From regenerative at earthlink.net Tue May 5 08:30:49 2009 From: regenerative at earthlink.net (Fred Chambers) Date: Tue, 5 May 2009 08:30:49 -0700 Subject: [Cagdu] letter to sponsers for local dog walk Message-ID: <701EC603-CF19-4C1A-AF33-2230ACBD17C9@earthlink.net> As a customer of your establishment for some little time, I'm writing you to ask if you would sponsor me in a three mile march. This march is being put on by the California Association of Guide Dog Users, and will occur on May 16. We are marching to demonstrate to the public that Guide Dogs are an effective mobility tool for quickly getting safely where we need to go. We are having such marches in many cities throughout California from San Diego to Sacramento. We would appreciate you sponsorship, as we need to procure insurance, water stations, and snacks for our marchers. At the end of the march, we might go to a restaurant for a fine brunch, or we might end up at a Cineplex for a movie; but when the march is done, we will all feel a sense of accomplishment and pride, and you will have been a part of history. Your contribution will not end with the march. The California Association of Guide Dog Users advocates tirelessly for the rights of blind people and our guides to be out and and abroad in the world. There are still incidents of guide dogs being denied access to taxi cabs, restaurants, hotels and other places of entertainment. You wouldn't think these problems still exist, but it does. If you can help in this endeavor, please send a check make out to CAGDU, along with your contact information to: National Federation of the Blind of California, 39481 Gallaudet Drive #127, Fremont, CA 94538. If you have any questions about this event or about the work of CAGDU, please contact Ken Volonte, Chairperson at kenvolonte at comcast.net, or you can reach him by phone at 209-464-6766. Thank you for sponsoring me. _______________________________________________ Cagdu mailing list Cagdu at nfbcal.org https://www.nfbcal.org/mailman/listinfo.cgi/cagdu From kenvolonte at comcast.net Wed May 6 16:34:28 2009 From: kenvolonte at comcast.net (Ken Volonte) Date: Wed, 6 May 2009 16:34:28 -0700 Subject: [Cagdu] we are here march Message-ID: <2E85034B58F549D9AD1C0A0E72CACEA4@ken5f734aa928e> Hi everybody. I just got permition from the city of Stockton for the march on the 16th. I didn't think things would fall together in time, but they did. Thanks Juliet for having the confidence in me to ask that I coordinate this march. This is only the second thing I've ever coordinated in my life. Emily, I'll be marching with Edison, one of the best guides I've ever had. Your knowledge and empathy with people made our training a success. We'll try anything and be safe in the process. Thanks Eric. You've always known the right words of encouragement and when I needed them. This letter is too sentimental. I gotta go. If any;one is interested, please contact me at kenvolonte at comcast.net or phone me at 209-464-6766. I have an idea of the way things should proceed, but sometimes I get a little ahead of myself. The first thing is a list of venders in California. I know some of you, but some people have moved, or are handling other, perhaps more product lines than I know about. I'd like to hear from you as well so we can set you up with what you need, and give your products a chance to sell themselves. Lots of hands on this year. As a potential buyer, I want to be able to walk away from just seeing your widget knowing exactly how I will use it or if I will use it at all. Perhaps I won't use it, but my friend over there will. It's just what she's been looking for. I want that kind of excitement and discovery in a welcoming atmosphere. I look forward to seeing all of you at convention. Message-ID: <939332.36203.bm@omp409.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Economist article on our hybrid research Link also included. The sound of silence Economist - UK Economist Electric cars and noise The sound of silence May 7th 2009 >From The Economist print edition Sound generators will make electric and hybrid cars safer WHEN cars run on electric power they not only save fuel and cut emissions but also run more quietly. Ordinarily, people might welcome quieter cars on the roads. However, as the use of hybrid and electric vehicles grows, a new concern is growing too: pedestrians and cyclists find it hard to hear them coming, especially when the cars are moving slowly through a busy town or manoeuvring in a car park. Some drivers say that when their cars are in electric mode people are more likely to step out in front of them. The solution, many now believe, is to fit electric and hybrid cars with external sound systems. A bill going through the American Congress wants to establish a minimum level of sound for vehicles that are not using an internal-combustion engine, so that blind people and other pedestrians can hear them coming. The bill's proponents also want that audible alert to be one that will help people judge the direction and speed of the vehicle. A similar idea is being explored by the European Commission. Although there is little data on accidents, the latest research suggests there is cause for concern. Vehicles operating in electric mode can be particularly hard to hear below 20mph (32kph), according to experiments by Lawrence Rosenblum and his colleagues at the University of California, Riverside. Above that speed the sound of the tyres and of air flowing over the vehicle start to make it more audible. The researchers made sophisticated recordings of Toyota Prius hybrids running on electric power and petrol-engined cars approaching at 5mph from different directions. These were played to a group of subjects wearing headphones. The subjects were asked to press one of two buttons to identify which way the vehicle was coming from as quickly and accurately as possible. As expected, they could determine the direction of the petrol-engined cars much faster. When natural background sounds, like the engine tickover of a parked car, were added, the hybrids' direction sometimes could not be detected until they were perilously close. Both sighted and blind subjects gave similar results. Beep, beep Dr Rosenblum and his colleagues recently repeated the experiment outside in a car park. This time blindfolded subjects stood three metres away from the point where the vehicles passed. The researchers found that the hybrid vehicles had to be around 65% closer to someone than a car with a petrol engine before the person could judge the direction correctly. What sort of noise should electric-powered cars make? They could, perhaps, beep as some pedestrian crossings do, or buzz like a power tool. Having worked with blind subjects, Dr Rosenblum is convinced of a different answer: "People want cars to sound like cars." The sound need not be very loud; just slightly enhancing the noise of an oncoming electric vehicle would be enough to engage the auditory mechanisms that the brain uses to locate approaching sounds, he adds. Systems to do this are already being developed. Lotus Engineering, the consultancy of a British sportscar-maker, recently signed an agreement with Harman Becker, a producer of audio systems, to commercialise one. Lotus has worked on a number of hybrid and electric vehicles and it was while these were moving around its factory that the engineers thought they would be safer if they made a noise. The system Lotus uses was originally developed for a different reason: to cancel out intrusive noises inside a car. Sound-cancelling works by analysing any unwanted frequencies and then producing counteracting ones. The Lotus system was adapted so that it could also produce sounds that change with speed and use of the throttle, providing a familiar audible "feedback" to drivers of vehicles with a silent engine. Adding external speakers allows pedestrians to hear the noise too. It is possible to create a different sound within a car from the one that is heard outside, says Colin Peachey, a chief engineer with Lotus. Manufacturers could create their own sounds according to how they perceive their models. Carmakers already take engine noises seriously enough to use acoustic engineers to tune exhaust pipes, especially for high-performance cars. Drivers of electric cars might in future even be able to select different engine sounds, and maybe download them like ringtones. Although some drivers might want to cruise in an electric car thundering to the sound of a mighty V8 engine, it is not necessary-and traffic police may have something to say about it. Synthesised engine noises could even help reduce noise pollution, says Mr Peachey. For instance, sound from the speakers at the front of an electric car (or the rear if reversing) is highly directional. This means it is more likely to be noticed by pedestrians in front or behind the vehicle. The noise from an internal combustion engine, however, radiates in many directions-including upwards into offices and bedrooms. Unique engine noises would still be possible. A sound-generator will be fitted to the Fisker Karma, a luxury plug-in electric hybrid which goes into production later this year. It will both alert pedestrians and enhance the "driver experience", says Russell Datz of Fisker, based in California. That surprise came on Friday when the Idol judge presented the visually challenged singer with a guide dog from Guide Dogs of America in Sylmar, Calif. Scott walked-or "test drove" as he joked-two of the organization's Labrador retrievers on Friday, but he won't get his dog until after the American Idol tour ends on Sept. 15. At that time, he'll get matched up with the right pooch for him and go through a 28-day training process. "We have to find a dog that really likes loud music," joked Paula. Scott, who was lured to the event under the false pretense that he was there to sing, was quite surprised to learn the truth... "Are you serious? Thank you so much," Scott told Paula at the event, which was in honor of May being National Guide Dog Month and cosponsored by Natural Balance Pet Foods and Petco. Scott is the first visually challenged contestant on American Idol. The Scottsdale, Ariz., singer isn't completely blind; he has a 2 percent field of vision and gets around with the use of a cane. On the set of Idol, his fellow contestants would walk him to and from the stage. Now, he'll have a furry friend to help him out instead. >From this link: http://ca.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b123256_paula_abdul_surpri ses_idols_scott.html _______________________________________________ nagdu mailing list nagdu at nfbnet.org http://www.nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nagdu_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for nagdu: http://www.nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nagdu_nfbnet.org/tinadt%40sbcglobal.ne t No virus found in this incoming message. Bernson Sent: Tuesday, May 12, 2009 8:29 PM To: gda-grads at yahoogroups.com Subject: Setting the record straight Hi everyone, I wanted to post on this list (and feel free to cross-post as well for me) the real story of what happened on Friday at GDA with Paula Abdul and Scott MacIntyre from American Idol fame. Your confusion is absolutely granted....the best way I can say about what happened is that it was a media "spin". Over and over I had prepped Paula to make sure that she states that the dogs that Scott will be walking with, neither one of them will be given to him - that these dogs will be "similar to one that he would get if he chose to come to GDA for the 28-day training process - AFTER he goes through the whole application process". As you have seen, the media took a much different spin, as did Paula in her delivery of the events of the day. Unfortunatly, when the media and celebrity is concerned, the end result of the article or TV spot is out of our hands, but the real end result of how/when someone receives a guide dog still remains in our control. I spoke with Scott in detail for a long time after the media left to explain to him that this turned out to be a "media blitz" and that if/when he decides to get a guide dog, we will talk again at that time. There is no way we at GDA would EVER "surprise" someone with a guide dog without going through the whole application process - no matter who they are, and I'm sorry that the media and Paula presented it in a different light. At this point, Scott's life is very busy and full, and at this stage in his life, his career is very important to him. Maybe down the road a guide dog will be next to him, but I assur you all that he will have to complete the same process as any other visually impaired person would. Again, please cross-post. Please note that I do not checkthe list frequently. So if you would like to contact me, please do so off-list. I know this lady; she is a blind high school English teacher in Lafayette, Indiana, and a superb writer, too. Regards, Susan & Rhoda Book About Service Dogs Needs Your Stories Let your voice be heard! Kathy Nimmer, a blind high school English teacher and writer from Indiana, has launched an international effort to gather true stories of people with disabilities and their service dogs, to be included in an anthology that Nimmer will seek to publish in the mass market commercial publishing industry. The project, entitled "Two Plus Four Equals One," will celebrate what happens when two hands plus four paws combine for one magical union. The web site, http://www.servicedogstories.com, has been set up to promote the project, receive prospective submissions, gather contact info from individuals who have worked with service dogs in any capacity, and field inquiries about the book. Nimmer, now working with her third guide dog, wants to hear from you. Start thinking of incidents involving you and your dogs, things that were funny, scary, surprising, disappointing, empowering, sad, or simply memorable. The book will include nonfiction stories, anecdotes, tributes, and poetry. Explanations and samples of the four genres can be found on the web site. And, you don't have to be a seasoned writer to take part! There is an interview option where Nimmer will talk with you and write something for you about your dog experiences. Submissions will be accepted for consideration through September 30, 2009. For purposes of this project, "service dogs" are any canines trained to assist people with disabilities, including those who are blind, deaf, or in wheelchairs, as well as those with other medical conditions including (but not limited to) autism, epilepsy, and muscular or balance impairments. Nimmer is hoping to hear from people with disabilities, as well as those who have raised or trained service dogs, or simply witnessed service dogs in action. If you fit into any of these categories, it is time to let your voice be heard! As members of the disability community, you are the best resources for the dissemination of information about this book that Nimmer is hoping will change public perceptions of the disabled and their working dogs, so spread the word! Guide Dogs of Texas raises, trains and provides guide dogs to visually impaired Texans to enhance their mobility and independence. It is the only guide dog school in Texas and is a member of the International Guide Dog Federation. Dolan created a downloadable application called Pocket Puppy Raiser that allows users to interact with a virtual puppy on the Apple iPhone. Users can scratch a sleeping puppy's belly until its leg shakes, pet the dog until it licks the iPhone screen or play a game of tug-of-war with the pup. Apple approved Pocket Puppy Raiser on May 7. The application costs $2.99 per download and proceeds will be split among the iPhone App Store, Dolan and Guide Dogs of Texas. Dolan, a graduate of Texas State Technical College, developed the application upon the recommendation of his mother, Michelle Pelletier, who works for Guide Dogs of Texas as a puppy raising program manager. Dolan says he plans to upgrade the Pocket Puppy Raiser to reflect the different tasks guide dogs perform as they grow older. "I'm thinking about starting the dog out as a puppy, and then as it gets bigger and becomes a guide dog it will take its owner for a walk on the street and stop at a crosswalk for traffic or for a walk to the Alamo," he says. "It will be a challenge, but I think I can do it." To download the app, go to iTunes and search "Pocket Puppy Raiser." Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is based in Cupertino, Calif. I want here to thank Brookfall water for donating the bottled water and coolers for this event. I didn't know that was going to happen until this afternoon. People of good will have been talking to me all week. The fliers that I left with a couple of key merchants along the way have been taken by eager patrons and may yet yield some results. Ever since a disastrous fall a couple months ago, Velvet hasn't been feeling well, and so I've taken on a lot of extra work in trying to make her life easier. If, in my preoccupation with making modifications to our house has caused me to overlook some details or not be as thorough as I would have liked to be, I sincerely apologize to my friends in Cagdu. In any case, I wish to thank Jackie Garcia for her help with the permit process, my reader Lisa Butler for her help with moving water bottles and equipment, and all of you for your support and forbearance in providing me with focus and encouragement when It was most needed From kenvolonte at comcast.net Sat May 16 12:52:05 2009 From: kenvolonte at comcast.net (Ken Volonte) Date: Sat, 16 May 2009 12:52:05 -0700 Subject: [Cagdu] we are back Message-ID: <252C54EE50C0469C9879A980569D93EF@ken5f734aa928e> Hi all. The day was bright and sunny as our intrepid band of marchers started off from Caldwell Park. The University would be holding graduation ceremonies all day, and as we started off, Flow Gently Sweet Afton drifted over the quad. We marched. We marched along Pacific Avenue until we came to Taste of Britani restaurant which had offered us some crepes for a snack. We entered to cheers and applause from the customers. We ate and talked for two long, and when we left, the sun's heat precluded our following the original plan of the march, so we improvised. We marched south to Harding, then crossed to the shady side of the street and turned back. We eventually joined at least one other parade going in the opposite direction. It was great fun until one of our dogs was attacked. Edison and I escaped, but the person behind me started yelling at the dog's owner for having such an ill trained suburban cur, and, well-- What are you going to do. Billy did quite well in the ensuing Malay, but people on the Avenue are going to be talking about this for a long time. I gotta go. We have water coolers to retrieve. A Springer Spaniel lunged and growled at him. What I didn't mention in that post was a potential dog fight that might have occurred in the restaurant where we were having breakfast. Billy was not nearly as close to John as he should have been. He stretched himself over to the next table and put his head on a gentleman's foot. The man responded in the only rational way he knew. He gave Billy a sausage. So now Billy had a tasty morsel of food and Edison did not. Fortunately, both dogs are well behaved, but there could have been extreme trouble. Velvet said, in a very loud voice, "no no no! Don't ever feed these guide dogs. The place went silent. Then John took up the cause. "Oh", he wined, "now she's made us out to be the bad guys. that's just swell. Why are you even here Velvet"? Now I'm going to vent here, and if some of you are offended, well, that's too bad. From time to time, I get phone calls from guide dog handlers who have been asked to leave restaurants or theaters. When I have gone with my dog, who ever that dog might be, there has been no trouble. Without exception, the incident has been triggered or worsened by handlers, usually with some sight who did not have their dogs under absolute control. In a typical case, the handler would walk into a pizza joint and see a listing of specials on the wall. They would then drop the dog's leash and harness handle and walk up to the wall where they could better see the menu items under consideration. The dog might follow them, or go over to lick a little kid usually about age three. The mother would yell, the child would scream and the manager would ask the person with the offending guide dog to leave. The second sinario has to do with control also. There are some dog handlers who never correct their dogs' bad behavior. Indeed, I have heard comments by such lax handlers as: "I don't think it's healthy she has her dog with her all the time". For the record, our dogs are supposed to be with us when we're using them. Also for the record, a barking whining growling Labridoodle isn't cute. It isn't even ok. It's just annoying. He's been scolded by dog using friends, cane using friends, puppy raisers, training staffs from more or less of three schools and many of his land lords who have seen guide dogs and know all about how they have to be under absolute control. He was once taken to task by a whole office full of patients waiting to see the Chiropractor. I know about this one, because I was asked to write a letter to the doctor explaining all the many things that went wrong that day. Note to the arts division: there are surely enough stories to make at least three books of cartoons and twelve quilts. Southeastern Guide Dogs has been contacted. Billy thinks it's funny. So do I. If you were to ask him, Sponge, the Springer Spaniel would think himself a great and mighty hero for protecting his mistress against this assortment of villainous people who disturbed an otherwise perfect breakfast. Speaking of which, I gotta go and have my perfect breakfast of Oreos and beer. ----- Original Message ----- From: "tina thomas " To: Sent: Sunday, May 17, 2009 7:39 PM Subject: Re: [Cagdu] more about the march > > Hey Ken- Sounds like you need to have this discussion with John. Here is a 20 second link to the news cast. When it happened I was just sitting at a bus stop on a bench waiting to for the bus to go home. I felt horrible and did not know what to do. I just let go of the leash and let Odette defend herself. I stayed wit the baby and made sure the dogs did not get near her. I just kept screaming for help. People started getting out of there cars on a very busy street helping. One guy kicked the pit bull so hard it lost its breath for a second which gave Odette a chance to get away and at that very second the bus pulled up and Odette just jumped right inside and so did I with a stroller and all. I felt bad because the stroller was not collapsed and the baby was still inside and I just pulled her in and dragged it up the stairs in the midst of a crowded buss. And here is my dog bloody and soaking wet. Then a lady said she knew of a vet on the bus route and help me get there. Then I had no way home and I had no cane with me. I called john who came and got me and his guide dog Jazz guided me and the baby and himself home. It was so horrifying hearing my dog crying during the attack. I don't think I can ever get that memory out of my mind. But I am so thankful that it did not turn out worse if it was not for good Samaritans and that bus coming at just the right moment. Odette was treated with medication for shock and given IV and prepared for surgery. I hope her working life will not be effected by this and she will not have to be retired. She has several bites that entered the skin but one punctured wound where she has muscle and tissue injury. The police wouldn't help saying it is an animal problem and to call the animal control officer. Well they never answered there phone and later talking to them they said they could not investigated because they did not have an actual address. Very frustrated with these departments. As of today a few days later she is not quite herself. Sleeps in the corner, doesn't always want to come when called and wants to stay in my bedroom. Her wounds got infected and we are draining and treated it with strong anti biotic. We are treating her with heat treatment on the muscle area that got hurt. it is very swollen and hard. Her whole neck is very swollen. We are also giving her pain medications. After the news coverage a witness called animal control and identified the dog. The dog is now in custody and they are now looking for the owner and investigating. Police said Todd Wills had gone for a walk with the dog, named Bruin, at about 4 a.m. Thursday. As he returned home to the 4000 block of Broadway Street, a cat inside the house attacked the dog, an 85-pound black Labrador retriever. Wills was able to move the cat to another room, but the dog ran away and hasn't been seen since. The dog was wearing a stainless steel chain collar with a rabies tag and a guide dog ID tag -- Bruin 4E60. The dog also has a tattoo in its ear that reads "4E60." Police asked anyone who finds the dog to call 317-327-3831. Todd Wills is missing his best friend, but his 85-pound black lab was more than a pet. "I just can't imagine not being with him. I'm already feeling lost," Wills said. "It's like I've lost my sight all over again." Bruin was Todd's link to life. The highly-trained, highly expensive guide dog had served as Todd's eyes for three years. "Hopefully other people will understand the difference between a pet and a guide dog. I mean, he's still kind of a pet, but he's a part of me and I'm missing a chunk of me," Wills said. Bruin disappeared early Thursday morning after getting spooked by a cat at his home on Broadway Street. "We were coming in the door and I stopped at the screen door to let him off his harness and leash so he could run in and a cat charged him. I stepped out immediately started calling him and...nothing," Wills said. Late Thursday, Wills got the news he'd feared. A police officer came to his door and said they found Bruin near the corner of 40th and College. The guide dog had been hit by a car. "They matched the collar up and he wasn't in good shape. Apparently, whoever hit him didn't feel it was important enough to stop," Wills said. Todd's companion, his source of independence, was gone, and their important bond was broken. "It just doesn't feel right to walk around without him. I find myself, you know, crying over Bruin all day and then I'm thinking that I need to get another guide dog so I can continue my independence," Wills said. But guide dogs can cost tens of thousands of dollars and require extensive training. While most of the cost is underwritten by donations, Todd says he will still have to pay several thousand dollars out-of-pocket, which is difficult since he's on disability and in school. "That makes it a challenge to put all this together," Wills said. For now, Todd is coping with loss and in need of another guide through life. The situation with her guide dog being attacked by the pit could have been worse. She had her infant daughter with her. Thank goodness for good citizens. I do think we need to work with the our local police Depts. and educate them on the laws about guide dogs being attacked. Tina "Trust your own instinct. Police spokesman Joel DeSpain said Stephen M. Bottila, 37, wanted to file a complaint with police against the manager of the McDonald's at 2402 S. Park St. because he felt his rights were being violated. DeSpain said the manager allowed Bottila to eat his food in the restaurant with the sleeping dog after Bottila told him it was a service animal, but then asked Bottila to leave. The manager called police around 8 p.m. and said he wanted to make sure the dog was a service animal and that he wanted Bottila removed from the restaurant, DeSpain said. DeSpain said officers attempted to get Bottila to leave and discuss his complaint with them outside the restaurant, but Bottila refused, then fought with three officers who tried to physically remove him. Bottila was being held Wednesday in Dane County Jail on tentative charges of trespassing, resisting police and disorderly conduct. His dog was taken to the Dane County Humane Society. Bottila has told the State Journal he has a seizure disorder for which his dog provides assistance, and he has previously had problems with employees of other businesses in the city and town of Madison recognizing his dog as a service animal, prompting training for officers in the town of Madison on the Americans with Disabilities Act. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, representatives of a business may ask if an animal is a service animal or what tasks the animal has been trained to perform, but they cannot require special identification cards for the animal, or ask about a person's disability. Cynthia Wick of the city's Department of Civil Rights said Bottila filed a public accommodation complaint against Einstein Brothers Bagels in September 2007 for refusing access to a service animal. An investigator found probable cause to believe that discrimination on the basis of disability occurred, but a hearing on the matter never took place, Wick said. Additional information on the case was not immediately available. Madison Police Capt. Carl Gloede on Thursday denied a State Journal request for police reports of Tuesday's incident, saying it remained an active investigation requiring follow-up by district command staff, who review all arrests. Fred http://www.madison.com/tct/mad/latest/452745 Snoozing 'service dog' sleeps through owner's Tasering, arrest The Capital Times ? 5/27/2009 12:42 pm A Madison man was Tasered, pepper sprayed and subdued by three police officers at a McDonald's restaurant after refusing to leave when a manager questioned him about his sleeping dog, which he said was a service dog. Stephen Bottila, 37, was tentatively charged with trespassing, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct following his arrest Tuesday night at about 8 p.m. in McDonald's, 2402 S. Park St. Bottila apparently took his dog into the restaurant and was asked by the manager if the dog was a service dog, because if not, the dog wouldn't be allowed inside. "The patron (Bottila) said it was a service dog but didn't say anything else," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "The manager let the man eat his meal while the dog slept under the table." DeSpain said the Americans With Disabilities act allows business owners or managers to ask customers if an animal brought into a business is a service animal, or what kind of tasks the animal has been trained to perform, but can't ask about any special identification cards for the animal, or about the person's disability. Bottila apparently felt his rights were violated when the manager asked about the dog. "He wanted to press charges, but an officer explained the manager didn't do anything wrong and the dog had nothing readily identifiable on him to indicate it was a service dog," DeSpain said. "The manager just wanted to make sure people weren't bringing non-service dogs into the restaurant." Bottila refused to leave the restaurant and a scuffle ensued. "He fought with three officers while being arrested," DeSpain said. "Pepper spray and an electronic control device were used to get him under control." While Bottila was hauled off to jail, the dog was taken to the Dane County Humane Society. DeSpain said the dog slept through the whole thing.
