From tinadt at sbcglobal.net Thu Jan 3 19:26:44 2008 From: tinadt at sbcglobal.net (tina thomas ) Date: Thu, 3 Jan 2008 19:26:44 -0800 Subject: [Cagdu] FW: A guide dog's new years resolutions. Message-ID: <200801040326.m043QtIj028922@lothlorien.nfbcal.org> Subject: A guide dog's new years resolutions. From: Jenine Stanley. A Guide Dogs New Year's Resolutions In 2008, I resolve to be more patient with my human about the whole food issue. She is convinced dogs cannot tell time. This is definitely a hurdle to overcome, but I will resist the temptation to shove my nose under her arm while she is banging away at that computer or making the human breakfast or some other inane task having nothing to do with feeding a dog. I will resist the temptation to pull her down the street from the bus stop to our house at light speed, simply because a meal awaits me at journey's end. Despite not knowing when I may next be fed, I will resist the temptation to reach subtly for a morsel of food left unattended. All to better myself during the coming year. In 2008, I resolve to conquer my anger and passive aggression toward my human. This will involve not ignoring that pole just to her right as we exit the bus. Oh, she did correct me for avoiding a seat with a bum in it on said bus and made me show it to her, but I will be the greater being and let it go in future. I will also strive not to sigh loudly and make the "F--- You" face when she corrects me in public. It is quite effective though I must be again, the greater being. In 2008, I resolve to perfect the skill of navigating a hotel fraught with other dogs wearing harnesses in the guise of guiding and blind people with long sticks. I will admit that my skill is already at a superior level, hence my frustration and subsequent verbal outbursts, but I shall attempt to quell this side of me in favor of telepathic powers to learn the layout of the venue before we even set foot on its grounds. I am, after all, perfectly capable of this am I not? In 2008, I resolve to be less solicitous of attention from others. Why on Earth would I even consider this? Well, it comes down to the correction. If I wish to minimize these nuisances to my dignity, I must ignore the pleas of the public, my fans and friends, for my attentions. In 2008, I resolve to seek help for my obvious issues with dirt. There has to be some 12-step program somewhere for dogs who love dirt and dirty items. I'd wager there is even a special subgroup for cat box issues. Enough said on this resolution. Finally, in 2008, I resolve to hold my human accountable for all of the resolutions I have heard her make on this New Year's Eve, especially those involving food. This may mean breaking some of my own, but as is the duty of a guide dog, I am selfless when it comes to well, guiding, my human's life path. Jenine Stanley Power Corrupts. Absolute power is actually kind of neat. -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. It has removed 288 spam emails to date. Lucky, the first ever professional guide dog working in Beijing, entered Ping Yali's life early December after being trained in Dalian, and has greatly helped the disabled athlete during her daily life. Unfortunately, Lucky, a male golden retriever weighting 40kg, is among the city's blacklist of banned dogs and is now facing difficulty getting a required license. Without a license, Lucky's presence on the street could be seen as illegal and he can be taken away by police. Ping Yali has visited her local Public Security Bureau over the crucial issue. Police officers say they are willing to help but claim a gap in the current law pertaining to guide dogs prohibits them from issuing Lucky with a proper license. Beijing banned large or ferocious dogs back in 2006 in a bid to fight rabies, forbidding keepers from taking their dogs to public places like markets, stores, commercial areas, parks, hospitals, etc. But many such places are inevitable locations for a guide dog to be at when helping his or her master. Alas Ping Yali is in a hurry. "If Lucky stays at home or hangs about for too long without going out, he will lose his ability to serve as a guide dog," the Olympic torch bearer said. "Now he barely reacts when the bus is coming, the drivers have refused him entry too many times. And whenever we go to the supermarket, he is in a low mood, as the security guard scolded him loudly last time." Ping Yali said. Ping Yali wrote done her worries on her blog, receiving attention and support from many netizens. Many called for a new law to be set up especially for guide dogs while expressing pity for Ping and Lucky's situation. "Without a license, Lucky can only stay at home and probably lose his sense of orientation, so how can I still take her to the Olympic Games?" Ping Yali said, mentioning her plan to take part in the Olympic torch relay in 2008. The Organizing Committee for the Beijing Olympic Games announced on December 28 that guide dogs in aid of the disabled could enter Beijing's public places during the Beijing Olympic Games. But Ping Yali is worrying whether or not she and Lucky can still go out on the street after the Olympic Games. If not, she will have to send Lucky back to Dalian. This accident was the fault of another driver who lost control of his vehicle and hit the puppy truck. Denny Epperson, who was driving at the time, did an excellent job in keeping the puppy truck upright and minimizing the accident as much as possible. Sadly, one of the five adult dogs traveling was killed during the accident. She was a retired guide who was returning to her puppy raisers for adoption. The four other adult dogs, including Denny's active puppy that he is currently raising, and the 18 puppies aboard were not seriously injured. The driver's side of the truck took the direct impact, and Denny was taken to UC Davis for treatment. His injuries are serious, but not considered life-threatening. He is scheduled for surgery today, to mend his pelvis and leg. The doctors expect a full recovery. Lee Shenk was the passenger and was not seriously injured. Lee remained calm and took care of the dogs until they were transported by staff back to campus Friday evening. We are deeply saddened by the loss of the retired guide. And we are deeply grateful to Denny and Lee, who performed amazingly well in a frightening and emotional situation, and who are continuing to conduct themselves with strength and courage. We have spent the weekend ensuring that all of our constituents who had an adult dog on the truck were informed, and that Denny's family had the opportunity to travel to his location. We also want to acknowledge all of the staff from many different departments who worked together on Friday and made sure that all of the necessary phone calls were made, the dogs and Lee were transported back to campus and taken care of and who supported them and each other. I got Edison yesterday and went on two routes with him. He's a great worker. His curb work is especially accurate. Two days with him and he's already off leash. I've talked to his puppy raisers. They're an older couple living in Carson City. Today we worked down to my favorite restaurant down the street. Emily told me stuff about how the streets would look to a dog in terms of complexity. She said that not many guide dogs from any school could do this route. Edison aced it first time out. I've been in correspondence with Michel Pouliot. She has apologized for what I went through with Bryant. She also said that the instruction as to food rewards was wrong and that she and Terry Berrit were going to correct this with all of the instructors at San Raphael. We need to ask a lot more questions of San Raphael staff and administration. There are things that don't make sense to me. I'm going to alienate some people, but it's about time Shepherds were fazed out as guides. I've never met one I liked. I should say just a little more about Edison. We're already at a place in terms of his work and our smoothness as a team where other dogs were at the space of six months to a year. This guy is phenomenal in harness. Out of harness, it's like living with a not very friendly cat. He might be my best guide, but I don't see myself giving my heart to him. He doesn't play. He doesn't lick or run around the house. He doesn't act like a Lab, but it is as if all signs of dogness have been stripped out of him accept for one thing. I wasn't feeling well after this afternoon's training in the rain, so I went to bed and to sleep. I woke up to find that he was cuddled up to my back also asleep. Maybe he's just settling in. Bye for now. Ken PS I hope I'm still on this list. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thanks for that vote of confidence. I'd go anywhere with this dog and feel safe. Now we're trying to investigate why it is that GDB knowingly sends 20 percent of its graduates home with dogs that they, GDB knows will not make it in the real world. Their concern with graduating as many teams as possible borders on the immoral. How many blind people have to be injured before they once put the safety of the teams as a paramount concern. That's not where the money is now. We've got to push them, I mean really push them. There are some foodstuffs that humans relish which cause illness and death if eaten by pets. Chocolate, macadamia nuts and onions are good examples. Each of these foods contains chemicals which rarely cause problems for humans, but for dogs, these same chemicals can be deadly. list of 5 items . Chocolate toxicity . Onion and garlic poisoning . The danger of macadamia nuts . Other potential dangers . Related Products list end Chocolate toxicity Top Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. When affected by an overdose of chocolate, a dog can become excited and hyperactive. Due to the diuretic effect, it may pass large volumes of urine and it will be unusually thirsty. Vomiting and diarrhoea are also common. The effect of theobromine on the heart is the most dangerous effect. Theobromine will either increase the dog's heart rate or may cause the heart to beat irregularly. Death is quite possible, especially with exercise. After their pet has eaten a large quantity of chocolate, many pet owners assume their pet is unaffected. However, the signs of sickness may not be seen for several hours, with death following within twenty-four hours. Cocoa powder and cooking chocolate are the most toxic forms. A 10-kilogram dog can be seriously affected if it eats a quarter of a 250gm packet of cocoa powder or half of a 250gm block of cooking chocolate. These forms of chocolate contain ten times more theobromine than milk chocolate. Thus, a chocolate mud cake could be a real health risk for a small dog. Even licking a substantial part of the chocolate icing from a cake can make a dog unwell. Semi-sweet chocolate and dark chocolate are the next most dangerous forms, with milk chocolate being the least dangerous. A dog needs to eat more than a 250gm block of milk chocolate to be affected. Obviously, the smaller the dog, the less it needs to eat. Onion and garlic poisoning Top Onions and garlic are other dangerous food ingredients that cause sickness in dogs, cats and also livestock. Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger. Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet's red blood cells burst while circulating in its body. At first, pets affected by onion poisoning show gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhoea. They will show no interest in food and will be dull and weak. The red pigment from the burst blood cells appears in an affected animal's urine and it becomes breathless. The breathlessness occurs because the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body are reduced in number. The poisoning occurs a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness. Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion. A single meal of 600 to 800 grams of raw onion can be dangerous whereas a ten-kilogram dog, fed 150 grams of onion for several days, is also likely to develop anaemia. The condition improves once the dog is prevented from eating any further onion While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness. The danger of macadamia nuts Top Macadamia nuts are another concern. A recent paper written by Dr. Ross McKenzie, a Veterinary Pathologist with the Department of Primary Industries, points to the danger of raw and roasted macadamia nuts for pets. The toxic compound is unknown but the affect of macadamia nuts is to cause locomotory difficulties. Dogs develop a tremor of the skeletal muscles, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. Affected dogs are often unable to rise and are distressed, usually panting. Some affected dogs have swollen limbs and show pain when the limbs are manipulated. Dogs have been affected by eating as few as six macadamia kernels (nuts without the shell) while others had eaten approximately forty kernels. Some dogs had also been given macadamia butter. Luckily, the muscle weakness, while painful, seems to be of short duration and all dogs recovered from the toxicity. All dogs were taken to their veterinary surgeon. Be sure your pets can't get into your stash of chocolates, that food scraps are disposed of carefully to prevent onion and garlic toxicity and that your dog is prevented from picking up macadamia nuts if you have a tree in your garden. definition list of 13 items Other potential dangers Top Pear pips, the kernels of plums, peaches and apricots, apple core pips (contain cyanogenic glycosides resulting in cyanide posioning) Potato peelings and green looking potatoes Rhubarb leaves Mouldy/spoiled foods Alcohol Yeast dough Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine) Hops (used in home brewing) Tomato leaves & stems (green parts) Broccoli (in large amounts) Raisins and grapes Cigarettes, tobacco, cigars list end http://www.petalia. com.au/Templates/StoryTemplate_Process.cfm?specie=Dogs&story_no=257 ======and from another source====== Foods to Avoid Veterinary & Aquatic Services Department, Drs. Given my experience with Bryant, I resolved to not use food rewards with Edison. Yesterday, I wanted to teach him where a mail box was. "This would be a perfect job for using the clicker", Emily said; and so, armed with clicker and food pouch, we set off. Once we had come to the corner where the target was, we started the clicker game. Edison found the box as well as being able to show first hand just how insidious and evil use of food rewards can be. Emily was struck and shocked at how solicitous Edison suddenly was. On the way home, his confidence lagged, his focus of attention wasn't there. He looked back at me constantly, his pace unsure. "I don't understand this. He's never done this and he has a wet mouth. He's really drooling". Of course, I knew exactly where his lack of confidence came from. I've written this to Michel Pouliot and now, I'm writing it here. Food rewards should be used only to teach in situations in which a complex behavior is called for, such as crossing a street with a safety island, demand sequence lights and an offset unmarked flush up curb. Once the dog has the crossing down, the food should disappear forever. If you don't do this, your dog will be a circus dog, not a guide dog. Food used too liberally will change the dog's focus from you to the food pouch on your right hip. Michel and her wiz kids in R and D can say otherwise. They can say that the food pouch on your right hip is out of sight of the dog, but the dogs know where the food comes from. They're not idiots. If they were, they'd not be our guides. Can someone fill me in on the board meeting? I got word of it late and so if you could fill me in. Thanks. I'll write some words about Edison later. These dogs of ours! They're the only honest people in the place. I gotta go. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... She wanted to be the alpha. She worked well because she loves it but did'nt want me to get used to the idea that I am alpha. Maybe that's it. Food for thought. I think it's a question of Edison's just getting to know as many people as possible. He flits from person to person, and I'm just one of many. I'm also the one with the food and the lunge line and the clicker. He's just settling in. Four days into the house and he's already off leash. He finds a white rug and crashes with his nylobone and is happy. Guide work remains really good. I still have some personal issues to work out in terms of PTSD and Bryant. When Edison makes even a small mistake and I don't know what's going on, it feels like I'm right back on the streets with Bryant. But Edison is not Bryant. He is a dog possessed of confidence and an understanding of guide work. He is also a dog of great initiative. I need this and it will enable to go to places Gulliver and I could never quite understand because Gulliver was too cautious for strange places. Bye for now. Message Archive Home --> Politics --> Mike Huckabee --> Slain Dog Slain Dog Claim: The son of former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee killed a dog. Status: True. Example: [Collected via e-mail, January 2008] Can you tell me if it is true that presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's son was convicted of animal abuse? Did Mike Huckabee's son, david, really kill a dog for fun at a boy scout camp? I recently received an email which claimed that Mike Huckabee's son & another boy were expelled from a private school because they brutally killed a dog. Are you familiar with this claim? Origins: On 11 July 1998, two young men working as counselors at Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, Arkansas, killed a dog at that Boy Scout camp. One of those young men was 19-year-old Clayton Frady of Texarkana, and the other was David Huckabee, the youngest son of then- Arkansas governor (and current Republican presidential hopeful) Michael Dale "Mike" Huckabee. (David Huckabee was just two weeks shy of turning 18 at the time of the killing.) Both young men were fired over their participation in the incident. That is where the undisputed facts of the story leave off. All the rest, including why the dog was killed, how the dog was killed, and whether Governor Huckabee attempted (successfully or otherwise) to forestall investigations into his son's act, is up for grabs and may never be known. While the dog itself is consistently described as a stray that had wandered onto the property, the only other description of it comes from Marcal Young, scout executive of the Caddo Area Council that operates the camp where the animal was killed, who said it was "probably a mixed breed." As to why the dog was killed, different people say different things. Governor Huckabee said in a 2007 interview conducted by Larry King that "It was mangy. It looked like it was going to attack." The father of the other young man fired over the dog's slaying said in a 1998 news article that his son had come upon one or more Scouts who had the dog "hung over a limb and choking," so his son helped "put it out of its misery." Scout executive Young said in another 1998 news article that the two young men had told him the dog appeared ill. No one connected to any of the principals appears to want to talk about how the dog was dispatched. The only person in that group who has said anything about the details of the incident is Danny Frady, father of Clayton Frady (the other young man involved), and even then he didn't state what his son did; he said only that when his son came upon the animal, it was being hanged by others. Anonymous rumors about how the dog was killed say Frady and Huckabee hanged the dog, slit its throat, and stoned it to death. As to why the young men were fired if what they had done was put a suffering animal out of its misery or struck down a sickly animal that looked like it had been about to attack, Scout executive Young, the person who dismissed them from their jobs, said the pair were fired because they had violated a Scout law: "A Scout is kind." A December 2007 Newsweek article reported that shortly after the animal's death, the local prosecuting attorney wrote a letter to the Arkansas state police asking them to investigate the case to see if the two young men involved had violated state animal cruelty laws. The state police did not look into the matter, and no charges were filed. John Bailey, then director of Arkansas's state police, told Newsweek that people in Governor Huckabee's employ (his chief of staff and personal lawyer) leaned on him to write a letter officially denying the local prosecutor's request for an investigation. Newsweek reported that: "Bailey, a career officer who had been appointed chief by Huckabee's Democratic predecessor, said he viewed the lawyer's intervention as improper and terminated the conversation." Bailey was fired by Huckabee seven months later, with (according to Bailey) one of the reasons given by Huckabee being that "I couldn't get you to help me with my son when I had that problem." Newsweek also quoted I.C. Smith, the former FBI chief in Little Rock, as saying: "Without question, [Huckabee] was making a conscious attempt to keep the state police from investigating his son." Governor Huckabee has denied using his influence to keep police out of the matter, saying to Larry King: "Well, let me categorically say that is absolutely not true. I never used my influence. In fact, if anything, I said treat it like you would anything else. I don't want special treatment for him or against him. My son was a minor at the time. It was not a criminal issue. It was an issue that was dealt with." While there is no way to be 100% certain that a pet food is not tainted or will be recalled, there are some red flags to look for when selecting your dog's or cat's food. Avoiding these common pet food ingredients can greatly improve your odds in purchasing a healthy, safe pet food. Judging the safety or the nutritional value of a pet food starts by ignoring the advertising, the price of the pet food, and ignoring the front of the bag. The real signs to the safety of a dog food or cat food lie on the back or side of the bag or can in the 'Ingredient Listing'. Regardless of what marketing terms ('choice', 'premium', and so on) are on the front of the bag or can of pet food, a pet owner cannot determine the quality or how safe the food is unless they look at the ingredients. With dry foods there can be 90 different ingredients (or more), with canned foods there can be 50 or more different ingredients. But don't panic...you don't have to understand hundreds of different pet food ingredients! You just need to be aware of a few key ingredients...pet food ingredients that you do NOT want to see in a dog food or cat food (or treats). 'Wheat Gluten', 'Corn Gluten', or 'Rice Gluten'. These three ingredients were the bad boy pet food ingredients of 2007. Tainted glutens were found to be the cause of thousands of dogs and cats becoming ill and dying. It is not that glutens themselves are toxic to pets - these ingredients have been used in pet foods for years. The problem was the source or manufacturer of the glutens - imported from countries with far less quality standards than in the US. (The majority of glutens used in the US pet foods are from imported sources.) These imported glutens contained added chemicals that caused crystals to form in the kidneys of dogs and cats. Not only is it important to avoid dog foods and cat foods (and dog and cat treats) that contain glutens because of the possibility of dangerous added chemicals, it is important because they add no real quality nutrition to the food. Glutens are used as a thickener AND as a source of protein in pet food. Adult maintenance dog foods must provide a minimum of 18% protein, adult maintenance cat foods must provide a minimum of 26% protein. If the meat source of the pet food does not provide enough protein, glutens are often added to boost the protein level of the pet food. The best nutrition for your pet comes from a meat protein pet food not from a gluten protein. Avoid dog foods and cat foods (and treats) that contain 'corn gluten', 'wheat gluten', or 'soy gluten'. 'By Products'. By-products have never been the cause of a pet food recall, but they are definitely ingredients you want to avoid feeding your pet. To give you an understanding of by-products, I'd like to compare this pet food ingredient to pies - you know, the dessert! How many different types of pies you can think of? There are apple pies, cherry pies, chocolate pies, meringue pies, meat pies, mud pies, pie in math, cow pies (yuck!) - I think you get my point. Now imagine if you purchased yourself a prepared ravioli dinner at the grocery and you looked at the ingredients and you see 'pie' listed as the first ingredient in your dinner. Hmmm, pie in ravioli - what kind of pie? You wouldn't know if it was apple pie or mud pie or even cow pie. All you would know is that your dinner contained 'pie'. Considering 'pie' could be anything from apple pie to cow pie - my guess is that you wouldn't be having ravioli for dinner. Same thing with by-products in pet food. AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials, the organization responsible for all animal feed manufacturing rules and regulations) defines by-products as "meat by-products is the non-rendered, clean parts, other than meat, derived from slaughtered mammals. It includes, but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, partially defatted low temperature fatty tissue, and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents. It does not include hair, horns, teeth, and hoofs. It shall be suitable for use in animal food. If it bears name descriptive of its kind, it must correspond thereto." So, with respect to pet food, a by-product is a catch-all ingredient name. All left over meat materials from the human food industry are clumped into one ingredient name - by-product. There is NO certainty of what you are feeding - one batch of pet food might be more intestine by-products while the next batch of pet food might be more liver or bone by-products. There is NO way of knowing what is actually contained in the pet food ingredient by-product (the pet food manufacturers themselves couldn't tell you exactly). Avoid dog foods and cat foods (and treats) that contain By-products of any kind...Chicken By-Products, Beef By-Products, Chicken By-Product Meal, Beef By-Product Meal, and so forth. 'Meat Meal', 'Meat and Bone Meal', or 'Animal Digest'. These three ingredients are similar to by-products. AAFCO defines Meat and Bone Meal as "the rendered product from mammal tissues, including bone, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents, except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably to good processing practices." Again, a catch all ingredient name for the left-over parts of animals used for human food. No consistency to what is contained in these ingredients (all three of these pet food ingredient definitions are similar) - no way of knowing what is actually in your pet's food. Avoid dog foods, cat foods, and dog and cat treats that contain 'meat meal', 'meat and bone meal', or 'animal digest'. 'Animal Fat'. In 2002 the FDA tested many different brands of dog food (cat food was not tested) for the presence of the drug pentobarbital. Many brands of dog food tested positive to contain the drug. Pentobarbital is the drug used to euthanize dogs, cats, cattle, and horses. How can the drug that is used to euthanize animals be found in pet food? The answer - euthanized animals are rendered (cooked) and the end ingredients are placed in pet food. It has long been rumored that euthanized dogs and cats (from animal shelters and veterinarian offices) is the major source of the pentobarbital in pet food. However no one has been able to prove or disprove this rumor to date. The FDA/CVM (Center for Veterinary Management) developed testing methods on two separate occasions to determine the species source of the drug. No results have ever been determined. The pet food manufacturers adamantly deny they use rendered dogs or cats - but NO clinical evidence has ever been released to confirm the pentobarbital is from euthanized cattle and horses in pet food as they claim. However, the one thing the FDA/CVM has determined through their testing is the pet food ingredient 'animal fat' is the most common ingredient to contain pentobarbital. In other words, if you are feeding a dog food or cat food (or treats) with the ingredient 'animal fat' in the ingredient listing - you are (more than likely) feeding your pet euthanized animals. Not every batch of pet food tested that contained the ingredient 'animal fat' has proved to contain pentobarbital - but why would any pet owner want to take the chance? Avoid dog foods, cat foods, and dog and cat treats that contain the ingredient 'animal fat'. 'BHA', 'BHT', 'TBHQ', and 'Ethoxyquin'. These pet food ingredients are chemical preservatives and you might have to look through the entire ingredient list to find them. It is worth the look because there is plenty of clinical evidence to associate all four of these chemical preservatives with cancer and tumors (simply do a Google search on any one of these chemicals). All four of these chemical preservatives are rarely used to preserve human food and if so, are used in quantities far less than what is allowed in pet food. Avoid any dog food, cat food, or dog and cat treat that contains 'BHA', 'BHT', 'TBHQ', and 'Ethoxyquin' on the label. 'Corn', 'Wheat', 'Soy'. While there is no scientific evidence that proves these ingredients are dangerous to pets - they are potentially dangerous ingredients associated with recalls in the past (1995, 1999, and 2005). These grains are highly prone to a deadly mold (aflatoxin). It is suggested (by AAFCO) that all pet food manufacturers test grains for the mold, but as recalls of the past have proven - that doesn't always happen. I do not think these ingredients are as risky as others mentioned above, but they are ingredients I avoid for my own pets. There is more to selecting a true healthy pet food for your dog or cat than avoiding the above mentioned ingredients. This is just a start - based on pet food history, AAFCO ingredient definitions, science and opinion of many pet food experts including myself. There are many quality pet foods available that do NOT use the above ingredients and that add health promoting ingredients to their foods and treats.
