Guiding Eyes for the Blind open school for seeing eye
dogs in Orange County

Middletown - Yorktown Heights-based Guiding Eyes for
the Blind will be opening a dog training school at
Morrison Hall at the Orange County Community College
Middletown campus.

Officials from the internationally renowned non-profit
agency and county leaders Tuesday announced the
arrangement, which will see dogs trained for guide
duty for blind or visually impaired people. The first
class will begin on October 12.

Orange County Executive Edward Diana credited college
President Dr. William Richards for taking the
opportunity to house the guiding eyes school at the
college.

Guiding Eyes breeds 500 puppies per year and puts out
150 teams of dogs and clients per year. That totals
about 6,000 Guiding Eyes teams around the world.

"We will be training volunteers how to socialize and
train puppies from about four weeks old to about 14
months old to prepare them to become Guiding Eyes
dogs," said Director of Outreach Deutsch.

Recipients of Guiding Eyes dogs pay nothing; funding
comes from corporate and private contributions.
