The Board will then send a copy of the report to all of its stakeholders and post a copy on its Web site. We will give each of you an opportunity to review the document and then schedule conference calls with each of you to go over any questions or concerns you may have. Briefly, below are a few bullets to keep in mind when reviewing the document: ? After the report is submitted, the Committee may have follow up questions for the Board. ? Sunset Review hearings will take place in Spring 2013 ? Concurrently, the Committee will pursue legislation to extend the Board until a Committee recommendation has been made. Also, there will be clean up legislation that will address minor technical changes to the B&P Code. ? According to the Committee, the Board?s governing laws (licensing, fees, guide dog instruction, etc.) will remain in place regardless of a decision to extend the Board. The functions may continue in a Board structure, or move to another Department. I look forward to talking to each of you in the coming months. Take care. Does the term "applicant refer to a school or an instructor? There needs to be a parenthetical fraise to clarify this point. To leave it ambiguous would be a big loop hole. The problem is made even worse with the wide spread adoption of the more general term "service dog" to our guides. Ken ----- Original Message ----- From: Shannon L. Best Tina YOU AND YOUR GUIDE DOG FEATURES A PRESENTATION BY CALIFORNIA'S STATE BOARD OF GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND, WEDNESDAY NOV. 14, 2012, 8 PM EST, THE GUIDE DOG ROOM: WWW.ACCESSIBLEWORLD.ORG NEWSWIRE: California is the only State in the Union with a State Guide Dog Board. This Board is the licensing agency within the Department of Consumer Affairs which licenses California's three guide dog schools and their instructors. On or about the year 1948, we had 21 so-called guide dog schools in California. At that time, blind persons could get guide dogs through the mail and with Braille manuals for training purposes. Some of our pioneers in the blindness movement sought legislation to create this much needed Board. The Board cut the schools down to three which we have today. Our presenters today will be Board President Eric Holm and the Executive Officer, Antonette Sorric. Please read more about these fine people below. Board President Eric Holm, after serving as a volunteer, speaker, and independent consultant with Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc., was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the State Board of Guide Dogs for the Blind, on October 29, 2008 and elected Board President on October 25, 2010. Holm graduated from Saint Mary's College (BA), San Francisco Law School (JD), and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Holm served as a Federal Adjudications Officer for the US. Department of Justice and the U.S Department of Homeland Security. Holm also held the position of Vice President and Chief Stewart of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1616. Holm actively engages as a member of the National Federation of the Blind and the Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors. Presently, Holm also serves on the City of San Rafael Park & Recreation Commission and the City's ADA & Accessibility Advisory Committee, educating and advancing the rights and responsibilities of persons with disabilities. Ford, Holm's beautiful Yellow Labrador, nurtured and trained at Guide Dogs for the Blind, assists him in living life to the fullest. Executive Officer, Antonette Sorrick has served as Deputy Director for Board Relations for the Department of Consumer Affairs since 2005. Prior to that, she was the Department's Assistant Deputy Director for the Consumer and Community Relations Division. She has also served as a policy and research manager for the California Building Industry Association.
