Good Morning,
I will add an article in our next newsletter and send you a copy.
Kevin
Hi Kevin. Thanks for responding to my email. The problem with
accessibility to restaurants is sporadic, but embarrassing when it happens.
Guide dog users carry a little card which states pertinent laws regarding
equal access, but most of the time, we can just tell the host that they
won't get into trouble with the health department and that's all it takes.
Occasionally, we will run into a restaurant owner who pointedly says, "I
don't care what the law is. You've got people with you and they can see".
You are right in your perception about guide dogs. they are quiet and most
of the time, people are surprised when we leave a restaurant and they see
our dogs for the first time.
Be that as it may, we're holding our second annual seminar in Oakland at
the Lions' Blind Center this coming Saturday from 9am--3-pm. I'll forward
our correspondence to the CAGDU list..
Most of the time, problems with access occur withVietnamees, Korean and
Indian restaurants. If you could give a heads up in your news letter, it
would be greatly appreciated by all of us. Thanks. Ken Volonte

Hi Ken,
I am rarely surprised by a request but have to admit a little surprise
with your e-mail. In my 32 years of operating restaurants prior to
taking my current position with the GGRA four years ago I never had a
single problem with a guide dog. They are quiet, well trained, and serve
a valuable function for the person with sight limitations.
Perhaps you could give me some examples of the problems your clients are
experiencing and I could think about how to address the specific issues.
The GGRA has no issues with guide dogs and no one until this e-mail has
ever approached any side of the issue. I am not comfortable trying to
present concerns over guide dogs when I have none.

The California Association of Guide Dog Users is having a
seminar on Aug. 23 at the Lions' Blind Center, 3834 Opal Street in
Oakland.
We'd like to get a speaker from GGRA to address the concerns of
restaurant
owners with regard to guide dogs. The seminar runs from 9:am--3:pm.
We'll
even give you lunch.
Since these dogs have been around for such a long time and the laws
as
to equal access are so clear, you wouldn't think that guide dog users
are
still running into problems from time to time, but we are.
If you could attend this seminar, we'd love to have you. I look
forward
to hearing from you in the next few days. You can send an email, or
contact
me by phone at 209-464-6766. Thanks.Ken Volonte, Cagdu Board
