Message-ID: <200710011501.l91F123V012447@lothlorien.nfbcal.org> Subject: Cancer in Pets. Cancer in Pets - Don't Just Take it Laying Down! By Deanna Raeke Cancer, the Big "C" is one of the worst words a pet owner can hear. It almost sounds like a death sentence, but it doesn't have to be. Caught early enough and aggressively treated, survival rates are improving everyday. Cancer in Our Pets Cancer is not uncommon in dogs and cats and the incidence increases with age. It accounts for almost half of the deaths of pets over 10 years of age. Dogs get cancer at roughly the same rate as humans, while cats get fewer cancers. Here are some common warning signs of cancer; * Abnormal swellings that persist or continue to grow. * Sores that do not heal. * Weight loss. * Loss of appetite. * Bleeding or discharge from any body opening. * Offensive odor. * Difficulty eating or swallowing. * Hesitation to exercise or loss of stamina. * Persistent lameness or stiffness. * Difficulty breathing, urinating, or defecating. This is definitely one area where modern medicine has made huge strides but you don't need to rely only on modern medicine. There are many things you, as a pet owner, can do to improve your pet's chances and keep them strong and help them fight. What Can We Do? One of the first and most important things, from my point of view, is to make sure your pet's diet is as good as it can be. Specific diets have been formulated to help combat cancer but you can make your own at home very easily if you just keep some things in mind. Cancer cells metabolize food differently then we are used to. Extensive research has shown that cancer tends to grow quickly with plenty of glucose to 'feed' on. This glucose is the product of broken down carbohydrates, simple sugars. To cut the available glucose for cancer to grow on you need to cut down the carbs in your pet's diet. What cancer does not metabolize well is fats and the best fats to add is omega-3 fatty acids. These, aside from the fact that they may retard cancer growth, also have many benefits. They are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, they improve cardiovascular health and can boost immunity. As an added benefit, they also great for skin and coat. Flaxseed oil and cold water fish oil are the best sources. Cancer will also feed on protein but protein, at least a moderate amount of high-quality protein, is a necessity in your pet's diet. What the cancer is is actually 'feeding' on the the amino acids provided by the protein. Amino acids are the "building blocks" for tissues, organs, enzymes, hormones, antibodies, etc. This is why many cancer patients have low muscle mass. To combat against this, supplement your pet's diet with some good amino acids, even on top of the omega-3. Arginine appears to enhance immune function and may inhibit the growth of some tumors and for cats be sure to add Taurine which is a necessity in their diet. Another amino acid to add is glutamine, especially if your pet is on chemo. This is will help to keep the gastrointestinal tract in balance which can be beneficial since vomiting and diarrhea are two side effects often seen in chemotherapy treatments. It may also help to inhibit tumor growth. And last, but not least, add glycine. This will counter the effects of the chemo drug, cisplatin, on the kidneys. Antioxidants have been shown to slow the growth and spread of some types of cancer. They are known for their ability to fight 'free radicals.' Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Selenium are the most effective but you need to watch the dosage. Too much of any supplement can be a danger. Accepted dosages are Vitamin C dose: dogs 100mg per 10 lbs of body weight twice daily; cats, 250mg twice daily. Vitamin E dose: dogs and cats 100IU per 10lbs body weight twice daily. Selenium dose: dogs and cats, 25ug per 10lbs twice daily, but be sure to double check with your vet as an added precaution. 'Cytotoxic' is an agent or process that is toxic to or kills cells and chemotherapy is one form of cytotoxicity. A natural cytoxic is Vitamin A because it is a retinol. Studies have have documented the capacity for natural and synthetic retinoids to reduce carcinogenesis significantly. Vitamin A is also commonly known as the anti-infective vitamin, because it is required for normal functioning of the immune system. Now let's take a look at boosting the immune system. A strong immune system will help your pet fight off other illnesses that cancer treatment make it more vulnerable to as well as helping your pet to fight the cancer itself. Green tea is a well known immune system booster and it may as well inhibit cancer cell growth. You can easily add a standardized extract to your pet's diet. Ginseng is another well known immune system booster and may actually decrease tumors. Garlic also has immune building properties as well as antioxidant properties. Be careful with garlic though, high doses may cause anemia. I am not offering you any miracles but anything you can do to help your pet fight is a positive. Along with the diet and supplements, another very important thing you can do is keep a positive attitude. As pet owners, we know our pets are a lot smarter then they are often given credit for. They can pick up on our moods and feelings and attitudes. Keeping a positive outlook can do more for you and your pet than you probably realize. And for your pet's sake, think about going natural! -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. It has removed 205 spam emails to date. If the Internation Design Excellence Awards are any indication of the aid-gadget future, this might prove to be true, but not without some howling from our furry friends. Sebastian Ritzler, of the Muthesius Academy of Art and Design in Kiel, Germany, created an interactive guiding system for the blind called Mygo that comes in the form of a cool, rolling white cane. Some would go so far as to call the design 'flashy pimptastic.' The cane is supposed to be tough, height-adjustable for men and women, and waterproof. But here's the best part: It includes a system with a smart sensor and camera combo that can measure the ground area accurately in real time and pushes auditory feedback to a headset. In addition, the mini wheel at the tip of the cane has a hub motor that provides intuitive feedback through the grip, doubling as a steering engine that can last about 6 hours on a lithium-ion battery. All this would give people an excellent maneuvering system, especially during difficult weather. So this one could replace the regular old cane that a few blind people use, but can it move into the seeing eye canine's territory? There are many reasons why the cane couldn't fully replace the dogs but there's a really important one: Mainly, the cane won't hug you back or lick you silly. The positive social affect of a kind service dog is likely way too important in the lives of many in the blind community. While the device has not yet gone to production, the creator is looking at an affordable option - one estimate thrown around is about 150 Euros (about $200). The IDEA site lists a super -cheap option of about 15 Euros, but for the technology this item's going to be packing, that's probably a bit unrealistic. LINK: Here's the item page from the Business Week article detailing the Mygo. http://www.idsa. org/IDEA2007/gallery/award_details.asp?id=66&cat=12 (Source) http://blog. wired.com/gadgets/2007/09/design-student-.html __._,_.___ Messages in this topic (1) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Messages | Members Yahoo! Purebred dogs of the type that Guide Dogs uses are a geneticist's dream. Because the dogs are highly inbred and have well-documented genealogies, they can greatly simplify the task of tracking down genetic mutations that cause disease. "It's a wonderful population for us to be able to study," said Elaine Ostrander, chief of the cancer genetics branch at the National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, Md. Ostrander, who has been studying canine genetics for the last 20 years, heads the laboratory that is collaborating with Guide Dogs. The institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, participated in the international research effort that identified all the approximately 20,000 to 25,000 genes in human DNA. Half of the research Ostrander's lab does focuses on dogs. The other half is concentrated on the human breast and prostate cancer. Genetic researchers like Ostrander scrutinize the DNA of humans and animals that have contracted the same disease, searching for the genes they hold in common. In the case of human cancer, hundreds of genes have been identified, Ostrander said. The problem is determining which of these genes are playing the key role in causing the disease. That is where dogs will prove so useful, Ostrander said. "If you're trying to find the genes for a complex disease like heart disease, cancer, epilepsy or Addison's disease, it's really hard to do it just studying human families because there are so many genes out there," Ostrander said. But dogs are different, Ostrander said. "Within any single breed - because those breeds survive from a small number of founders and are closed populations - there are probably only going to be one or two genes that are important. It's a way for us to simplify the complexity that we face." Patti Van DeCoevering, veterinary director for Guide Dogs, met Ostrander during an educational conference in Florida several years ago where Ostrander was lecturing on the canine genome. DeCoevering struck up a conversation with Ostrander after the lecture about Guide Dogs and the extensive amount of information the organization keeps on its dogs. "You could see her eyes light up when she realized what we had," DeCoevering said. Guide Dogs has maintained a computer data base detailing the medical histories and behavioral traits of its dogs for more than 10 years. The organization, which was founded in 1942 to assist veterans blinded in World War II, has pedigree information dating back several decades, DeCoevering said. Ostrander will have a bounty of DNA with which to work. Because Guide Dogs envisioned the possibility of this type of research, it has been storing blood samples from its dogs for the last five years. Samples from about 5,000 dogs are currently being stored at the University of Missouri, DeCoevering said. Ostrander said, "We can look at the DNA and the complete life history of dogs who have sadly passed on at this point. It gives us a terrific advantage in doing our work." This isn't the first time that Guide Dogs' canines have played a role in improving human health. Some dogs that proved unsuitable to be guide dogs after being prepped for the program have been trained to warn diabetics when their blood sugar falls dangerously low. The dogs learn to detect the scent of low blood sugar. And five dogs participated in a recent study that demonstrated their ability to detect lung cancer in the breath of cancer sufferers with 99 percent accuracy. The study was conducted by the Pine Street Foundation based in San Anselmo. We have been experiencing some difficulties with crossing intersections, which I thought I could work out myself, so I have been doing so for about two or three weeks now. I finally gave in and called the school on Tuesday, and the trainers came out today to see what he was doing. So, in a nut shell, when we cross an intersection, Wonder will start out straight, but then he bows out into the traffic and then back as he picks up the line to bring me to the wheelchair ramp. So, today, we were working with the trainers, he did this again, which I thought with trainers around, he would not do it, but he did. Not only did he do this, but when we were walking down a street, on the sidewalk, we came across a driveway with cars waiting to pull out into the street. So, what Wonder tried, was to go around the back side of the car, which I stopped him. Not only was he going to go around the car, but behind it was another car, so he would have gone between two cars. So, after that, we were at another crossing, and when we went across, there was a car in the crosswalk, so Wonder decided to take us out into the on coming traffic instead of waiting for the car to move. These are things he should not be doing, so they are going to work with him starting next week. This means, that he will probably not be at convention. Well, that is where we will leave it for now, because we don't want to discuss what the next step will be if they can't work out the kinks. Well, that is what's going on here. I hope everyone is doing well and preparing for convention. To make this possible, the Red Cross has released a new book dedicated solely to the health and well-being of dogs. Dog First Aid is a unique health and emergency preparedness guide packaged with a full- length instructional DVD to make caring for your dog even easier. Because our pets depend on us to keep them healthy and safe, as a valued member of the family, it is important that we learn how to give them the best care possible. Dog First Aid is a comprehensive easy-to-read guide with instructions on how to care for virtually every aspect of a dog's health. With nearly 70 health and wellness topics, the book gives directions on treatment of everything from routine cuts and scrapes to rescue steps you should take if your dog is choking or has a cardiac emergency. Dog First Aid also demonstrates how simple it is to include your pet in the family's emergency preparedness plan. The book's easy-to-use quick reference guide and step-by-step instructional DVD makes it simple to learn and remember important health tips. The Red Cross assembled a skilled team of animal, emergency and safety professionals to develop a guide which covers many aspects of a pets' physical and mental well-being. Written under the guidance of Emergency and Critical Care veterinarian Deborah C. Mandell, VMD, and Red Cross health, safety and emergency preparedness experts, Dog First Aid has the most up-to-date and reliable information available to keep your dog healthier and better protected. "Dogs want to be at their best for us and are notorious for hiding illness until their condition is very advanced. But if you learn how to spot subtle changes in your dog's health early, your veterinarian will have a better chance of treating the problem," said Mandell. Everyone should prepare their home for accidents and disasters by stocking first aid and emergency kits. With the Dog First Aid book and DVD you can follow step-by-step instructions on how to build pet first aid and emergency preparedness kits design specifically to meet your dog's needs. Dog First Aid makes a great accompaniment to Pet First Aid courses offered at Red Cross chapters throughout the country. And, coming in November, the Red Cross will release the Cat First Aid book and DVD to help keep your felines fit and healthy. To purchase a copy of Dog First Aid for your family or favorite canine owner, visit the Red Cross online store at http://www.redcross .org/store or your local Red Cross chapter. The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work. It is a work in progress, a little window into the future. Sunday night was my first night here. I had forgotten how lonely the first night was without a dog. We were all nervous trying to figure out who we would be with each other. It wasn't like we could just be ourselves. That's how it felt. There were some liberals in this class; a nice counterbalance to the military structure of guide dog school. Monday, I got my dog; a little yellow lab named Bryant. I had a real issue with the new Swiss harness. So did Bryant. He developed an aversion to it almost immediately. Tuesday was our first route; the basic one from the downtown lounge just to get used to our dogs. Bryant just flew down the street. It felt good. Yet there was no movement from the harness handle, no way to do a harness check-and Bryant was getting more scared every time I tried to put it on. I'm annoying my class mates with this mantra. I asked for the old familiar harness. This one came complete with an off set handle which made my thumb turn and put me further to the right of my dog. Wednesday. I'm relaxed enough to actually play the piano and sing in the Day Room. Tuesday and Wednesday are so sad. I'm thinking I'll have to switch my dog for a taller one. I'm 6ft 4, and Bryant was built for someone about nine or ten inches shorter. I realize that I can't journal like this because the bond between Bryant and myself means much more. Now adays, Guide Dogs for the Blind uses what is called clicker training. I think they do this because of programs on Animal Planet. Keeps the money flowing in. Of course, there's an inherent flaw with clicker training. You have to click as soon as a behavior occurs. That level of precision isn't as practical for a blind guide dog handler on a busy street as it is for, say a sighted dolphin trainer who must teach the dolphin where the free throw line is. That is, incidentally where clicker training first started: training marine mammals. Did you hear about this trainer at Sea World who had her leg chewed off by a killer wale she had been working with for years? I can imagine that wale thinking, "if I hear that whistle one more time, I'll go nuts", and so he did. Where was I going with this-- oh yah clicker training. Clicker training was developed by science. Whose science, I'd like to know. I can't go there because I'll get lost again. Before you go to Guide dogs for the Blind, you get a packet of cds containing all the lectures so you can read up on how to work various situations. The cd says, "This is the sound of a clicker. Two quick tones. This is the sound of a clicker when it is incorrectly pressed." As I drifted off, I thought, " This is the sound of a golf ball." Two Ambien and I was away. Everything revolves around positive reinforcement. Our dogs get food rewards for crossing the street, for not being afraid of loud noises, for just lying still. Whereas the bond between a guide dog and her person used to be based on love and trust and so much more, our dogs now guide for nuggets of kibble. I know a trick dog when I see one. I thought that these were just idle thoughts, but I just heard a class mate walk by. When I said hello she said, "I'm going to get some kibbles so our girls will be good on the outside". In one fell swoop, guide dog school has drained the smarts out of our dogs and us as well. It's about numbers. You got to keep the money rolling in, and nobody works for fre e. Such is the claim. The one thing I thought about using the clicker for does not involve a specific enough target: bathrooms. You could teach the dog to find a specific bathroom in a specific building. To find another bathroom in another building, you would have to teach where that place was, and you'd have to call it something else than bathroom. They actually said that. Thus, clicker training might be popular, but it is almost of no practical value for the reasons stated above. I took a bad fall two weeks ago. There was some construction in the area, and I fell over a traffic cone. Everybody has falls, but this had come after a series of diagonal crossings. It was not an auspicious beginning for the teem of Bryant and myself. Two days ago, I almost lost my balance on a high curb in Berkeley. The result is that my guide dog, trained with food rewards and clickers and all kinds of behavioral techniques is trying to avoid up curbs and just go around the corner or out into traffic instead. My instructors can spin this and explain this all they want, but I'll be just as dead. Now we work on curbs. For two days, we work on curbs, and then it's graduation day. I met Bryant's raiser, a high school girl wise beyond her years. She told me of all the cute things Bryant did as a puppy. We talk for a long time, and she too has questions about food rewards and clicker training and they are the same questions I have. There is something else too. She understands that she is only a small part of a larger process. Suddenly, I understand that my instructors have shown us a little of how the magic works with our dogs. If I want or need to teach Bryant a complex route, I can, using back chaining. If he needs to target a pole or a bus stop, I can teach him with the clicker. And all the troubles in class, troubles with Bryant, troubles on the street, trouble around missing Velvet, it was all just stuff. Graduation gets longer every time. There are the speeches, the overview of the program. We even had a song written and recorded by Tamara's raiser. It's about money. It's always about money and satisfying the general public. Now that it's over, I have just one question. How did Rupert Murdoch manage to get so much power over the process of getting a guide dog? Now that we're home, I'm learning some other interesting things about my dog. Clicker training has thrown his timing off. He really does wait for the click or for the kibble. He's scared of traffic and still tries to avoid curb cuts and will look for something else, anything else. In a new situation, he has no confidence and no sense of what he's supposed to do. Remember my posting wherin I quoted my instructor? "This dog's not going to make it", the training department of GDB knowingly sent me home with a dog with whom I didn't feel safe. I am the first to admit that sometimes my orientation suffers. Sometimes, I start out for a destination without knowing exactly where I'm going. I'm the person who really needs a guide dog to guide, to think, to know that when I say Forward, he's committed to the process of getting me safely across the street. At this point, Bryant doesn't know what to do. I'm so sad. I'm going to work with him with every trick I know. It's early in the morning. I'm going out now while there is no traffic armed only with a clicker and a food pouch. Wish me luck. I'm back from the simplest of routes: across the street to the store and back. Bryant is now scared even of the little alley way between my house and the neighbor's. He was so scared and confused that I just came on home. He's asleep now. He's had a hard day. It's 7:15:am. Why am I going through all this sadness and worry? After all, it's not my job to Beta test guide dog school's new training program. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Bryant doesn't cross the street at the lines. He can't even go in front of cars stopped at a light. He goes behind them instead. It feels like we're going around something in the street like, say, a storm drain. I can't correct him because I don't know for sure what's going on. At school, I would try and second guess Bryant and would be told, "Follow your dog". Velvet saw this debacle and called Charles Nathan and gave him an ear full on his voice mail. He's not answering his phone when this number calls. Bye for now. This would be funny if it weren't so dangerous and sad. ----- Original Message ----- From: tina thomas To: cagdu at nfbcal.org Sent: Thursday, October 11, 2007 12:16 PM Subject: Re: [Cagdu] Mixed Feelings Hey Ken, The problems you described with Bryant is one of the reasons I have A problem with clicker training. Sounds serious with Wonder. Did you notice anything unusual with either his work or an unusual situation before the bowing to the left started? The reason I asked is that happened to one of my dogs who had been nudged by a car. I didn't think anything of it at the time, it was so small; but then he started cutting to the left and then back. It's a good thing you called GDA when you did. Good luck. And to one and all, I have a new yellow lab called Bryant. He's a high energy, high initiative dog with good manners. I hope he can learn to cross the street. They took Wonder out, and the trainer walking him was under blindfold, with another trainer observing, they were on a quiet street, with no traffic. Wonder still bowed out so they know exactly what he is doing, but are not sure if he will respond to the training. Starting Monday, they will work with him on straight lines, then they will work with him on crossings, and by Wednesday, they will call me and let me know where they are at. We worked along Ventura Blvd, a very busy place, with winds in the high 60's or 70's, it was very difficult to hear traffic. Wonder, crossed intersections, in a straight line, and in one instance, stopped in the middle of the street because a car was in the cross walk and he had no where to go. He is back to doing a great job, and is resting comfortably in his usual spot in the Living Room. This is all great news, with him coming to convention with me. The bad news, is that he is getting mentally tired, so the trainers said that if I let him go at his pace when working, he will be fine for a while, but if I try to push him, he will tire more quickly. Even though he has the physical ability of a puppy, his mind is tiring, which they said is usual for most working dogs. So, probably in the next year, depending on how he does, he will head towards retirement. If he is not doing well, then we will head toward retirement earlier. See you all in a few days. Unfortunately we've determined that we will not be able to modify the Pets for People website at this time to alleviate your access problem. The good news is Purina can offer some samples for your use as door prizes (or part of a door prize package) with guide dog users at your upcoming events. These would be sample packs of Purina's? Busy Bone? and T-Bonz? dog treat products. Perhaps in combination with other products as a "gift bag" they would make a very nice door prize or several door prizes. We can ship you one or two cases of each, whatever quantity works best for you (and your storage space limitations). The Busy Bone come 30 bones per case and the T-Bonz come with 20 of the 10 ounce pouches per case. We could get these shipped out to you in our next shipment round, we just need a shipping address from you. I look forward to your reply, John Sommer Purina? First thanks so much. The National Federation of the Blind is a tax exempt nonproffit organization which is why I ask the questions concerning donations in my previous email. Secondly Blind people of necessity use screen readers I use window-eyes a voice screen reader manufactured by http://www.gw-micro.com. When I atempted to fill out the form on the purina site it wouldn't let me put the check mark on charitable organizations so I couldn't get past the first page to request the grant. Also we initially are looking for small door prizes that would be of assistance for blind guide dog users but the guide dog affiliate does a lot of comunity Statewide and National education regarding the care, use, and also the legal rights and responsabilities of Guide dog users. From what I read on your site this is exactly the type of community project Purina might want to assist, but the form needs to be more accessible I think. It may work better with jaws for windows manufactured by freedom scientific but I can't say that for sure it's probable that both screen readers will have the same accessability problems filling out your form which is why I ask if there is some one we could call and relay the information directly to them to fill it in properly. We are having a State convention and our guide dog division is hosting a special event where they will give away door prizes to be used to assist Guide dog users. It will be held on October 25-28 at the Arden Hilton, Sacramento CA and the event will among other things educate blind dog users in good dog grooming skills. We need things like small bags of dry food, dog toys, treats, dog grooming kits etc. Of course at some point the guide dog division might apply for a grant because they do educational seminars, in fact they are having one shortly in Carlsdad CA You can learn more about the national Federation of the Blind in general at http://www.nfb.org If you can helpwith the smaller prizes please advise. Also we are having problems so farwith the online form it's not letting us check charitable instead it stays on the third choice. Can the division president call someone and have them fill in the form if we can't get it to work properly withvoice screen readers? Thanks for your help. Respectfully: Michael D.
