I would like to also tell everyone that Juliet warmed me that our work has just begun. In President Cody's own words, " This is going to be a killer seminar, the best ever!". Now for the message: We have been using a conference call number from the Society, but many of the chapter boards, divisions and the affiliate are beginning to need a conference call number. I felt that we are starting to use the Society's number all to often. So, I have obtained a conference call number specifically for the affiliate. I am going to block CAGDU in the calendar every month for our meeting. The call in number that we will want to use this Sunday, is: 616-347-8400 and the code is 184220 followed by the pound sign . It is right near Center and Shattuck BART. Not even a block away from BART. It's called the French Hotel (they've changed the name so we were driving around last night trying to make sure it was still a cute little hotel). It is located at 1538 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, CA 94709. It costs $110.00 per night plus tax. The phone number is 510-548-9930. It is right next to a Bank of America and right across from the post office. It is surrounded by restaurants of all kinds. There is a cafe in the lobby with cofee and pastries. But it is a very walkable area and some of my favorite restaurants are right there. And, most importantly it is close to BART, so getting to and from the Lions Center and the airport or Amtrak will be a breeze. You should make reservations very soon, though, because our August 23 date is right in the middle of parents bringing their beloved children to Cal, so all rooms book up quickly. Maybe you could get a count of how many people will need hotel accomodations. Than aproach this hotel with the number, explain they will most likely use the onsite cafae, and offerf publicity during your seminar. Maybe even let them have a speaker who talks about how successfully they accomodate guide dog users it reinforces what we tell the cab companies and the press sees this hotel spokesperson--an incintive for the price break = cheap advertising. Perhaps they might give you a little price break but as you mention it has to be done fast. Most likely they will want a deposit. The greater the volume the better the posability of a price break but not to many if they only have 110 rooms they probably want to make as much as possible and the week end is normally a higher rate. Travel lodges are probably not that much cheaper minimum wage is higher there. This plan is designed to make the streets and walk ways of San Francisco friendly to all. Here is a quote from the Better Streets Plan website. "The Better Streets Plan will create a unified set of standards, guidelines, and implementation strategies to govern how the City designs , builds, and maintains its pedestrian environment. The Better Streets Plan process brings together staff of multiple City agencies to comprehensively plan for streets. The Plan will seek to balance the needs of all street users, with a particular focus on the pedestrian environment and how streets can be used as public space. The Plan will reflect the understanding that the pedestrian environment is about much more than just transportation - that streets serve a multitude of social, recreational and ecological needs that must be considered when deciding on the most appropriate design." I sincerely encourage everyone that lives or visits San Francisco to visit the link to the SF Better Streets Plan. They are requesting feed back on this plan from stakeholders. I sincerely encourage all to provide constructive feedback on this plan. Constructive feedback has real potential to be incorporated as this plan moves forward. It is near the Oakland Airport. There is a shuttle to and from the airport but not to and from BART. I guess you could take the shuttle to the airport and catch the shuttle from the airport to BART. It has an outdoor heated wirlpool, fitness center and business center. complimentary breakfast. It is located at 66 Airport Access Rd. The number I found this information out about is 877-600-8541. If you call there to make reservations, make sure you know the address of the hotel because that number seemed to -make reservations for multiple hotels. I am not sure how much a taxi would cost from the hotel to BART but my guess is about $10 based on what I know of the area. My knowledge of the area is that it's very much a driving area, not so much a walking area. It is also a not very good area of Oakland. So you would want to be very aware of your surroundings. But it is cheaper than $110.00 per night. SHANNON L. Also I am concerned about the area of this hotel. I really don't want to work my dog in an unsafe neighborhood that I'm not familiar with. My personal choice is to stay at the hotel in Berkley where I can travel freely wit my dog. Also how many people does the hotel allow to stay in the room for the price of $110.00? I'm thinking that we could put three or four people in A room and that would save money. JMO Tina From: cagdu-bounces at nfbcal.org [mailto:cagdu-bounces at nfbcal.org] On Behalf Of Shannon L. SHANNON L. Perhaps they might give you a little price break but as you mention it has to be done fast. Most likely they will want a deposit. The greater the volume the better the posability of a price break but not to many if they only have 110 rooms they probably want to make as much as possible and the week end is normally a higher rate. The original hotel is near transit is more user friendly but if someone could negotiate with a service group like the Lions they might be willing to shuttle folksfrom the Holiday inn back and forth to the event but you most likely wouldn't have the freedom of movement your original hotel provides. If it costs $20 getting to and from the event your all ready back at $115. And, with gas on the rise taxi fare will definitely go up maybe substantially by august. Regarding the original hotel, It sounds like you put some good thought in to picking it and the place sounds really nice. If only ten or 15 people are coming in from out of town and it's only for a day or two if money is really an issue maybe you could work with the local chapters and have an adopt a guest day. Well two guest for those with guide dogs. Or I don't know this area that well but isn't OCB nearby? If they are would they be willing to rent space in the dorms for a night?I'm thingking about this idea because the Foundation for the Junior blind lets adults stay at camp bloomfield sometimes. Justa few thoughts and some very untraditional out of the box ideas. Mike ----- Original Message ----- From: Shannon L. SHANNON L. I?ve had hotels tell me that there had to be a minimum of 65 rooms reserved before any promise of a discount. However, I don?t want to be a nay sayer. SHANNON L. Unfortunately, I?m a bit skeptical. Having organized more conferences and seminars than I care to remember, my experience has typically been that you need a substantial guaranteed number of room reservations before you can get even the smallest amount of a discount. I?ve had hotels tell me that there had to be a minimum of 65 rooms reserved before any promise of a discount. However, I don?t want to be a nay sayer. I think that it would be short-sighted to leave any stone from being unturned. Who knows what might happen? Jonathan T. The raid and seizure at the Joliet, Illinois facility, which serves Petco stores in 16 states, came one day after Patrick Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, filed a civil lawsuit against Petco and obtained a warrant to make the seizures. A spokesman for Petco, based in San Diego, California, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. According to the complaint, an inspection of the facility by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April found evidence of rodent and bird infestation. Although the FDA warned Petco management in late April of their findings, a follow-up inspection in May found continuing evidence of widespread rodent and bird infestation, according to the complaint. "Investigators at the May inspection continued to see live and dead rodents and birds on or around the food containers, some of which had been gnawed and defiled by excrement," according to a government statement. The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act permits the seizure and condemnation of food, including animal food, that has been adulterated or held for sale under conditions where it might have been contaminated. The suit seeks permission to destroy any contaminated animal food stored in the Joliet facility, which supplies the company's stores in Illinois, Alabama, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.
