Hope the convention was a wopdoliger, as Dr. Jernigan was wont to say. Well, on to business. John Vandervort and Billy are being heard again in Stockton small clames court on the 13th. I'll not be in the court room this time, as I don't think it helps John's case to see a guide dog right next to Billy. In any case, I'm glad that the case is being reheard, as the judge was, to say the least, incurious. He didn't care about John's lost earnings, nor that Billy was a service animal attacked while in performance of his duties. This doesn't have to do with Billy's case, but I'll ask it anyway. What would have happened if the attack were on a police canine unit type dog? Bang! That's what and no questions asked. We've got a situation in which guide dog puppies are not being allowed into schools for their year's worth of socialization. Are the puppies afforded the same protection under the law as guide dogs are? It seems as though they should be. As things stand now, the dogs are put in kennels for 6 hours a day while the raisers are at school. This is nuts! GDB says the puppies are not entitled to any protection at all. If that's the case, then what's the point? Yes, the puppies are not given the same rights as trained guides. If a business wants to tell the puppy raiser, that they do not want it in they have that right. I have not seen this take place in a long time, but it can and there is nothing that a puppy raiser can do. A long time ago, the MTA in Los Angeles wouldn't let puppy raisers bring the dog on the bus, but after many hours of explaining how it can benefit, there is not an issue now. You might want to consider a resolution about this, so that the NFBC can work to change this. There is a situation in the Manteca school district in which at least four high school students and a teacher have been denied permission to bring their puppies to school. It didn't use to be that way, but some idiot teacher brought his pet dog to school and it bit someone. It is important that puppies be allowed in schools for their own socialization. What good does it do for a puppy to spend six hours a day in a crate or kennel away from people and activities? Guide dog puppies are allowed in schools in Utah, Nevada and Colorado. In fact, schools and businesses can't discriminate against puppies in training. In Nevada, it went all the way up to the state Supreme Court. How could we sit on our hands while this happened! It's not an issue from long ago, and if it was, this federation should have dealt with it head on. I'll write a resolution, but I want cagdu's word that you will support me in this. Let us take to the barricades again. Perhaps a letter to the district Superintendant with copies to all 4 of the principals of the high schools in question. This letter could articulate what the difference between guide dog puppies and pet dogs are. This letter could also spell out how vital this socialization is for a dog that will soon enough be responsible for guiding in such environments. This is particularly important as more and more schools are moving towards providing guides to blind people at younger ages (a point of contention worthy of a different discussion). I have no problem with your idea of a resolution. However, I think that immediate engagement with the school district could yield results more quickly. Its been my experience that most people just don't know any different. Often times, once educated, they can be lead to a more appropriate decision. Best- Jonathan Jonathan T.
