I finally made contact with South-eastern Guide Dogs, but was told that they couldn't send someone out to our state convention owing to the distance involved. Oh well. The reason I wanted to get someone from SGD is that what with Billy, John Vandervort's guide coming from that school, and because of Billy's being attacked, I've seen his work up close and he's just a good solid dog; one might even say fearless. That speaks well for South-eastern Guide dogs, and good luck to them. I gotta go. Message-ID: Hi all I just twittered about this. I was brainstorming about a fast way to get prizes for the virtual feast. If this works as it can we might have enough prizes to donate to the original cause transportation from sacramento for attendees and spread the remainder throughout supporting divisions and the general convention. I will post a list of prizes that I get through Swagbucks if this works. I don't expect the fundraisers to be huge but in the event they do generate more money than the project needs my suggestion would be to spread the moneys first to helping people with transportation and additional convention expenses as needed than to the general convention for door prizes maybe half of the remainder and divide the remainder should there be one with each supporting chapter division to use for their door prizes or specially assist their members as they see fit. I admittedly am dreaming big and thinking most likely smaller. Either way you can without expense add to the door prize pool at least for the virtual pizza feast. Have I got your curiosity? Go to http://mywwesearch.swagbucks.com/refer/itsmike Join and I will get 1 Swagbuck for every one you earn up-to 100 Use the search engine and look arround the swagbucks store to see what prizes they have that you would like to win and let me know. I think they give you and the prize pool that being me, each $3 before you even do one search. So whether you like the site or not we each get $3 for your try and if 50 people have $3 that's 150 swagbucks I could get three $25 restaurant.com cards with that. If52 people do that I can get three swagbucks teashirts which are pretty snazzy. Maybe we can even get Swagbucks to talk about our golden gate walk and they have lots of members! I think they are headquartered in or near San Francisco. Did I mention they also have celebrity connections? Another incintive! Do you think we could get the largest group of blind people at one time to join an unusual website! If we do I'll certainly want to publish in their blog how and why I did it! Another chance to introduce the folks of the area and arround the world to the need for blind literacy! I currently have 111 swagbucks. You can't transfer the ones you get to me so enjoy those buy yourself a teashirt, an mp3 a musical instrument baseball cards gift cards or whatever your heart desires and than get your friends to join under you that won't help me with the prizes but it will help you get a more valuable one. I will most likely buy lots of smaller prizes rather than a few big ones. I even saw keyboards and I think trumpets on there as prizes a while back and lots of autographed stuff from famous people. The best search engine to use seems to be swagbucks.com for the first hundredsearches. You can earn swagbucks other ways like by promoting their site if that interests you. Once you reach the 100 using swagbucks.com than you can do San Diego chargers.com or whatever team music artist whichever you like. Want more information? Write me off list. If I don't get back fast in the next few days it's because I'm trying really hard to get an agency to help me start my internship hours. I have until next wednesday or I will have to take the field work course at a later date. I just found out Monday and started working on this project. I really need some catch up mobility which maybe paratransit will provide but I don't know when. VR hasn't transferred my records so it's really hard to get the full assistance of a vr counselor I need, mine is on vacation last I heard and he's in Lancaster so I have to just wing it and let go and let God. A cane gave him only limited security. Then, a few years later, he visited The Seeing Eye in Morris Township. He clasped his thin fingers around a leather harness, slung over a yellow Lab, and for the first time he said he walked without fear. Robert Sciarrino/The Star-Ledger Ralph Malatesta, a trainer with The Seeing Eye, works Pluto, a young German shepherd, through the early stages of his training in downtown Morristown. "It was like I had grown wings," Kornman recalled. "I was feeling freedom, and moving so swiftly and safely, and confidently." Last week, Kornman joined Trisha Ebel of Secaucus whose Golden Retriever Rainey also helped restore her confidence, Vincent Chaney of Old Bridge, whose dog, Shaeffer, saved him from a speeding taxi in New York City, and some 200 other graduates of The Seeing Eye, the world's oldest guide dog school for the blind and visually impaired in the United States and Canada. They gathered on the organization's campus to celebrate the group's 80th anniversary. Every year, nearly 300 students attend The Seeing Eye to learn how to bond with a guide dog. Over its 80 years, the organization has served about 8,000 people, said Teresa Davenport, the organization's director of communications. About 500 puppies are born each year at the school's Breeding Station in Chester Township. It costs tens of thousands of dollars to match just one person with a dog, yet the school relies solely on donations, Davenport said. The school sits on Morris Township's rolling green hills, and students are frequently seen walking with their dogs and with instructors in nearby Morristown. During the three-day reunion, the graduates attended banquets, workshops and toured Morristown. On Thursday, Mike May stood in front of the statue of the organization's co-founder Morris Frank with his Lab-golden cross, Miguel. May, who traveled from Sacramento, Calif. for the reunion, invented a GPS device designed for the blind and visually impaired. "I came here with my wife, and she couldn't find the statue at first. I had to tell her, "Honey, it's straight ahead,' " he laughed. "It's been a huge part of my mobility equation. I am out and about because of (The Seeing Eye)," May said. Frank started The Seeing Eye in 1929, after he was inspired by a 1927 article by well-known dog breeder and philanthropist Dorothy Harrison Eustis about guide dogs assisting blind World War I veterans. Frank moved to Morris County from Nashville, Tenn. in 1931. "It was the beginning of the Great Depression, and here we are, 80 years later, and The Seeing Eye is still going strong," said Pete Lang, former Seeing Eye instruction and training manager. "It is the leading guide dog school in the world," said Marion Gwizdala, president of the Tampa, Fla.-based National Association of Guide Dog Users. He said the school has for years set a standard for dog guide schools. There are about a dozen in the nation, and 72 worldwide accredited by the International Dog Guide Federation. The secret of The Seeing Eye's success is its ability to successfully bond a person with a dog. The two must communicate constantly, even their personalities must blend. "His purpose in life is to be with me," said Kornman, moments after giving a command to his black Lab, Mojo. "Good boy, left," he says softly to the dog. Mojo gently tugs Kornman toward a flight of stairs. Mojo stops before the first step -- the signal that stairs loom. "The fear is gone because I know no matter what happens, I'm going to be okay," he said. Kornman, the organization's outreach specialist, travels often and therefore needs a dog that can handle crowds and loves airplanes. Mojo fits perfectly under a plane seat. Without the dog, Kornman's guidance would come from a cane, an option he said he was glad to be rid of. "When I wasn't using a cane, people didn't know if I was stupid, if I was rude, or drunk," Kornman said. Now, he walks with a strut in his quick step. A guide dog avoids all obstacles and moving vehicles, and walks around puddles. Mojo stops at every door, and turns to face it so Kornman can find the doorknob. "I am truly living a life today I never imagined with vision loss," Kornman said. Many of the graduates who returned to The Seeing Eye campus this past weekend echoed those feelings. "The greatest feeling is when you put that harness on for the first time, and you are out on the street and you are in the middle of Morristown traffic, in the middle of all those cars," said Alan Conway of Quebec, Canada. "It feels like flying." No virus found in this incoming message. By Kathryn Hawkins August 02 2009 The original Bonnie and Clyde were together until the bitter end-and, though they're not robbing any banks, the same goes for another couple named for the reckless gangsters: a pair of Border Collies. This canine couple was discovered wandering the streets of Norfolk, England a month ago. They wore no tags or collars, but were obviously tame: when a woman discovered the dogs running loose on the street during a rainstorm, she opened her car door, and they instantly jumped in. Because she couldn't find their owner, she took them to the Meadow Green Dog Rescue center, where the staff and volunteers could help them find a new home. The Meadow Green Dog staff soon realized that these were no ordinary dogs although they both seemed fully functional when they were together, Clyde was lost without Bonnie-literally. As it turned out, the five-year-old dog was completely blind, and relied upon two-year-old Bonnie to be his own seeing eye dog. "If Clyde's unsure where he is he will suddenly go behind her and put his face on her back so she can guide him where he is going," the center's Cherie Cootes told The Telegraph. "He totally relies on her the whole time. When she walks she tends to stop and make sure he's there - she does look out for him." In the initial article about Bonnie and Clyde in The Telegraph, Cootes stressed that the dogs would need to be homed together. Such special requests can be challenging to fill for any bonded pair of animals, but particularly for a disabled dog like Clyde. She wasn't sure whether anyone would be willing to make the commitment to care for the special pair. But Cootes' worries were unfounded: after the article's publication, more than 500 people called the Meadow Green Dog center, offering to take in Bonnie and Clyde. The two dogs have now been adopted by an animal lover who has a large home in the country, providing ample space for the pair of Collies to run around and play together. It's a perfect solution for the canine couple, whose story is one of a kind. While many dogs have been trained as guide dogs for human companions, Vicky Bell, a spokeswoman for Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, says that she's never heard of another case in which a dog acts as a guide for another dog. "This is a very unusual case - it's such a lovely story," she said. "Some dogs take to guiding better than others because they naturally have the right temperament. Veterinarians warn about Lepto in humans August 17, 7:55 PM Rochester Infectious Disease Examiner Charles Simmins AP Photo/Julie Jacobson People get many things from their dogs, friendship, companionship, exercise, love. Sometimes they also get sick. Leptospirosis is a bacterial illness that dogs may catch through exposure to contaminated water, rodents and rodent feces. Lepto is a bacterial family with over 200 varieties that can infect mammals from rats to cattle. In dogs, it is a very serious illness, potentially fatal. A vaccine exists but it only protects against two variants. It is treatable if caught in time. It's symptoms include "anorexia, vomiting, lethargy, depression, muscle pain and sometimes diarrhea or bloody urine". It can cause kideny and liver damage, and death. New varieties have appeared in the last several years for which there is no vaccine. As with the appearance of any new disease, it can spread rapidly in a region. Humans that work with animals are the most likely to be exposed. Veterinarians, dairy farm workers and sewer workers top that list. With the new varieties, there is increased concern about the potential for pet owners to catch Lepto. Pet owners should use proper sanitary practices around sick animals. Dog urine is especially infectious. Gloves and boots are appropriate protection. Sick dogs should not be walked in areas where children might come into contact with the dog's urine, parks, playgrounds, etc. Care should be taken to protect waterways, streams and creeks, from becoming contaminated. Lepto will make a human very ill. In humans, the symptoms are nearly the same as in a dog. Most patients will require hospitalization. Treatment includes antibiotics and a patient may also need kidney dialysis. Rapid veterinary care for a sick pet may save its life. Careful handling of animals wastes and proper disposal will help prevent the pet owner from becoming ill, as well. For more info: The Centers for Disease Control and the New York State Department of Health have information on leptospirosis. Veterinarians will also be able to provide information.. If errors are here it's the cut and paste man Me, that made them, they aren't errors in the tweets. Note also we didn't put of California in the tweets or point out this is being sponsored by the river city chapter. This isn't meant as a slight or to omit anyone but rather to save space knowing we can catch people as they come in and or clairify when they write me. Twitter has a unique writing style. Also Terra just wrote and tweeted Taylor Swift, she may not respond but we're trying. Mike Terra Peterson cinabunny1976 Attention SACRAMENTO residents!
