Thanks for your support. Do you have any of my "Me and Him" comics archived anywhere? What with my getting a new guide dog, I've got to kick some ass. Food rewards indeed! Harrumph!!!! Anyway, if you have any of these comics, please forward them on as I have to maintain continuity. Well, just as I thought we had reached a conclusion to the business of the Josh Groban concert, I was told that in yesterday's Record, there were letters about what a great concert it was. One lady was standing in line waiting to buy a ticket when a lady just gave her two tickets in the front. Those were probably the tickets that Velvet had bought in May. I wonder what Jaquie will have to say about this turn of events. I haven't been able to access the Record yet, but I will soon. They can spin it all they like. It's still access denied. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We are in Seattle for the night, but tomorrow we will go and board the ship and set sail to Alaska. This afternoon, when we landed at the Seattle airport, we needed a taxi to get to the hotel. Well, you can probably guess what happened. The driver who was first in line, did not want to take us, because of Wonder. I explained that he is a Guide Dog, and the driver was still reluctant, but thanks to the driver behind him, who said, I could take them, but you really should be doing it because it is the law. So, the driver who didn't want to take us, ended up doing so. On the way to the hotel, I found out that the reason he didn't want to take us, was because he is allergic, and was afraid that if he touched the dog for some reason, his allergies would act up. So, I told him that he wouldn't be petting Wonder and that it really would be ok because he wouldn't have any problem since he wouldn't be touching him. So after talking almost the whole way about the training and other such things about guide dogs, it turned out to be a pleasant ride and the driver was educated. Work never ends, even on vacation. As if I didn't have enough to think about what with my going back for a new dog Sunday, our car was broken into and our old cell phone and GPS were stolen. There's glass all in our driveway, and the insurance company won't even let us call a mobile glass company until we are approved by their clames department. I'm scared. We heard a voice in the night, but the police don't come out for this sort of thing. I don't know what to do. I'm just waiting for the phone call from the insurance company. This is such a nice day out too. Nobody was hurt. I'm glad for that. I can't explore the car much because there's powdered shards of glass everywhere. Bye for now. Note: This may not be for the skweemish. Service dog killed in traffic ends up at San Jose rendering plant By Linda Goldston Mercury News San Jose Mercury News It was bad enough for Richard Gambord to learn that his missing service dog was killed a short time after he crashed his van and the dog ran off. Then, he learned that the Golden Retriever's battered body had already been diposed of - mixed in with roadkill and grease at a San Jose rendering plant. "It's just so sickening," Gambord said. "They took this esteemed and loved dog and hauled him away like he was roadkill. It makes me sick." A Caltrans worker took Quinn's remains to the San Jose Tallow Company the same night he was killed - a violation of Caltrans policy, a Caltrans spokeswoman said. To Gambord of Los Gatos, and the college student who spent more than a year training him, Quinn was treated with no more respect than motorists show squashed squirrels. Brigetta Smith, public information officer for Caltrans confirmed that the dog was taken there even though it violated the department's procedure. Road crews are supposed to take the body of a dog or cat to an animal shelter so it can be scanned for an ID chip - and the owner can be notified, she said. In this case, Gambord and others searched for a week for the dog that was wearing a collar and a purple cape with the logo for Assistance Dog Institute. Based in Santa Rosa, the institute places nine to 15 assistance dogs each year and there is always a waiting list. Quinn was placed with Gambord, who has multiple scelorsis, three weeks ago, and already had helped him to take a few steps without fear of falling. "We certainly didn't want it to end this way," said Jorjan Powers, community and public relations director for the Institute. "It's just an unhappy ending no matter how you look at it." Smith said Caltrans is reviewing its procedures "to make sure this doesn't happen again." A California Highway Patrol officer who removed the dog's body from the roadway told Caltrans the dog was wearing a collar and its purple uniform. The Caltrans worker who picked up Quinn, however, said he did not see the cape or the collar. "I've asked our guys to review the agreement we have with the rendering plant to make sure they won't accept domestic animals from us," Smith said. "There should be safeguards on both ends." Gambord and Quinn were returning home from an outing on Aug. 12 when Gambord said he heard his dog choking in the back of the van. The next thing he knew he had crashed into some bushes on the Interstate 280/880 freeway interchage in San Jose. The van's door flew open and Quinn bolted out about 1 a.m. Authorities think the dog was hit by a car about an hour later. "He kept getting hit so the CHP ran a traffic break so Caltrans could pick him up," Smith said. "We picked him up about 2 a.m. right at northbound 280 to northbound 880." Smith said Caltrans used to take all dead animals it removed from roadways in the South Bay to the rendering plant, but it changed its procedure two years ago to take only wild animals. Caltrans used to have a contract with the humane society that allowed them to drop off the dead bodies of cats or dogs that had been killed on a freeway or expressway but "Caltrans chose not to renew it," said Chris Benninger, executive director of Humane Society Silicon Valley." Peggy Leyba of San Jose Tallow Company said the manager could not be reached Monday. Commonly, the dead animals taken to tallow plants are boiled down to oil that goes into a range of products, including fertilizer, soap and stock feed. "They do accept dead dogs," Leyba said but she had no information about the products produced. Powers said the staff of the institute plans to hold a memorial for Quinn, and meet to discuss what happened. "We plan to meet and see if there isn't some good that can come out of this tragedy." I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm. For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years --canine or feline attendance is not required. The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough! Chip Implants Linked to Animal Tumors - washingtonpost.com URL: http://www.washingt onpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/08/AR2007090800997_pf.html washingtonpost.com Chip Implants Linked to Animal Tumors By TODD LEWAN The Associated Press Saturday, September 8, 2007; 2:04 PM -- When the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved implanting microchips in humans, the manufacturer said it would save lives, letting doctors scan the tiny transponders to access patients' medical records almost instantly. The FDA found "reasonable assurance" the device was safe, and a sub-agency even called it one of 2005's top "innovative technologies." But neither the company nor the regulators publicly mentioned this: A series of veterinary and toxicology studies, dating to the mid-1990s, stated that chip implants had "induced" malignant tumors in some lab mice and rats. "The transponders were the cause of the tumors," said Keith Johnson, a retired toxicologic pathologist, explaining in a phone interview the findings of a 1996 study he led at the Dow Chemical Co. in Midland, Mich. Leading cancer specialists reviewed the research for The Associated Press and, while cautioning that animal test results do not necessarily apply to humans, said the findings troubled them. Some said they would not allow family members to receive implants, and all urged further research before the glass-encased transponders are widely implanted in people. To date, about 2,000 of the so-called radio frequency identification, or RFID, devices have been implanted in humans worldwide, according to VeriChip Corp. The company, which sees a target market of 45 million Americans for its medical monitoring chips, insists the devices are safe, as does its parent company, Applied Digital Solutions, of Delray Beach, Fla. "We stand by our implantable products which have been approved by the FDA and/or other U.S. regulatory authorities," Scott Silverman, VeriChip Corp. chairman and chief executive officer, said in a written response to AP questions. The company was "not aware of any studies that have resulted in malignant tumors in laboratory rats, mice and certainly not dogs or cats," but he added that millions of domestic pets have been implanted with microchips, without reports of significant problems. "In fact, for more than 15 years we have used our encapsulated glass transponders with FDA approved anti-migration caps and received no complaints regarding malignant tumors caused by our product." The FDA also stands by its approval of the technology. Did the agency know of the tumor findings before approving the chip implants? The FDA declined repeated AP requests to specify what studies it reviewed. The FDA is overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services, which, at the time of VeriChip's approval, was headed by Tommy Thompson. Two weeks after the device's approval took effect on Jan. 10, 2005, Thompson left his Cabinet post, and within five months was a board member of VeriChip Corp. and Applied Digital Solutions. He was compensated in cash and stock options. Thompson, until recently a candidate for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, says he had no personal relationship with the company as the VeriChip was being evaluated, nor did he play any role in FDA's approval process of the RFID tag. "I didn't even know VeriChip before I stepped down from the Department of Health and Human Services," he said in a telephone interview. Also making no mention of the findings on animal tumors was a June report by the ethics committee of the American Medical Association, which touted the benefits of implantable RFID devices. Had committee members reviewed the literature on cancer in chipped animals? No, said Dr. Steven Stack, an AMA board member with knowledge of the committee's review. Was the AMA aware of the studies? No, he said. ___ Published in veterinary and toxicology journals between 1996 and 2006, the studies found that lab mice and rats injected with microchips sometimes developed subcutaneous "sarcomas" _ malignant tumors, most of them encasing the implants. _ A 1998 study in Ridgefield, Conn., of 177 mice reported cancer incidence to be slightly higher than 10 percent _ a result the researchers described as "surprising." _ A 2006 study in France detected tumors in 4.1 percent of 1,260 microchipped mice. This was one of six studies in which the scientists did not set out to find microchip-induced cancer but noticed the growths incidentally. They were testing compounds on behalf of chemical and pharmaceutical companies; but they ruled out the compounds as the tumors' cause. Because researchers only noted the most obvious tumors, the French study said, "These incidences may therefore slightly underestimate the true occurrence" of cancer. _ In 1997, a study in Germany found cancers in 1 percent of 4,279 chipped mice. The tumors "are clearly due to the implanted microchips," the authors wrote. Caveats accompanied the findings. "Blind leaps from the detection of tumors to the prediction of human health risk should be avoided," one study cautioned. Also, because none of the studies had a control group of animals that did not get chips, the normal rate of tumors cannot be determined and compared to the rate with chips implanted. Still, after reviewing the research, specialists at some pre-eminent cancer institutions said the findings raised red flags. "There's no way in the world, having read this information, that I would have one of those chips implanted in my skin, or in one of my family members," said Dr. Robert Benezra, head of the Cancer Biology Genetics Program at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Before microchips are implanted on a large scale in humans, he said, testing should be done on larger animals, such as dogs or monkeys. "I mean, these are bad diseases. They are life-threatening. And given the preliminary animal data, it looks to me that there's definitely cause for concern." Dr. George Demetri, director of the Center for Sarcoma and Bone Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, agreed. Even though the tumor incidences were "reasonably small," in his view, the research underscored "certainly real risks" in RFID implants. In humans, sarcomas, which strike connective tissues, can range from the highly curable to "tumors that are incredibly aggressive and can kill people in three to six months," he said. At the Jackson Laboratory in Maine, a leader in mouse genetics research and the initiation of cancer, Dr. Oded Foreman, a forensic pathologist, also reviewed the studies at the AP's request. At first he was skeptical, suggesting that chemicals administered in some of the studies could have caused the cancers and skewed the results. But he took a different view after seeing that control mice, which received no chemicals, also developed the cancers. "That might be a little hint that something real is happening here," he said. He, too, recommended further study, using mice, dogs or non-human primates. Dr. Cheryl London, a veterinarian oncologist at Ohio State University, noted: "It's much easier to cause cancer in mice than it is in people. So it may be that what you're seeing in mice represents an exaggerated phenomenon of what may occur in people." Tens of thousands of dogs have been chipped, she said, and veterinary pathologists haven't reported outbreaks of related sarcomas in the area of the neck, where canine implants are often done. (Published reports detailing malignant tumors in two chipped dogs turned up in AP's four-month examination of research on chips and health. In one dog, the researchers said cancer appeared linked to the presence of the embedded chip; in the other, the cancer's cause was uncertain.) Nonetheless, London saw a need for a 20-year study of chipped canines "to see if you have a biological effect." Dr. Chand Khanna, a veterinary oncologist at the National Cancer Institute, also backed such a study, saying current evidence "does suggest some reason to be concerned about tumor formations." Meanwhile, the animal study findings should be disclosed to anyone considering a chip implant, the cancer specialists agreed. To date, however, that hasn't happened. ___ The product that VeriChip Corp. won approval for use in humans is an electronic capsule the size of two grains of rice. Generally, it is implanted with a syringe into an anesthetized portion of the upper arm. When prompted by an electromagnetic scanner, the chip transmits a unique code. With the code, hospital staff can go on the Internet and access a patient's medical profile that is maintained in a database by VeriChip Corp. for an annual fee. VeriChip Corp., whose parent company has been marketing radio tags for animals for more than a decade, sees an initial market of diabetics and people with heart conditions or Alzheimer's disease, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The company is spending millions to assemble a national network of hospitals equipped to scan chipped patients. But in its SEC filings, product labels and press releases, VeriChip Corp. has not mentioned the existence of research linking embedded transponders to tumors in test animals. When the FDA approved the device, it noted some Verichip risks: The capsules could migrate around the body, making them difficult to extract; they might interfere with defibrillators, or be incompatible with MRI scans, causing burns. While also warning that the chips could cause "adverse tissue reaction," FDA made no reference to malignant growths in animal studies. Did the agency review literature on microchip implants and animal cancer? Dr. Katherine Albrecht, a privacy advocate and RFID expert, asked shortly after VeriChip's approval what evidence the agency had reviewed. When FDA declined to provide information, she filed a Freedom of Information Act request. More than a year later, she received a letter stating there were no documents matching her request. "The public relies on the FDA to evaluate all the data and make sure the devices it approves are safe," she says, "but if they're not doing that, who's covering our backs?" Late last year, Albrecht unearthed at the Harvard medical library three studies noting cancerous tumors in some chipped mice and rats, plus a reference in another study to a chipped dog with a tumor. She forwarded them to the AP, which subsequently found three additional mice studies with similar findings, plus another report of a chipped dog with a tumor. Asked if it had taken these studies into account, the FDA said VeriChip documents were being kept confidential to protect trade secrets. After AP filed a FOIA request, the FDA made available for a phone interview Anthony Watson, who was in charge of the VeriChip approval process. "At the time we reviewed this, I don't remember seeing anything like that," he said of animal studies linking microchips to cancer. A literature search "didn't turn up anything that would be of concern." In general, Watson said, companies are expected to provide safety-and-effectiveness data during the approval process, "even if it's adverse information." Watson added: "The few articles from the literature that did discuss adverse tissue reactions similar to those in the articles you provided, describe the responses as foreign body reactions that are typical of other implantable devices. The balance of the data provided in the submission supported approval of the device." Another implantable device could be a pacemaker, and indeed, tumors have in some cases attached to foreign bodies inside humans. But Dr. Neil Lipman, director of the Research Animal Resource Center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, said it's not the same. The microchip isn't like a pacemaker that's vital to keeping someone alive, he added, "so at this stage, the payoff doesn't justify the risks." Silverman, VeriChip Corp.'s chief executive, disagreed. "Each month pet microchips reunite over 8,000 dogs and cats with their owners," he said. "We believe the VeriMed Patient Identification System will provide similar positive benefits for at-risk patients who are unable to communicate for themselves in an emergency." ___ And what of former HHS secretary Thompson? When asked what role, if any, he played in VeriChip's approval, Thompson replied: "I had nothing to do with it. And if you look back at my record, you will find that there has never been any improprieties whatsoever." FDA's Watson said: "I have no recollection of him being involved in it at all." VeriChip Corp. declined comment. Thompson vigorously campaigned for electronic medical records and healthcare technology both as governor of Wisconsin and at HHS. While in President Bush's Cabinet, he formed a "medical innovation" task force that worked to partner FDA with companies developing medical information technologies. At a "Medical Innovation Summit" on Oct. 20, 2004, Lester Crawford, the FDA's acting commissioner, thanked the secretary for getting the agency "deeply involved in the use of new information technology to help prevent medication error." One notable example he cited: "the implantable chips and scanners of the VeriChip system our agency approved last week." After leaving the Cabinet and joining the company board, Thompson received options on 166,667 shares of VeriChip Corp. stock, and options on an additional 100,000 shares of stock from its parent company, Applied Digital Solutions, according to SEC records. He also received $40,000 in cash in 2005 and again in 2006, the filings show. The Project on Government Oversight called Thompson's actions "unacceptable" even though they did not violate what the independent watchdog group calls weak conflict-of-interest laws. "A decade ago, people would be embarrassed to cash in on their government connections. But now it's like the Wild West," said the group's executive director, Danielle Brian. Thompson is a partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, a Washington law firm that was paid $1.2 million for legal services it provided the chip maker in 2005 and 2006, according to SEC filings. He stepped down as a VeriChip Corp. director in March to seek the GOP presidential nomination, and records show that the company gave his campaign $7,400 before he bowed out of the race in August. In a TV interview while still on the board, Thompson was explaining the benefits _ and the ease _ of being chipped when an interviewer interrupted: "I'm sorry, sir. Did you just say you would get one implanted in your arm?" "Absolutely," Thompson replied. "Without a doubt." "No concerns at all?" "No." But to date, Thompson has yet to be chipped himself. ___ On the Web: http://www.verichip corp.com http://www.antichip s.com http://www.fda. gov/cdrh/ C 2007 The Associated Press __________________________________________________________ Be a better Globetrotter. Home Education Magazine, September 15, 2007 To access the many links in this article: http://www.homeedma g.com/blogs/resources/?p=409 ----------------- Service Animals The Service Animal Registry of America offers the following definition of service animals: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service animal as any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability. If they meet this definition, animals are considered service animals under the ADA regardless of whether they have been licensed or certified by a state or local government. Service animals perform some of the functions and tasks that the individual with a disability cannot perform for him or herself. "Seeing eye dogs" are one type of service animal, used by some individuals who are blind. This is the type of service animal with which most people are familiar. However, there are many different kinds of service animals that assist persons with many other kinds of disabilities in their day-to-day activities. A few examples include: o Alerting persons with hearing impairments to sounds. o Pulling wheelchairs or carrying and picking up things for persons with mobility impairments. o Assisting persons with mobility impairments with balance. o Alerting persons with seizures. o Condition signal assistance I have known a few families who have volunteered to raise dogs that assist individuals with disabilities and I've seen how much of a help and a friend these animals are to those they are helping and caring for. For those who are interested in possibly volunteering to train a canine companion for the purpose of helping others, here are a few links: Canine Companions For Independence - Their mission statement reads - "Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships". Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind This site offers many resources, but here is a page dedicated to Dog Guide Etiquette: Dogs for the Deaf, Inc. Their website describes what hearing dogs can do: Our Hearing Dogs spend four to six months in training learning how to alert people to sounds in their environment. We train our Hearing Dogs to alert people to seven sounds: fire and smoke alarms, the telephone, oven timer, alarm clock, doorbell/door knock, and name call (and sometimes the baby cry). Many people go on to teach their Hearing Dogs to alert them to more sounds. Hearing Dogs can be taught to alert people to any repetitive sound that can be set up and practiced regularly. If a sound is inconsistent or too difficult to set up and practice, it is hard for the dog to learn to work it. Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans Check out the graduation photo of this group of dogs here. Eye Dog Foundation for the Blind, Inc. This site explains how you can raise a puppy to be a guide dog. Guide Dog's of America offers a helpful F.A.Q. Dogs are not the only animals that assist individuals. Miniature horses are also trained to be assistants. >From the The Guide Horse Program: The Guide Horse Foundation was founded in 1999 as an experimental program to access the abilities of miniature horses as assistance animals. There is a critical shortage of guide animals for the blind and guide horses are an appropriate assistance animal for thousands of visually impaired people in the USA. In early experiments, Guide Horses have shown great promise as a mobility option, and people who have tried Guide Horses report that the Guide Horses perform exceptionally well at keeping their person safe. These friendly horses provide an experimental alternative mobility option for blind people. People who have tried Guide Horses report that the horses demonstrate excellent judgment and are not easily distracted by crowds and people. Guide horses are not for everyone, but there is a strong demand for Guide Horses among blind horse lovers, those who are allergic to dogs, and those who want a guide animal with a longer lifespan. Monkeys are also able assistants. Here you can watch a movie of a monkey named Gizmo, who helps his friend, George. Gizmo is trained by Helping Hands. They currently have 60 monkeys place all over the United States. -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. It has removed 188 spam emails to date. For most of us, what we know about Africa is what we've learned from other sources. For Guide Dog Foundation graduate Joni Owen, the Africa she knows is what she's observed first hand: Owen lived in Kenya for several months helping to program satellites for cellular communications. Owen was a culinary arts and computer science major in school, planning to be a professional chef, when, in 2004, as a result of toxic optic neuritis, she suffered sudden onset blindness. But this active 26-year-old wasn't about to let her vision loss stop her from living her life. "I always knew I would get a guide dog," she says, "because I couldn't go the speed I wanted to go with a cane." She got her guide, a Labrador/Poodle cross she calls Jelly, in 2005. "She keeps up with me," Owen laughs. "She's hyper." After she lost her sight, Owen decided that it would be difficult working in a professional kitchen, so she went back to back to school for her master's degree in computer science. The urban training Guide Dog Foundation guide dogs undergo was very important because she knew she would be taking mass transit and working in a busy downtown area; she never thought she'd make use of her guide's rural training. But shortly after she received her master's, she interviewed with AT&T and was offered a job to work in Kenya programming satellites. A Different World Although she was in "complete shock" when she got to the East African nation, Owen enthuses, "Kenya was crazy and fantastic, everything you'd think Kenya could be." Jelly loved it too. "There were only three cars [in Kwakamba, the town she lived in] and no traffic," Owen recalls. But with goats and cows all around, "I had to call the Foundation to learn how to deal with goat distractions," she laughs. Jelly eventually became friends with a neighborhood goat. Owen and her co-workers rented a house on a local farm, where they had electricity for just eight hours a day and had to make do with only three liters of water each for everything - drinking, washing, bathing. Luckily, because of Jelly, Owen got additional water. To get to their "office" - a shack with no walls and a tin ceiling - the employees had to walk quite a distance, and because of the heat, they could only put in five or six hours before heading home. The heat didn't bother Jelly, though, who learned shortcuts on paths that were "just wide enough," for the two of them. Having the dog in Kenya was a challenge. "People were terrified," Owen says, "because in Kenya, dogs are not pets." There are no access laws similar to the Americans with Disabilities Act, so there were many occasions when Owen could not bring her guide when they went sightseeing or shopping. Reaching Out to Blind Students Volunteer work was part of their responsibilities while in Kenya, and in the afternoons, Owen volunteered at a local school where she learned there were 14 blind students integrated with the regular class. "I got to introduce Braille and taught them how to get around on their own using canes," she says. Two girls in particular became her shadows. They were totally blind, she recalls, and "I fell in love with them." Their parents opened their home to Owen because they wanted a good role model for their daughters, to show that being blind didn't mean being limited. Owen became so close to the girls' parents that she promised that should anything happen to them, she would take care of the girls. New Responsibilities Kenya is a relatively stable country in East Africa, but even so, Owen and her co-workers still needed to go everywhere with "askari" - armed guards - because of the general political unrest in the region. "We always had guards," she recalls. Unfortunately, the family from whom they were renting their house was threatened, and then their belongings were stolen, so the next day, Owen and Jelly and her remaining colleagues left the country for home. Owen had already planned to maintain her connection to Kenya by sending supplies back to the blind school, but shortly after she returned to Chicago, she learned that the two little girls to whom she had grown so attached had been orphaned after their parents were killed in a fire. The girls have come to live with her, and Owen is taking on new responsibilities as a single mother. She is tutoring them in English, and they are starting orientation and mobility training; they have already learned the Braille alphabet. She is lucky, Owen reflects, that she has a great support system. Her father lives nearby, and volunteers from her church have already stepped in to help. Although the Kenyan courts formalized Owen's adoption of the girls pretty quickly, she had to wait for the paperwork to wend its way through the U.S. legal system. In July, what she had been waiting for happened: the adoption was finalized. Owen is on leave and has transferred to another position in her company that will cut down on her traveling. Even when she does have to travel, she plans to take her new daughters with her. "I want them to realize their full potential." With Joni Owen as their mother, they're off to a good start. Checked out on Snopes- Grapes and raisins are very toxic to dogs. http://www.snopes. com/critters/crusader/raisins.asp Written by: Laurinda Morris, DVM Danville Veterinary Clinic Danville , Ohio This week I had the first case in history of raisin toxicity ever seen at MedVet. My patient was a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix that ate half a canister of raisins sometime between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday. He started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking about 1AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't call my emergency service until 7AM. I had heard somewhere about raisins AND grapes causing acute Renal failure but hadn't seen any formal paper on the subject. We had her bring the dog in immediately. In the meantime, I called the ER service at MedVet, and the doctor there was like me - had heard something about it, but.... Anyway, we contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center and they said to give I V fluids at 1 1/2 times maintenance and watch the kidney values for the next 48-72 hours. The dog's BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was already at 32 (normal less than 27) and creatinine over 5 ( 1.9 is the high end of normal). Both are monitors of kidney function in the bloodstream. We placed an IV catheter and started the fluids. Rechecked the renal values at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40 and creatinine over 7 with no urine production after a liter of fluids. At the e point I felt the dog was in acute renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight as well as overnight care. He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet and his renal values have continued to increase daily He produced urine when given lasix as a diuretic. He was on 3 different anti-vomiting medications and they still couldn't control his vomiting. Today his urine output decreased again, his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was at 10, his phosphorus was very elevated and his blood pressure, which had been staying around 150, skyrocketed to 220.. He continued to vomit and the owners elected to euthanize. Please alert everyone you know who has a dog of this very serious risk. Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats including our ex-handler's. Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern. Even if you don't have a dog, you might have friends who do. This is worth passing on to them. Tuesday September 18, 2007 http://www.midhudso nnews.com/News/GuidingEyes-18Sep07.htm Covering the Hudson to the Catskills! Guiding Eyes for the Blind open school for seeing eye dogs in Orange County Middletown - Yorktown Heights-based Guiding Eyes for the Blind will be opening a dog training school at Morrison Hall at the Orange County Community College Middletown campus. Officials from the internationally renowned non-profit agency and county leaders Tuesday announced the arrangement, which will see dogs trained for guide duty for blind or visually impaired people. The first class will begin on October 12. Orange County Executive Edward Diana credited college President Dr. William Richards for taking the opportunity to house the guiding eyes school at the college. Guiding Eyes breeds 500 puppies per year and puts out 150 teams of dogs and clients per year. That totals about 6,000 Guiding Eyes teams around the world. "We will be training volunteers how to socialize and train puppies from about four weeks old to about 14 months old to prepare them to become Guiding Eyes dogs," said Director of Outreach Deutsch. Recipients of Guiding Eyes dogs pay nothing; funding comes from corporate and private contributions. HEAR today's news on MidHudsonRadio.com, the Hudson Valley's only Internet radio news report. NEW LAW LEAVES NO ROOM FOR A SCHOOL TO DENY ACCESS! HEATHER HANLON-PIERON, MOTHER OF ERIN HANLON, WHO TESTIFIED AGAINST SIMBA GOING TO SCHOOL, JOINS IN THE FIGHT TO BRING SIMBA TO SCHOOL! After being denied a Temporary Restraining Order by the Federal Court, JOHN CAVE JR. Appealed to the United States Court of Appeals. The Appeal is scheduled to be heard in November of this year. However, pursuant to the change in New York Human Rights Law by the legislature earlier this year, the language of New York State Law now leaves no room for East Meadow School District to deny John Cave Jr. & SIMBA access to the school. After the Federal Court's ruling, New York State passed a law that removed the language from the Human Rights Law cited by the Federal Court in denying the Restraining Order. The New York Legislature, stating clearly that they were not passing a new law, but CLAIRIFYING the existing law, has made it unmistakable that any disabled person accompanied by a hearing, guide or service dog must be admitted to all public facilities. The law becomes affective October 1, 2007. New York State also passed a new criminal law, making it a criminal offense to interfere with a hearing, guide or service dog. Under this new penal law, any person who interferes with or prevents, a hearing, guide or service dog, from performing their dutes, is subject to arrest and a term of imprisonment, if convicted. On Oct. 3rd, John Cave Jr. and SIMBA will return to school. What will the School do to accommodate Erin Hanlon? Will they Obey the Law and accommodate both children? Tuesday September 18, 2007 http://www.midhudsonnews.com/News/GuidingEyes-18Sep07.htm Covering the Hudson to the Catskills! Resident Publications, NY, USA Monday, September 03, 2007 Cruising Blind: The Sightless Take To The High Seas By Mike Stevens September 3, 2007 - 2:42pm Travel Sue Slater could feel waves of cold radiate from the glacier as her cruise ship slipped past the towering wall of ice in Alaska's Disenchantment Bay. Suddenly, she heard a car-sized chunk of ice tear away from the 40-story glacier before it crashed into the frigid waters. Being totally blind, she actually saw none of this and relied on her husband to describe the details of the scene while she soaked up the rest with her remaining senses. "Alaska was just breathtaking," Slater said. "I'd go back in a minute." For decades, the blind have headed to ski slopes, national parks and beaches for holidays. Now, like Slater, a chatty travel agent from St. Louis who lost her sight by her mid-30s, a growing number are heading out on the high seas come vacation time. If a cruise ship sails there, blind travelers have likely followed, Slater said. Familiar Caribbean spots in the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands remain popular, but blind cruisers have also climbed Mayan ruins in Belize, scampered up waterfalls in Jamaica and touched the totem polls of Alaskan Indian tribes. Although the cruise industry doesn't keep statistics, many travel agents and organizations like the Society for Accessible Travel and Hospitality agree that there has been a sharp increase in cruise travel among the blind in the last five years. "It's grown exponentially," said Jani Nayar, the society's executive coordinator. Cruises' popularity among the blind comes in part from convenience, said Jackie Hull of Outta Sight Travel, a Port St. Lucie, Fla., travel agency that puts together vacation packages for blind travelers. Normally, Hull said, a blind person on vacation would have to find his way to a hotel, then to a restaurant and later to a nightclub or concert hall for entertainment. "On board, everything is there. It's so accessible, you get acclimatized at once," Hull said. And what they lack in sight, they make up for with their other senses, whether it's sipping a pina colada, listening to steel drums play on a Jamaican beach or hearing fish jumping during spawning season in Ketchikan, Alaska. "People would say"Why would you want to travel, you can't see? You can't sightse", " Hull said. "We go beyond sightseeing; there are other senses." Hull and her husband, Gary Metzler, are such big believers that they spend most of their money traveling around the country lecturing on travel opportunities for the blind. Even before the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act 17 years ago, the cruise industry began improving services for the blind. If given advance notice, most cruise lines allow guide dogs, offer a guided tour of the ship to help orient blind passengers and frequently offer sightless passengers menus, itineraries and even bingo cards in Braille. Carnival Cruise Lines includes a training course for staff members on how to interact with blind passengers and their guide dogs. And the ships themselves are laid out to avoid confusion. For example, even though most modern cruise ships usually have 10 to 14 different decks, most activities from dining and dancing to swimming and slot machines can be found on the same three decks. Speaking elevators in most modern ships also help the visually impaired navigate their way around. "You can't get lost on a ship," said Vickie Kennedy, a buoyant 59-year-old Californian from the Bay Area who lost her sight to a degenerative eye disease. In 2004, Kennedy helped organize one of the larger group cruises for the blind and their guide dogs. It began while making plans for an Alaskan cruise to celebrate her 20th wedding anniversary with her husband, Jim, and guide dog, Freida, a yellow Labrador. After working with the cruise lines to ensure Freida could come aboard, she was told the ship could take two dozen more guide dogs. Kennedy began making calls and by the time the ship left its dock, 21 dogs were aboard fitted with brand new heavy-duty canine life vests and acclimatized to an ad-hoc doggy latrine on the tail end of the eighth deck, or as Kennedy called it, "the poop deck." The ship's crew took to the canine passengers as well. The dogs would convene on the top deck every afternoon to frolic off leash with crew members who were missing their own dogs. The ship's captain, Fabio Amitrano, was especially smitten with Kennedy's companion. "My Freida had a love affair," Kennedy said. "The two of them would take strolls on the upper deck together." At night, after dinner, Kennedy remembered returning to her cabin to find a chocolate on her pillow for herself and a doggy biscuit for Freida. Such outreach efforts are part of a larger trend in the cruise industry to make travel easier for people with disabilities, said Stephen Mydanick, an executive from the Society for Accessible Travel and Hospitality. "Of all the industries, cruise ships have done the most to make people with disabilities at ease," Mydanick said. And not only the blind, but also wheelchair-bound passengers and people who need dialysis treatments are finding warm welcomes as well as elaborate medical facilities. "The whole thing has changed from 'No we can't do that,' to 'Please come cruise with us,'" Mydanick said. "It's paying off for them, obviously." A 2005 study on disabled travel by Open Doors Organization, a Chicago-based nonprofit that advocates for the disabled, found that 12 percent of disabled travelers had taken cruises in the last five years compared with 8 percent of the overall population. Cruising in general is big business. In 2005, 11 million people took a cruise, making it the fastest-growing segment of the travel industry, according to Cruise Lines International Association, an industry trade group. This strong growth has led to exotic itineraries and new onboard luxuries ranging from Internet cafes to ice-skating rinks. Themed cruises have also shown strong growth. While today these specialized cruises cater to gourmands with wine tastings and shaved truffles or to fans of Broadway with onboard productions, it's possible an entire cruise might be geared one day toward the blind, according to Brian Major, an industry spokesman. And Slater, who arranged her Alaska cruise through Accessible Cruises and Travel, the blind-oriented travel agency she runs in St. Louis, said that recent improvements onboard cruise ships benefited people other than the disabled. After one of her cruises, Slater said all the blind passengers sent letters to the cruise line praising the crew for their efforts, from waiters describing what food sat where while presenting a plate to building a special area for guide dogs to relieve themselves. Slater found out later that quite a few sighted passengers sent in letters as well. After sharing a cruise with so many who were sightless, they wrote, in essence, "Thank you, we saw the cruise through new eyes." -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. According to the complaint, which was filed simultaneously with the consent decree in federal district court in Savannah, Ga., Defendants Herbert Bolt, Betty Bolt, and Herbert Bolt, Jr. violated the Fair Housing Act by refusing to rent an apartment at Hickory Plantation to a visually impaired individual who used a guide dog. Under the agreement, which must still be approved by the court, the defendants will pay $35,000 to compensate victims at Hickory Plantation and Willow Way, pay a $20,000 civil penalty to the U.S. government, establish and follow non-discriminatory tenancy procedures, undergo fair housing training, and file reports with the government. "Individuals who use guide dogs are entitled to the same housing opportunities as people who don't," said Rena J. Comisac, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. "Landlords must understand that they have a responsibility to make reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities, and where they fail to do so, the Department will enforce the law." The Department conducted its investigation using fair-housing testers - individuals who pose as renters for purposes of gathering information about possible discriminatory practices in the rental of apartments. This case is another example of the success of Operation Home Sweet Home, a concentrated initiative of the Department of Justice to expose and eliminate housing discrimination in America. This initiative was inspired by the plight of displaced victims of Hurricane Katrina who were suddenly forced to find new places to live. Operation Home Sweet Home is not limited to the areas hit by Hurricane Katrina and targets housing discrimination across the country. More information about Operation Home Sweet Home is available at the Justice Department Web site at http://www.usdoj. gov/fairhousing. Individuals who believe that they may have been the victim of housing discrimination at Hickory Plantation or Willow Way should call the Justice Department's Housing and Civil Enforcement Section at 1-800-896-7743 (option number 93), or send an email to fairhousing@ usdoj.gov. Since Jan. 1, 2001, the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division has filed 238 cases to enforce the Fair Housing Act, 112 of which have alleged discrimination based on disability. http://www.usdoj. gov/crt. __________________________________________________________ Building a website is a piece of cake. Why are these dogs qualified to acompany their handlers to theaters? Arizona Republic, AZ, USA Thursday, September 27, 2007 2 East Valley kids get K9 Buddies By Ray Parker Blind youths 1st in state to receive program's special dogs Strangers and friends all want to know the same thing after meeting 13-year-old Lauren Andera and her new companion: "Aaaawww, can I pet him?" "He's furry and playful," explained the Chandler resident, who got down on the floor for a closer conversation with Mocha, a 4-year-old black Labrador. Mocha, a registered K9 Buddy, doesn't have to do anything special while on the job - lick, bark, pant - but that's just fine. "Mocha was the first canine companion in Arizona," said Lauren's mother, Maureen Andera. "We would love to see this program expand for other children." Two East Valley blind children, Lauren, and Mesa resident Joshua Smith, 10, were the first in Arizona to receive a K9 Buddy through Guide Dogs for the Blind and First National Bank of Arizona. Both owner and pet completed the Guide Dogs' K9 Buddy training in San Rafael, Calif., which qualifies the pair to enter public areas, such as movie theaters, restaurants and, with a parents' permission, public schools. The dogs come from the Guide Dogs' colony, but are not qualified to work as regular mobility assistance dogs. Blind children are eligible to receive a fully trained guide dog once they turn 18, but with the new K9 Buddies, blind teens ages 14-18 can get a jumpstart on having a four-legged companion. "It gives him someone to be involved with and teaches him how to be more responsible. It makes him feel he has a friend," said Michelle Smith, the mother of Joshua, who lost his eyesight three years ago because of a retinal disease. The K9 Buddies are black and yellow Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, and Labrador/golden cross breeds. Most are young dogs that are unsuitable to be guide dogs for medical or behavioral reasons, but still make excellent companions. "One of the things I like to do is run really fast and when I have Mocha, it makes me feel like she guides me and it feels like I'm more safe when I run," said Lauren, an eighth-grader at Hamilton Prep. Mocha was tested for temperament, obedience and how he handled surprises, such as loud noises. Having a pet partner, Lauren's mother explained, helps her daughter feel more secure. "She has a truer sense of security . . . and the confidence to go places," Maureen said about her daughter, who was born prematurely and whose medical care resulted in her being blind. The K9 Buddy program costs about $5,000 per dog. Elizabeth Lamb Sawyer, who oversees charitable giving for First National Bank of Arizona, insisted on sponsoring the animals after learning about the K9 Buddy program. More recently, the bank donated another $15,000 toward the program.
