Present were: Shannon, Roger, Robert, Tina and Ken. Mike was not present at this meeting. Minutes for June were approved. Treasurer's report reflected no change. Our closing balance was $1328.92. Robert indicated that we now have our own account with Wells Fargo. The change was made because Chase Bank no longer honors our status as a 501c3. That designation is reserved for schools and churches. Shannon reported that Nagdu thanked us for our contribution to the hot line. She also made sure that the list of colleges and universities for our seminar got to everybody. Robert suggested that we ask the hotel chef about concerns with guide dogs in restaurants. Meeting ended at 7:15. Respectfully Submitted, Ken Volonte -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It's always good to refresh your memory on the rights and responsibilities of service dogs and their owners. I have heard supposed statements of the law which are based more on opinion than on what the law really says. Not uncommonly, I hear these mistatements from users themselves. Please spread this announcement to guide dog users you know to help users become informed about their rights and, just as importantly, their responsibilities. Also, the definition of service dogs and what is or isn't a service dog has changed. SHANNON L. Anyone who attended the NFB National convention got an early chance to purchase the book in either print or Audio. Since its release it has been on the New York Times Best Seller list. This week it is #28 on the Nonfiction hard cover print books list. Mainly I am writing to tell you that Thunder Dog is now available in the Blio bookstore. If you are not familiar with Blio it is a product created and provided free of charge by K-NFB Reading Technologies. It is the only fully accessible eBook reader which is no surprise as we, the National Federation of the Blind helped create it. This eBook reader works on a variety of devices including Windows PC systems and IOS systems including iPhones and iPads. Many of you have asked when Thunder Dog would be available in the Blio format. The wait is over. Thanks for all your support and encouraging words. I hope you enjoy Thunder Dog and will continue to spread the word about this book which I pray will help change some people's attitudes about the blind and blindness. Happy reading. Dillon' Subject: from former "no dogs allowed" people Hi cagdu community. Pursuant to our last meeting, I spoke with several restaurateurs who used to not allow guide dogs in their establishments. They couldn't come to our convention because, in many cases, they are family businesses and can't get away. Here is what they had to say. We are new here, and we don't want to get into trouble with the health department. When you said that we wouldn't get into trouble, that's all we needed to hear. You're here because we asked a blind man to leave yesterday. He just dropped the handle to look at a wall menu board, but he didn't put his dog under a table or say anything, and so the dog just wandered around and almost made his way into our kitchen. You didn't do that. Your dog was under control at all times. We didn't want people who were allergic to dogs to just walk out of here and we didn't want to scare people who were afraid of dogs. When you asked the man at the next table if he minded that there was a guide dog, he said, "What dog. Oh I didn't even see him. Can I pet him"? That changed our minds. He's really old. got a patch of gray right here around the muzzle." It's like that when ever there's been trouble. The problem has always been with unwarranted fear or with not keeping the dog under control. I was surprised when these people remembered the incident. In some cases, they were 15 years ago. None the less, they talked about their experiences with me and with other guide dogs freely and in a friendly manner. "What happened to your old dog, the big yellow Lab. I liked him. So did my daughter. He washed her face all the time. She's your server today." -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
