The Seeing Eye Celebrates Morris Frank’s 100th Birthday.

On March 23, 2008, The Seeing Eye, the nation’s first and foremost school for training dog guides, will mark the 100th birthday of its co-founder, Morris Frank.

Today 11 accredited dog guide schools, including The Seeing Eye, exist throughout the United States and Canada. “Nearly 8,000 blind and visually impaired individuals from the U.S. and Canada travel independently with dog guides,” said Seeing Eye President & CEO Jim Kutsch. “None of this would have been possible
without Morris Frank, and without his tireless commitment to promote the use and acceptance of dog guides.”

A native of Nashville, Tenn., Frank lost all his eyesight by the age of 18. At a time when opportunities for persons with vision loss were almost nonexistent, Frank was determined to lead a full and productive life. While attending Vanderbilt University, Frank’s father read an article to him from “The Saturday Evening Post” that would change his life.

The article, entitled “The Seeing Eye,” was written by Dorothy Harrison Eustis, an American ex-patriot dog breeder and trainer with little knowledge of blindness. The article described how German shepherds were being trained as guides for blinded German veterans of WWI. Frank wrote Eustis at her estate
in Switzerland imploring her to train a dog for him. In return, he would establish a school for training such dogs in the United States. This serendipitous beginning would lay the foundation for the modern dog guide movement.

In 1928 Frank, partnered with German shepherd Buddy, returned from training in Switzerland and, along with Mrs. Eustis, established The Seeing Eye the following year. Until his death in 1980, Frank continued to promote the mission of the school and advocate for the rights of blind handlers to travel freely with their dogs.

“I trust that Morris Frank’s spirit will unceasingly remind us that The Seeing Eye is, first and foremost, about the dignity and worth of blind and visually impaired people and about the capacity of the dog to assist them in leading independent and productive lives,” says Norma Krajczar, a Seeing Eye graduate
from North Carolina who was a personal friend of Frank’s.
