom." "All these things are important. People wait on long lists, to receive such good dogs as you, the school folks insist." The last drop of coffee had gone into his cup as Santa turned, smiling at each wide eyed pup. "The best gift of all is to give something back. That's why there's nothing for you all inside of my pack." Draining his mug, Santa went to each pen, and petted and scratched each dog again and again. "Now next year and many more years after that, you all will give gifts wherever you're at." "You might lick a hand that's had a bad day, Or notice a car and step out of the way." "You might help catch a crook or discover some loot, Or just bring some joy to a tired old man in a funny red suit." "Your master will love you and treat you with care. In return, your training and trust will always be there." After the last dog had been petted and soothed, Santa put away the coffee pot and made ready to move. Up the ladder he rose to the door high above, with a smile and a wave as he slipped on his gloves. And all the dog ears were pricked as he disappeared out of sight. "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night!" Easton, an Air Force veteran who served from 2001-2005, lost most of his vision due to an eye disease. Chestnut is Easton's guide dog. With his faithful companion by his side, Easton is able to get around his neighborhood in San Luis Obispo. Chestnut also guides Easton from Central California to the VA Hospital in San Francisco's Outer Richmond District, where he receives medical treatment for his eyes.? But recently, the VA Hospital delivered some not-so-welcoming news, telling Easton that he could no longer bring Chestnut into the eye exam room at the hospital.? "I was told by the Patient Advocate Office as well as the eye clinic that the only option was to have a family member or a friend watch my dog for me during my exam," Easton told SF Weekly. "I was told if that wan't an option that I was to call Animal Control and have them take my guide dog to the shelter at my own expense just for the short duration of my appointment." Easton says that he was advised to "leave his dog in the car." Obvious questions arose, such as: leave Chestnut in what car? A blind person can't legally drive. As a person who lives on disability insurance Easton can hardly afford boarding fees. And besides, how would Easton get from the pound?which is in the Mission?to the VA Hospital in the Outer Richmond without his guide dog? "I depend on the VA for treatment," Easton said. "Putting my dog in a shelter is ridiculous. It's dangerous for me as well as my dog." According to Easton, the hospital claims that the exam room is a "sterile area." "This is false," Easton claims. "Gown and scrub down procedures are not taking place in the exam rooms." ?He also reports incidents of food in the exam rooms. SF Weekly reached out to Judi Cheary, Director of Public Affairs for the VA Hospital, who said the VA would handle the matter.?"We will be looking into his specific concerns regarding the eye clinic," Cheary replied. "Also our overall process for accommodating service animals in our medical center. We will be reaching out to Matthew to get his feedback and input." Bryan Bashin, Executive Director of the San Francisco chapter of the Lighthouse for the Blind, was pretty upset after hearing about Easton's situation, calling it "discriminatory."? "The Lighthouse For the Blind is dismayed that the Veteran's Administration, of all agencies, chose to discriminate against a blind person who uses a guide dog," Bashin told SF Weekly. "The local Veteran's Administration leadership should know that guide dogs are legally allowed in all places of public accommodations, which includes public spaces, hallways, and waiting rooms where members of the general public are allowed." Apparently, the VA Hospital is exempt from the Americans With Disabilities Act. "Because we are a federal government facility, access to VA is governed by the Rehabilitation Act," Cheary said. "ADA does not govern access or admission to VA facilities or property."? She added: "We apologize for Matthew not being allowed to keep his service animal with him in the exam room.?This is not the type of experience we want our veterans to have." As our story was being filed, Easton called us with great news. "I just got done on the phone and the VA Hospital is changing their policy," Easton said. "They were cooperative and listened. So excited!" Cheary confirmed that the hospital had indeed altered its policy.? -----Original Message----- From: nagdu [mailto:nagdu-bounces at nfbnet.org] On Behalf Of Aaron Cannon via nagdu Sent: Saturday, December 13, 2014 7:08 PM To: NAGDU Mailing List, the National Association of Guide Dog Users Subject: [nagdu] Blind Vet has guide dog banned from hospital http://www.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2014/12/12/blind-vets-guide-dog-banned-fro m-va-hospital _______________________________________________ nagdu mailing list nagdu at nfbnet.org http://nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nagdu_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for nagdu: http://nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nagdu_nfbnet.org/judotina48kg%40gmail.com From judotina48kg at gmail.com Wed Dec 17 09:51:44 2014 From: judotina48kg at gmail.com (Tina Thomas) Date: Wed, 17 Dec 2014 09:51:44 -0800 Subject: [Cagdu] FW: [nagdu] Florida: Is your pet really a service animal? Source URL: http://postonpolitics.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2014/12/15/is-your-pet-really-a-service-animal-bill-makes-it-a-crime-to-lie-about-it/ Trying to pass your family pet off as a service animal would be against the law under a bill proposed by Rep. Jimmie Smith, R-Inverness. ?I love that people love their animals and want to take them with them,? said Smith. But when people bring their pet into restaurants and businesses pretending it is a service animal and that animal misbehaves, ?it distracts from people?s trust in what a service dog is.? Smith filed a similar bill last year after he was approached by disability rights groups about the increase in pet owners claiming their pet is a service animal. The bill failed when it was not called up for a committee hearing. Smith said he tweaked this year?s bill, HB 71, after he spoke with representatives of restaurant, entertainment and business trade groups. Although much of the bill reiterates rights and rules included in the Americans with Disabilities Act, in also makes misrepresenting your pet as a service animal a second-degree misdemeanor. The punishment: 30 hours of community service for an organization that assists the disabled or other group decided by a judge. The community service must be completed within six months. ?It?s so easy to basically defraud the system,? Smith said. ?All you have to do is buy a vest or tags and when you?re challenged you say, ?talk to my lawyer.?? To combat that defense, Smith?s bill also includes two questions that businesses can ask: Is the animal a service animal required because of a disability? What tasks has the animal been trained to perform? The bill also defines service animal to apply to dogs and miniature horses, not flying squirrels or other animals. ?One amusement park said someone came in with a flying squirrel and claimed it was a service animal,? Smith said, adding that the law is specifically intended to protect those with invisible disabilities, such as PTSD, allergies, diabetes and vertigo ?It?s quite apparent some are not service animals.? Successful training also requires that we know what works and what doesn't. That's where the opinions come in handy. For instance, if you poll a group of dog trainers you will discover that Clicker Training is either the hottest thing since sliced bread -- or a gimmicky fad. Somewhere in between those extremes is a perspective on training that offers some unique insights -- but it "ain't magic." If you would like to get a quick look at this middle ground of clicker training, try this simple experiment. Take a ball and hold it at arm's length. Now drop the ball and try to say the words, "Good boy" at the exact instant the ball is at the half-way point. If you had trouble connecting the praise to the mid-point of the ball's descent, don't blame your timing. In order to mark the exact instant the ball is at the half-way point you have three alternatives - and two of them don't work. First, you could begin saying "good boy" BEFORE the ball hits the middle. Second, you could start the phrase precisely at the mid-point and end about 1/2 second after the ball hits the ground. Third, you have to say "good boy" incredibly fast. When forced to adapt to the new necessity of timeliness, most people immediately try to shorten the length of the signal that marks the correct behavior. And that's the first major reason that I use a clicker -- it's quicker and potentially more accurate than verbal praise as a means of transmitting information. Every method of training attempts to coordinate two fundamental aspects of behavior -- information and motivation. The most effective methods provide the animal with the information necessary to understand the task, and link the behavior to some motivation that insures reliable performance. The advantages and disadvantages of a method of training become clear when viewed from this perspective. For instance, the most common use of verbal praise is to provide motivation, for correctly completing a behavior. We intuitively understand that applying the praise immediately after a behavior tends to make it happen again. The praise helps the animal grasp that performing the behavior "causes" a pleasant dose of human attention and affection. If one is concerned with sustaining or building motivation, this is a perfect way to use verbal praise. While praise works well to provide motivation, it is a more difficult tool to use to provide information about how to do the behavior. To see how important it is to have an effective information signal, imagine that you are teaching a new behavior to an untrained dog. In the early stages of learning any behavior, a dog is dependent on the trainer for clear signals that identify which part of the behavior "caused" success or failure. Each success becomes important information that is then linked to that specific behavior -- like correctly placing another piece into a picture puzzle. The faster the dog can assimilate the information, the faster the behavior takes shape and becomes part of the dog's repertoire. The dog uses the timing of the "praise signal" to know how to put another piece in the puzzle. Since your goal is to provide information about how to do the behavior, the signal you use must be quick -- the quicker, the better. While speed is an essential part of your information signal, it is not the only criterion that makes a good "info signal." The things that make up a good info signal are relative to the animal, the training task and environment. For instance, sounds don't work as information signals if the dog can't hear them. Likewise, hand signals are pretty useless if the dog is visually impaired or the behavior requires the dog to be looking away from the handler. Here's a simple way to decide if a given signal is the best one to give your dog the right INFO. I - Immediate: You must be able to present the signal in connection with the correct behavior. It is the timing of the signal that tells the animal WHICH behavior to remember. N - Noticeable: Whether you use a sight, sound or smell as your information signal, it must be easily recognized across the background sights, sounds and smells of the environment. If you are back lit, hand signals in front of your body will disappear inside your silhouette. If you are training in a roomful of other trainers, you will have to modify the way you talk in order for your dog to distinguish your voice apart from all the others. F - Fast : In order to mark a behavior that may last a mere 1/10th of a second, you need a signal that can be delivered in 1/10th of a second. O - One of a kind: Unless your Info Signal is unique and consistent, you will force the animal to focus on the signal instead of focusing on the behavior. The idea is to prevent the dog from having to think about anything other than the information about the behavior. Once you get used to thinking in terms of these criteria, you can start evaluating the signals you use to send information to your dog. For instance for almost all serious training I use a clicker. It fits the INFO rules better than anything else I have found. That doesn't mean I always use a clicker. When training at a distance, the clicker isn't noticeable so I use a whistle. When training deaf animals, I use a hand signal as a "clicker". If I don't happen to have a clicker, I simply say "good." Though the verbal info signal isn't as fast as a clicker, it's always immediate -- unless I am chewing gum or talking. The best place to start with clicker training is to realize that a clicker is merely a construction tool, like any other. Clicker training isn't magic, even if the results sometimes appear to be. Learning to use a clicker doesn't mean you have to give up your knowledge of "what works" and "what doesn't. If you are willing to take a shot at it, I will provide you with sound information about effectively applying this tool to obedience training. Hopefully, the results of using this tool will motivate you to use it often. We Bridge kids were thinking as always of you. ... We'd seen how the holidays weren't bright this year, Heard you whisper so often, "I wish you were here!" We know how you wish you could just stay in bed And sleep through the holiday lying ahead, When all celebrate with their loved ones so near... Unless they have loved ones on this side this year. But we're no less alive here, on the other side. If you could just see us, you would've laughed and not cried. The dogs all in harness, pulling the sleigh. The cats all in Santa hats pointing the way. The pet birds all flying back over the rainbow, Bound homeward in spite of Earth's darkness and snow. All the pets that you've lost, pets for whom you've cried, Flying home on this Christmas to be by your side. If you feel warm fur brush you when no pet's around, Hear a soft bark or purr, just a ghost of a sound, We're trying to tell you we're visiting this way, And our visits, even rainbows, can be on any day. But for Christmas we have something special to do, A sleigh full of happy dream visits for you. On doggy, on kitty, on winged friend and ferret! The love that you lavished, we mean now to share it! We're fetching that love home, the way we once played, With the closeness we shared and the memories we made. Our Earth lives with you were too short for us, too, And on this Christmas Eve we have so much to do. So all through this night as you sleep in your beds, Sweet visions of fur babies dance in your heads. This one special night we can bring you Home for a while, Your true home in Heaven, where again you will smile. Over the rainbow you'll fly, for a short while this night, Hours that you'll be happy, hours that will feel right, Hours to cuddle and hug us, to run and to play, Before the return to Earth in our magic way. And when you awaken and face Christmas Day, We pray you'll remember your trip on our sleigh, But in case you forget, just remember our love. Remember us watching you, your angels above. Sending love wrapped in rainbows, shining and bright, Love that will guide you through the darkest night, Love found in each memory unwrapped through the year, Replacing dark sorrows with Christmas cheer. Leave the toys to St. Nick, we Bridge kids bring dreams, Sweet visits to remind you all is not as it seems When you look all around you with tired Earthly eyes. If you saw as we do, there'd be joy and surprise. There are fur angels waiting by those Christmas trees, Always there for you and hearing your pleas. We're never more than a thought away from your home, You're never forgotten, you're never alone. Nor are we alone here, with our Rainbow Bridge friends. We know only joy here, the celebrating never ends, And after our reunions with you Christmas Eve, We Bridge kids will party like you'd never believe. But we'll slip away often to be by your side. Sitting there watching you, eyes open wide, Praying you'll be able to catch a glimpse of us, too.
