From kenvolonte at comcast.net Sat Jul 9 06:15:27 2011 From: kenvolonte at comcast.net (Ken Volonte) Date: Sat, 9 Jul 2011 06:15:27 -0700 Subject: [Cagdu] minutes June meeting Message-ID: <37DC978E112E473E85D8941C09869236@ken5f734aa928e> Minutes June Meeting The meeting was called to order at 6:40. Present were the gang of four: Ken, Shannon, Roger and Tina. Minutes for the Apr. meeting were approved. Treasurer's report was read and approved. We showed a beginning balance of: $1728.90. Deposits of $100.00 for candy money, $.02 interest. Withdrawal of $500.00 for Nagdu hot line leaving a closing balance of: $1328.92. We then discussed whether to order candy for sale at the national convention. After much consideration, Ken made the motion to order candy only for the state convention. Tina seconded the motion and it carried. Our main reason for opting not to sell World's Finest Chocolate was because of the heat and humidity of Florida, especially with people having to carry unsold cases back to their respective homes. Next, Tina reported on the progress of the hot line. She said that a choriculum was being developed and staff were being trained to work the hot line. Meeting adjourned at 7:25. Respectfully submitted, Ken Volonte, Secretary July 10 From kenvolonte at comcast.net Sun Jul 10 00:03:46 2011 From: kenvolonte at comcast.net (Ken Volonte) Date: Sun, 10 Jul 2011 00:03:46 -0700 Subject: [Cagdu] my lost guide Message-ID: This has been a long day. Edison escaped from our back yard early this morning. Early, when there were no cars on the street which usually sounds like the ocean. I called and called, then got dressed and started walking with my cane and his leash clicking and calling. I heard his bark and called again. He was perhaps three houses down. I ran back to the house as fast as I could, left the front door open and started dropping nuggets of kibble into his food boll. In a minute, he bounded through the door all glad to see me. I later discovered that the lock on my west gate was faulty; and the day progressed pleasantly. Tonight I let him out but stood outside figuring that when he was done, he'd come back to the door; but once he had escaped, he had a taste for more adventures in the neighborhood. It was now 10:30:pm. Again, I walked with cane and leash clicking and calling, but he was nowhere to be found. Velvet and I set off driving around the neighborhood looking for him. We phoned the S-mart, the pizza restaurant down the street, any place that had to do with food. Edison is, after all, a lab. Nobody had seen him. I called the police and animal control. There was nothing left to do but go home and wait. I also called GDB to report this incident. I left my name with the voice mail to which I was directed by another phone machine. When we got home, the phone was ringing. It was someone from Guide Dogs' kennel staff. She took down Edison's stats and time of loss, etc. While I was on the phone with her, the door bell rang. Two girls were standing there. "Are you a blind person", they wanted to know. They were embarrassed and feeling awkward. "Well, we think we have your dog." It was true enough. They had him on a thin plastic leash such as I've never run across. All of this was heard by the Guide Dogs person who thanked me for calling and rejoicing at the happy outcome. When I think of what could have happened... I don't think I'll sleep tonight. Edison had made his way to one of the sororities at UOP where there was a party going on. a cook out. He's a lab. What can I say. From shannonldillon at hotmail.com Sun Jul 10 13:17:54 2011 From: shannonldillon at hotmail.com (Shannon L. Would you please circulate this message throughout your membership? Thank you very much! Fraternally yours, Marion Gwizdala Are you a member of the National Association of Guide dog Users interested in volunteering to staff the NAGDU Information & advocacy Hotline? If you are willing to commit to at least 8 hours each month, as well as to attending monthly staff meetings, and meet the requirements below, we would like to hear from you. The first step in the application process is to attend the teleseminar being held on Sunday, August 21, 2011 at 8:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time (7:00 Central; 6:00 pm Mountain; and 5:00 pm Pacific). Space is filling up quickly and preference will be given to those wishing to apply. After the teleseminar, you will be asked to write a brief letter of interest and take a recorded mock call from a member of the selection committee who will play the part of an individual who is being denied access to a public accommodation. All of this may seem pretty intense for a voluntary position, but the callers to the hotline will expect someone who is highly skilled in resolving access issues. If you plan to apply to staff the hotline, please send your name, address, telephone number, and email address By Sunday, August 14 to Info at NAGDU.ORG Be sure to let us know of your interest in staffing the hotline so we can keep a record of those who attend. Job Description NAGDU Information & Advocacy Hotline Applicants should: Have good telephone etiquette; Possess sound problem solving skills; Be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of callers; Be able to remain calm in stressful situations; Be able to maintain detailed records; Be willing to attend regular training sessions & monthly teleconference meetings; Have the ability to stay on task; Must have a quiet environment in which to work; Have access to a computer and the internet; Prefer individuals who have been a member of NAGDU for at least one (1) year. Job Description Individuals who staff the hotline wil do so voluntarily; however, we expect staff members to commit to their work as if they were being paid. Hotline staff members will field calls from and provide guidance to individuals seeking information concerning the rights and responsibilities of service animal users. Members will be required to attend a training seminar prior to making their application. Volunteers will apply to staff the hotline by submitting a letter of interest to the selection committee. This letter should explain why the applicant is interested in staffing the hotline, how long the applicant has been using a guide dog, what, if any experience the applicant has had advocating for others, and what, if any, access issues the applicant has faced and how the issue was resolved. Before being selected, applicants will be required to demonstrate a basic understanding of the legal issues concerning access through a mock telephone call to the hotline. Those selected to staff the hotline must be willing to commit to at least eight (8) hours each month, keep all information about callers confidential, show no bias toward any training programs, and agree to the recording of all calls. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
