[Cagdu] Hotel

Hi Shannon your original hotel sounds much better. you save a dime to spend a dollar this way.
The original hotel is near transit is more user friendly but if someone could negotiate with a service group like the Lions they might be willing to shuttle folksfrom the Holiday inn back and forth to the event but you most likely wouldn't have the freedom of movement your original hotel provides.
If it costs $20 getting to and from the event your all ready back at $115.
And, with gas on the rise taxi fare will definitely go up maybe substantially by august.
Regarding the original hotel,
It sounds like you put some good thought in to picking it and the place sounds really nice.

If only ten or 15 people are coming in from out of town and it's only for a day or two if money is really an issue maybe you could work with the local chapters and have an adopt a guest day.
Well two guest for those with guide dogs.
Or I don't know this area that well but isn't OCB nearby? If they are would they be willing to rent space in the dorms for a night?I'm thingking about this idea because the Foundation for the Junior blind lets adults
 stay at camp bloomfield sometimes.
Justa few thoughts and some very untraditional out of the box ideas.
Mike

  Hi everyone:

I found a Holiday Inn Express for $95.00 per night for two doubles. It is near the Oakland Airport. There is a shuttle to and from the airport but not to and from BART. I guess you could take the shuttle to the airport and catch the shuttle from the airport to BART. It has an outdoor heated wirlpool, fitness center and business center. complimentary breakfast. It is located at 66 Airport Access Rd. The number I found this information out about is 877-600-8541. If you call there to make reservations, make sure you know the address of the hotel because that number seemed to -make reservations for multiple hotels. I am not sure how much a taxi would cost from the hotel to BART but my guess is about $10 based on what I know of the area. My knowledge of the area is that it's very much a driving area, not so much a walking area. It is also a not very good area of Oakland. So you would want to be very aware of your surroundings. But it is cheaper than $110.00 per night.

    Hi Mike,

You bring up an interesting point. Unfortunately, I’m a bit skeptical. Having organized more conferences and seminars than I care to remember, my experience has typically been that you need a substantial guaranteed number of room reservations before you can get even the smallest amount of a discount. I’ve had hotels tell me that there had to be a minimum of 65 rooms reserved before any promise of a discount.

However, I don’t want to be a nay sayer. I think that it would be short-sighted to leave any stone from being unturned. Who knows what might happen?

Hi Juliet. Maybe you could get a count of how many people will need hotel accomodations. Than aproach this hotel with the number, explain they will most likely use the onsite cafae, and offerf publicity during your seminar.

Maybe even let them have a speaker who talks about how successfully they accomodate guide dog users it reinforces what we tell the cab companies and the press sees this hotel spokesperson--an incintive for the price break = cheap advertising.

Perhaps they might give you a little price break but as you mention it has to be done fast.

Most likely they will want a deposit. The greater the volume the better the posability of a price break but not to many if they only have 110 rooms they probably want to make as much as possible and the week end is normally a higher rate.

Travel lodges are probably not that much cheaper minimum wage is higher there.

      Robert and all:

I think we need to decide fast. We don't have time to waste. I too have heard that the rooms go pretty fast, and don't forget our seminar will be during a busy time. Also, I heard that the airplane flights are going up, so we need to book those too. Other thoughts are welcomed. JC and M

I really have to agree with Shannon on this. $110 is pretty good, especially during move-in at Cal. There might be something in downtown Oakland, but you’re taking your life into your own hands on that.

I can certainly call around, but $110.00 is a good price for the Bay Area. Especially given the time of year we're having our seminar because all the parents will be overrunning the area with their new college kids. The rooms get filled no matter what the price. I saw a Travel Lodge listed, though. They're usually less expensive. I'll let you know.
