Kirsten Barrett and her labrador Norman were attacked outside their home in Corntown, Bridgend, by a rottweiler and a Staffordshire bull terrier cross. Police believe that the dogs had been dumped by their owners. The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association (GDBA) said microchipping was affordable and would change the culture of ownership. Norman lost part of an ear and blood in the attack and needed emergency surgery. Neither of the animals was microchipped, making it unlikely the owners will be found. The attack on Norman and Mrs Barrett, who is completely blind, was witnessed by her seven-year-old daughter as they left the house to go to the school bus stop. Mrs Barrett said all three had been left traumatised. "Apparently the dogs had been hanging around our street since about ten o'clock the previous night," she told BBC Wales. Photo: Norman had injuries across his sides and legs "The rottweiler just jumped on Norman, and started biting and shaking him. "I told my daughter to carry on walking away, so she didn't get hurt, while I tried to get in between them. But it was too strong, and I got bitten on the hand and leg as well. "Eventually I managed to get Norman into a neighbour's house, but even then this dog was flying at the glass trying to get at him." Mrs Barrett praised her neighbours' efforts to help. "One chased the dogs away with a stick, and another rushed Norman and me to the vet," she added. "It could have been much worse, but even so I'm angry and frightened about the sort of person who'd dump dogs like this on the street. "My daughter's too terrified to talk about it." Across the UK attacks on guide dogs average seven per month, with six incidents reported in Wales in the 18 months to December 2011. 'Back-street breeders' Each year four guide dogs are so badly injured that they either have to be put down or are immediately retired. Of those who make a full physical recovery, many are too traumatised ever to work again. Kirsten Barrett was also injured in the attack James White, the GDBA's head of campaigns, said: "We've met opposition to our call for microchipping, from people who say it's too costly and too bureaucratic, but a microchip costs around ?10-15. "Even if you add on a small amount per dog for the administration of a national database, then you're still talking about something which is eminently affordable." "Quite frankly if you can't afford a microchip, then you can't afford to own a dog responsibly, and shouldn't have it in the first place. "Responsible ownership is at the heart of this. [Microchipping] won't catch everyone, but it will change the culture of dog ownership, and stamp out the back-street breeders. "We'd also call on police forces to take these attacks more seriously. Of 147 attacks between June 2010 and last December, I'm not aware of a single prosecution of a dog owner." The UK government has launched a consultation exercise on compulsory microchipping, but have given no firm commitment to making it law in England. However a Welsh government spokesman said it was closer to bringing a bill before the Welsh assembly, with consultation early in 2012. _______________________________________________ nagdu mailing list nagdu at nfbnet.org http://nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nagdu_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for nagdu: http://nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nagdu_nfbnet.org/tinadt%40sbcglobal.net From Kenvolonte at comcast.net Thu Jan 19 05:36:43 2012 From: Kenvolonte at comcast.net (Ken Volonte) Date: Thu, 19 Jan 2012 05:36:43 -0800 Subject: [Cagdu] FW: [nagdu] South East Wales: Microchip call over dogattacks References: <008801ccd65d$e26404d0$a72c0e70$@net> Message-ID: <07B20A0D9BA14814AA54D4AC73C77C3C@kenvolonte> Why are there so many more guide dog attacks in the UK than here? Today comes an ultrasound with a specialist from Davis to once and for all rule out poisoning. Dr. is leaning to the explanation, if that is the right word, that Edison was kicked in the abdomen rather than being hit by a car. Again, I'm up and down with him. I have concerns about my vet. For one thing, why does he not have an adequate ex-ray machine at his office? Why does GDB think so little of our ability to check on our dogs that they insisted on his being hospitalized when there would be no one there to watch him? What if he's bleeding internally? Ultrasound in six hours and counting. My chest hurts. I gotta go. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I would suggest that just for your peace of mind. Many times, the schools are not suggesting that you can't take care of the dog by saying you should take him to a vet hospital, or even better yet, to the school for their vet to take care of him for a while, because they think you can't take care of him, but often the school vets will have more knowledge about taking care of a guide dog then a regular vet, and if medication has to be administered round the clock, and the vet doesn't want your dog to lick the medication or to create more damage by moving around a lot, they will ask that you take them to a vet hospital or the school. It really is a safety measure for the dog. I hope this makes sense and helps relieve you a little. I am thinking of you and Edison a lot and keeping you guys in my prayers. Yesterday we took Edison to a full service animal hospital just north of Sacramento. They were going to do ultra sounds, but we already had one. Every test they asked to do, we had already done. After all the speculation about rat poison and diaphragmatic holes bruising his liver and I don't know what all, the worked is, Edison has four broken ribs and will be on the injured list for about 6 weeks. Dr. Runion advised against surgery, and Dr. Wong agreed. They upped his pain medication and said that I shouldn't feel guilty, as I had done all I could and more. They did offer one caution. "Edison's going to want to play tugg-a-war in about two weeks. Give him the full six weeks to just rest". So he's not quite himself, but he offers everyone a lick and a wagy tale. His ears are down. They look folded into themselves. The docs say I will know when he's out of pain because his ears will once again be up and listening. Thanks for all your thoughts. GDB has been following me through this whole process Next week, I'm having both gates fitted with springs so they'll close by themselves. That's all I can do. Other people have suggested invisible fences, but I don't want Edison to be afraid of going outside, etc. Thanks for your support. I'd appreciate calls or posts. My phone is 209-464-6766. Thanks. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Make sure he gets that six weeks of medical leave so that his ribs will heal properly. Also, as a suggestion, put a bell on Edison so that you can hear where he is in and outside the house.
