From kenvolonte at comcast.net Fri Dec 3 10:24:08 2010 From: kenvolonte at comcast.net (Ken Volonte) Date: Fri, 3 Dec 2010 10:24:08 -0800 Subject: [Cagdu] looking for a new vet Message-ID: <1791013A8B8345CDB6143E6B9C68B3B7@ken5f734aa928e> For years, Edison has been under the care of Dr. Jim Walford. Gulliver felt his skillful hands before that. Dr. Walford's assistant Sandy was always willing to give advice, especially when we were contemplating the removal of our cat Peaches' front claws. A few weeks ago, I got a call from Sandy telling me that Dr. had a mass on his pancreas. From time to time, I would call the office to see how my friend Dr. Walford was doing. I didn't know it until just now, but he was my friend. He and his wife are spending time together. I don't know if Sue will keep the business open. She's a vet as well, but I think that I'm faced with the prospect of finding a new vet. I'm not ready. The need is there, but Jim Walford-- it's a betrayal. I don't know what it really is; I'm just shocked and angry. Where do I start looking? My friend Pam, a puppy raiser steered me away from one doc. That leaves fifteen to call and try to get a sense of who they are; but I have to say goodbye to Dr. Walford one last time. I'll make two more calls to the office: one to thank Sandy and the staff for their working with me, and one to have Edison's records transferred. Goodbye Jim. Live well the time you have. Know that your work was stellar and important to all who knew you. From shannonldillon at hotmail.com Mon Dec 6 08:17:51 2010 From: shannonldillon at hotmail.com (Shannon L. Meeting The meeting started at 6:30. Present were: Shannon, Roger, Tina, Juliette, Peter and Ken. Minutes of the short Oct. meeting were read and approved. Much of the meeting centered around Ken?s motion during the Oct. meeting to send $500.00 to NAGDU?s proposed hotline. Robert said that many other aphiliates of NFB had not given money Tina and Juliette felt that this was too much money to send to NAGDU for a line cite unseen. Shannon said that she would like for all maters involving money be put on the agenda so that we wouldn?t be caught by surprise next time. Robert moved that we wait to send money until such time as we?ve had a chance to use the line and see how it worked. Both Ken and Tina seconded the motion which was adopted. We then moved on to the question of doing a seminar in Stockton. Tina and Shannon are gathering names of colleges in the area. Ken is researching phacilities we might use as well as informing churches in the area so that blind congregants will know of the seminar. We?d like to hold this, our third seminar either in May or Sept. 2011. Meeting adjourned at 7:30. Respectfully Submitted, Ken Volonte, Secretary. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... MLAs also agreed to include protection for service animals, such as those used by people with disabilities and police dogs. The maximum fine for someone guilty of animal neglect under The Animal Protection Act is now $25,000 for each offence. Court imposed fines used to be a maximum of $5,000 for a first offence and $10,000 for subsequent offences. The inclusion of potential additional penalties for incidents involving police and guide dogs came at the request of NDP MLA David Forbes, who had earlier introduced a private member's bill to make it an offence to interfere with a service animal. "We're excited that it came so quickly together," Forbes said. Forbes said that if a guide dog belonging to someone with a disability or a police dog is injured or killed, costs to rehabilitate or replace the animal are steep. "When they are hurt or harassed or killed, it's a huge expense and it's real hole in peoples' lives," he said. "It's a big deal because (those service animals) are with them 24/7 and all of a sudden that service is gone." Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud said the need for tougher penalties under The Animal Protection Act became clear after a spike in the number of neglect cases in the province. Pet owners and agricultural producers need to know they have options other than causing an animal to be neglected, Bjornerud said. "There's no excuse for neglecting animals, whether it is livestock or whether it's pets. Whatever the situation may be out there, there's alternatives that you can do," he said, adding people can contact the SPCA, sell their livestock, or call a neighbour or municipal or provincial government office if they can't care for their livestock. An offence under act can now also bring up to two years in jail, rather than the previous six-month _______________________________________________ nagdu mailing list nagdu at nfbnet.org http://www.nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nagdu_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for nagdu: http://www.nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nagdu_nfbnet.org/tinadt%40sbcglobal.ne t From shannonldillon at hotmail.com Sun Dec 12 17:52:57 2010 From: shannonldillon at hotmail.com (Shannon L. In an attempt to help increase awareness of this problem and the importance of responsible dog ownership for the pet owning public, The Seeing Eye has launched a survey across the U.S. and Canada that will take an in-depth look at dog attacks and interference. The survey is open to all guide dog handlers in the United States and Canada and we will share our summary results upon request. We?re using an online service that we know to be user friendly for screen readers, so we strongly encourage you to participate and tell any other guide dog users you know about this opportunity by forwarding this email or sharing the call-in number. It?s very important that we get responses from people who have not encountered problems with other dogs as well as those who have, no matter which school their dogs are from. The data we collect from the survey will be essential in making our case with law enforcement and animal control officers as well as with legislators as we urge them to enact or strengthen laws to protect guide dog teams. The survey will take between 5 to 20 minutes depending on your answers. You may access the survey at the following link: http://alturl.com/a5kcg . For those of you who can't or don't want to take the survey online, you can call The Seeing Eye's main number, 800-539-4425, and ask for extension 1520. You will be asked to leave your name and phone number, and a volunteer will call you to conduct the survey by telephone. The preferred method though is to take the survey online, so I ask you to utilize that method if at all possible. All those who respond by Friday, January 7, 2011, will be entered in a raffle to win a $100 gift card. Thank you all, in advance, for helping us to better understand the scope of the issue and to work toward a solution to dog interference and dog attacks.
