Message-ID: <001f01c81e2c$d6a28ab0$5779b543@ken5f734aa928e> Hi everybody. Gulliver's been pressed into service again. I have to get new stuff for him, as they only gave my friend Pam a cloth leash and leather collar. We picked him up last night. On the way back home, I realized that I had a prescription waiting at Walgreens. As I didn't have full regalia for Gulliver to properly guide, Velvet went into the store. An hour went by and I started getting nervous. This was late at night, and Walgreens wasn't in the best part of town. Reluctantly, I harnessed Gulliver up and holding only the handle of one of those old harnesses with all the J links between the harness and the handle, Gulliver and I went into Walgreens. His guide work was flawless, as he took me past the photo counter and directly to the pharmacy counter where Velvet was still sitting. It was no wonder that people were having to wait so long. There was only one person staffed to take care of a full compliment of druggies on a Friday night. The reason I'm telling this story is to show that even with the odds against us, even with no guarantee of success, I had the confidence to trust this dog. I knew that if at all possible, he'd get me where I needed to be. Bryant couldn't have gotten me across that parking lot even in full leash and harness. Something hit me last night. I had tried all the things I knew to do with Bryant and nothing worked. He was a great dog, but he wasn't a guide dog, at least not yet. The school had done all they could to mold him into a guide in the shortest possible time, even to the point of injuring his throat so that he couldn't growl. He could just hum with attitude. After all that, it broke my heart he couldn't guide. It just broke my heart. Well, it's off to Pet-smart now and then to breakfast. Bye for now. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Foster & Smith, Inc. Giardia are protozoa (one-celled organisms) that live in the small intestine of dogs and cats. Giardia are found throughout the United States and in many other parts of the world. Infection with Giardia is called 'giardiasis.' There are many things we do not know about this parasite. Experts do not agree on how many species of Giardia there are and which ones affect which animals. Veterinarians do not even agree on how common Giardia infections are and when they should be treated. Generally, it is believed that infection with Giardia is common but disease is rare. There is much about the life cycle we do not know either. How do Giardia reproduce and how are they transmitted? Giardia multiply by dividing. A dog becomes infected by eating the cyst form of the parasite. In the small intestine, the cyst opens and releases an active form called a trophozoite. These have flagella, hair-like structures that whip back and forth allowing them to move around. They attach to the intestinal wall and reproduce by dividing in two. After an unknown number of divisions, at some stage, in an unknown location, this form develops a wall around itself (encysts) and is passed in the feces. The Giardia in the feces can contaminate the environment and water and infect other animals and people. What are the signs of a Giardia infection? Most infections with Giardia are asymptomatic. In the rare cases in which disease occurs, younger animals are usually affected, and the usual sign is diarrhea. The diarrhea may be acute, intermittent, or chronic. Usually the infected animals will not lose their appetite, but they may lose weight. The feces are often abnormal, being pale, having a bad odor, and appearing greasy. In the intestine, Giardia prevents proper absorption of nutrients, damages the delicate intestinal lining, and interferes with digestion. Can Giardia of dogs infect people? This is another unknown. There are many species of Giardia, and experts do not know if these species infect only specific hosts. Sources of some human infections have possibly been linked to beavers, other wild animals, and domestic animals. Until we know otherwise, it would be wise to consider infected animals capable of transmitting Giardia to humans. You may have heard about Giardia outbreaks occurring in humans due to drinking contaminated water. Contamination of urban water supplies with Giardia is usually attributed to (human) sewage effluents. In rural settings, beavers most often get the blame for contaminating lakes and streams. Giardia outbreaks have also occurred in day care centers fueled by the less than optimal hygienic practices of children. How do we diagnose giardiasis? Giardiasis is very difficult to diagnose because the protozoa are so small and are not passed with every stool. Tests on serial stool samples (one stool sample every day for three days) are often required to find the organism. Special diagnostic procedures, beyond a routine fecal examination, are necessary to identify Giardia. The procedures we use to identify roundworms and hookworms kill the active form of Giardia and concentrate the cyst form. To see the active form, a small amount of stool may be mixed with water on a microscope slide and examined under high magnification. Because these forms have flagella, you can see them move around on the slide. The active forms are more commonly found in loose stools. If you ever have the opportunity to see the active form of Giardia under the microscope, take it! It is an interesting-looking creature. It is pear-shaped and its anatomy makes it look like a cartoon face, with eyes (which often look crossed), nose, and mouth. Once you see it, you will not forget it. Cysts are more commonly found in firm stools. Special solutions are used to separate the cysts from the rest of the stool. The portion of the solution that would contain the cysts is then examined microscopically. In spring, 2004, a diagnostic test using ELISA technology became available. This test uses a very small fecal sample, and can be performed in 8 minutes in a veterinarian's office. It is much more accurate than a fecal examination. We have done the tests, now what? Now we come to how to interpret the test results. It can be a dilemma for your veterinarian. What you see (or do not see) is not always a correct indication of what you have. A negative test may mean the animal is not infected. However, few, if any, laboratory tests are 100% accurate. Negative test results can also occur in some infected animals. If a negative test occurs, your veterinarian will often suggest repeating the test. What about a positive test? That should not be hard to interpret, right? Wrong. Giardia can be found in many dogs with and without diarrhea. If we find Giardia, is it the cause of the diarrhea or is it just coincidence we found it? The animal could actually have diarrhea caused by a bacterial infection, and we just happened to find the Giardia. Test results always need to be interpreted in light of the signs, symptoms, and medical history. If we find Giardia, how do we treat it? Here we go again; treatment is controversial too. There is a question about when to treat. If Giardia is found in a dog without symptoms should we treat the animal? Since we should not know if G. canis can infect man, we often err on the side of caution and treat an asymptomatic infected animal to prevent possible transmission to people. If we highly suspect infection with Giardia, but can not find the organism, should we treat anyway? This is often done. Because it is often difficult to detect Giardia in the feces of dogs with diarrhea, if there are no other obvious causes of diarrhea (e.g.; the dog did not get into the garbage several nights ago) we often treat the animal for giardiasis. There are several treatments for giardiasis, although some of them have not been FDA- approved for that use in dogs. Fenbendazole is an antiparasitic drug that kills some intestinal worms and can help control giardia. It may be used alone or with metronidazole. Metronidazole can kill some types of bacteria that could cause diarrhea. So if the diarrhea was caused by bacteria, and not Giardia, the bacteria can be killed and the symptoms eliminated. Unfortunately, metronidazole has some drawbacks. It has been found to be only 60-70% effective in eliminating Giardia from infected dogs, and probably is not 100% effective in cats, either. It can be toxic to the liver in some animals. It is suspected of being a teratogen (an agent that causes physical defects in the developing embryo), so it should not be used in pregnant animals. Finally, it has a very bitter taste and many animals resent taking it - especially cats. Quinacrine hydrochloride has been used in the past, but is not very effective and can cause side effects such as lethargy, vomiting, anorexia, and fever. But now we come to yet another unknown. It is possible these treatments only remove the cysts from the feces but do not kill all the Giardia in the intestine. This means even though the fecal exams after treatment may be negative, the organism is still present in the intestine. This is especially true of the older treatments. So treated animals could still be a source of infection for others. How can I prevent my pet from becoming infected with Giardia? The cysts can live several weeks to months outside the host in wet, cold environments. So lawns, parks, kennels, and other areas that may be contaminated with animal feces can be a source of infection for your pet. You should keep your pet away from areas contaminated by the feces of other animals. This is not always easy. As with other parasites of the digestive system, prevention of the spread of Giardia centers on testing and treating infected animals and using sanitary measures to reduce or kill the organisms in the environment. Solutions of Lysol, bleach, and quaternary ammonium compounds are effective against Giardia. How do I control Giardia in my kennel? Infection with Giardia can be a big problem in kennels, and a multi-faceted approach is needed. Treat Animals: Treat all nonpregnant animals with fenbendazole for 5 days. On the last day of treatment, move them to a holding facility while a clean area is established. When the animals are moved back to the clean area, treat them once again with a 5-day course of fenbendazole or albendazole. Decontaminate the Environment: Establish a clean area. If possible, this can be the whole facility. Otherwise, create a few clean runs or cages, separate from the others. Remove all fecal material from the areas since the organic matter in feces can greatly decrease the effectiveness of many disinfectants. Steam clean the area. Quaternary ammonium disinfectants used according to manufacturer's directions or a 1:5 or 1:10 solution of bleach can usually kill the cysts within one minute. Allow the area to dry for several days before reintroducing the animals. NOTE: Use extreme caution when using quaternary ammonium compounds and bleach solutions. Use proper ventilation, gloves, protective clothing and follow your veterinarian's recommendations. Clean the Animals: Cysts can remain stuck to the haircoats of infected animals. So during treatment and before moving the treated animals to the clean area, they should be regularly shampooed and rinsed well. Especially concentrate on the perianal area. Prevent Reintroduction of Giardia: Giardia can be brought into the kennel either by introducing an infected animal or on your shoes or boots. Any new animal should be quarantined from the rest of the animals and be treated and cleaned as described above. You should either use disposable shoe covers or clean shoes/boots and use a footbath containing quaternary ammonium compounds to prevent people from reintroducing Giardia. Remember, Giardia of dogs may infect people, so good, personal hygiene should be used by adults when cleaning kennels or picking up the yard, and by children who may play with pets or in potentially contaminated areas. Eye Dog Foundation announced earlier this month it would temporarily close the facility. In the interim, The Seeing Eye, with about 1,800 active graduates in the United States and Canada, is offering instructional services to Eye Dog graduates who might need follow-up services. "When we match a Seeing Eye dog to a student, our commitment to that team does not end once the 27-day training ends," explains Seeing Eye President Jim Kutsch. "We continue to provide assistance to graduates during the entire life of the partnerships with their dogs. Sometimes a graduate will move to a different neighborhood and require additional training to navigate a new and particularly difficult intersection, for example. Or a dog that has experienced interference from someone's pet dog might suddenly develop a fear of other dogs. In those and other cases, we will send an instructor to help the graduate resolve these issues." Until Eye Dog Foundation is able to re-open its doors, The Seeing Eye will offer these services to anyone with a dog guide from the Phoenix school. For information on receiving these services from The Seeing Eye, Eye Dog graduates should call The Seeing Eye at (800) 539-4425 and ask for the Training Department. The Seeing Eye, established in 1929, provides specially bred and trained dogs to guide people who are blind. Seeing Eye dog users experience greatly enhanced mobility and independence, allowing them to retain their active lifestyles despite blindness. The Seeing Eye is a philanthropy and is supported by contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations, bequests, and other planned gifts. The facility, one of only two in the nation dedicated to training German shepherd guide dogs, has all but closed after trainers and other employees walked off the job in a dispute over the management of the non-profit agency. Those close to the organization say it's the latest display of mismanagement from the 65-year-old charity that, in the past year, has experienced financial troubles and major infighting among board members. An attorney for the board said that those issues are behind them and that leadership is working to revive the training center, though no reopening date is scheduled. In the meantime, volunteer puppy raisers and the blind have banded together to keep the charity's mission alive. The organization was founded in 1952 as a California non-profit but for years existed only on paper while leadership collected and invested donations. By the 1970s, the foundation began contracting for the acquisition and training of German shepherd dogs as guides for the legally blind. Of the 10 million people in the U.S. who are blind or visually impaired, only about 7,000 use guide dogs, according to the American Foundation for the Blind. There are about 20 guide-dog schools nationwide, most of which train Labrador retrievers. German shepherds are a prized breed of working guide dog, favored for their focus and strong work ethic. Group's troubles The local organization has paired more than 50 handler/dog teams over the past decade, but it has had legal issues in the past, the first being in the 1980s, when a California judge prohibited the foundation from establishing a training facility in-state. In 1988, the organization purchased a 3-acre parcel on 15th Avenue south of Baseline Road in Phoenix for a training center, while executive operations remained in California. Legal issues arose again in March, after the six-member board deadlocked over management issues in the wake of its executive director's resignation. Half of the board members sued to dissolve the foundation. Joey Etienne, a court-appointed receiver, took over the foundation and found that "there were bills that weren't being paid . . . and it took us awhile to get the money back on track." With a net worth of at least $12 million, Etienne said, the foundation was well-funded, with competent training staff in place. He said some of the board members had been with the agency for many years and had not kept up with modern management techniques. "Not only did this board need to go away, but the entire organization needed to leave the state of California," Etienne said. "There was no other nexus other than this was where the money was housed." He was also concerned about the foundation's administrative leadership. "There needed to be a professional non-profit person running the foundation," Etienne said. "That didn't exist." But before Etienne's recommendation was submitted, founder and board member Lequita McKay died, and the suit was dismissed. In the months following, board member Gwen Brown was voted in as executive director. Vendors began complaining about lack of payment by September; the head trainer, Manny Gonzales, quit, as did the kennel manager. A month later, another trainer and staff member resigned when their paychecks didn't come through. Barbara Kuhns, whom Etienne appointed as administrator at the training facility, put the chain and padlock on the gates before she left. "Non-profits don't pay a lot, and when you don't get paid, you can't live off air," Kuhns said. Since the facility closed, three pairings, scheduled for September, October and November, have not occurred. Working together Anna Thomasson has raised two German shepherd puppies that went on to become guide dogs for the blind. She has been organizing bimonthly meetings for the 30 puppy raisers and their charges since the facility closed. Trainers used to host puppy classes every two weeks for troubleshooting and obedience work, so raisers have rallied to keep the puppies on track. "My concern is the dogs losing momentum in their training," Thomasson said. "Puppies, just like children, have key developmental periods. I think you risk . . . losing the dog as a guide." Thomasson said puppy raisers have been connecting "more than usual" by e-mail to keep each other encouraged and motivated. That's all they can do, she said. "I hesitate to say we've been abandoned, but we have no leadership, we have no direction and we don't have the professional guidance we need," Thomasson said. "I wish that I would have received some correspondence or some contact saying, 'We know there's no staff here, and we acknowledge you may be concerned.' "We've heard nothing." River Forest of Phoenix used to take her guide-dog Chili to puppy classes as a refresher. She said Gonzales, the former head trainer, visited her home to work with Chili when the dog was skittish about heavy traffic coming up from behind. "To be able to call him, have him come out and look at it was good because it saved a great dog," Forest said. "I just want to be able to get the help if I need it." With no word from the foundation, she said, she has been left to scour the Internet for resources. Bob Barta, an attorney for the foundation, would not answer questions about how or if the charity has attempted to communicate with its clients and volunteers. In an e-mail, he said the foundation has been offered assistance from other guide-dog programs and would arrange for someone "who is qualified to call them back." Even so, volunteers and clients worry the foundation, long known for its reliable dogs, is developing a poor rapport with the blind community and the public. Barta said the foundation is interviewing guide-dog trainers and hopes to reopen as soon as possible. In the meantime, Thomasson said the puppy raisers plan to fill in the gaps. "The organization only has trouble in the background," Thomasson said. "It's about the puppy raisers and the dogs. My personal plan is to continue my commitment to Nisha. I am passionately committed to my dog and seeing it through for her." article URL: http://www.azcentra l.com/news/articles/1102blinddogs1102.html# Copyright C 2007, azcentral.com. He felt an urge to eat an Egg McMuffin. So Carlson headed into the McDonald's restaurant across the street from his office. When he reached the counter, another odd thing happened. He was refused service. "I'm sorry, your pet can't be in here," Carlson recalls the young lady behind the counter telling him. She was referring to Musket, the 7-year-old yellow Labrador retriever that is Carlson's guide dog and wears a guide dog's distinctive leather harness with a stiff handle. Carlson explained Musket's purpose, but the young lady did not believe him. She offered to serve Carlson, but only if he and Musket went out on the patio. So he showed her Musket's Guide Dog Identification Card and followed that with a laminated card spelling out his rights. It begins: "California law guarantees a blind person the legal right to be accompanied by a specially trained guide dog in all public accommodations . . . " She wasn't buying it for a minute. "You'll have to step outside. I have other customers to serve," she told him. Her stubbornness may be explained, in part, by the fact that Carlson doesn't act like he's blind. He has retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that allows him to make out shapes but not details. He can recognize a head, for instance, though he won't see the face. And when he asked to speak to a manager, his eyes likely darted around the McDonald's, looking for the shape of another employee. The manager came and listened, but still, no sale. Carlson was told to read the sign outside, which, if he could have read it, would only have made him angrier. It says, "No pets. We welcome assistance dogs." So Carlson went to work hungry Thursday. At this point, I should explain what Carlson does for living. He works for Access to Independence, which is dedicated to helping people with disabilities live independently. The organization, formerly known as the Access Center, has been located on University Avenue across from the McDonald's for most of the past 30 years. And part of Carlson's job is working with people who use service animals, educating them about their rights and advocating for them. Would you like fries with that irony? "They picked the wrong person," Carlson told me. "This was like mugging a cop." Back at his office, Carlson talked with his colleagues, consulted with a lawyer and then tracked down Dana Swanson, the restaurant supervisor for the McDonald's. Swanson apologized repeatedly and assured him that the problem would be rectified. That afternoon, Carlson and Musket returned to the McDonald's to get the names of the manager and the young lady behind the counter. By then, the shifts had changed and an entirely different crew was working. The new crew told Carlson to take his dog outside. "It was like a bad movie. Unbelievable," he told me. "The obvious hostility and outright digging-your-heels-in obstinacy of these people blew my mind. I've heard about it before but never encountered it." He finally got the names he wanted - the first names only - but not until he had summoned four of his colleagues from across the street and two San Diego police officers. On Friday morning, Carlson and Musket made a third trip to McDonald's, with far different results. They were greeted warmly at the door by the owner, Ernie Sandoval, as well as Swanson and Kevin Kereluik, the director of operations for Sandoval's 15 restaurants. I was there, too, and when I introduced myself, Sandoval, Swanson and Kereluik fell silent and looked as if they'd eaten a bad meal. But soon enough, they got around to the purpose of the meeting: apologizing profusely and assuring Carlson that the employees were all being trained in the legal rights of people with disabilities. What else can we do? Sandoval asked. "I'm going to give you guys room to run in, but I want to see results. I don't ever want this to happen to anyone again," Carlson told them. "I'm not one of those people who sue to make money," he added, which no doubt relieved them greatly. "I detest people who do that. They give people with disabilities a bad name." And so Sandoval promised that his restaurants would work closely with longtime neighbor Access to Independence to further its programs. By the end of the day, three officials with McDonald's had called to inquire how they could be helpful. "I'm having a very good day," Carlson said. I reminded him that in three visits, he hadn't eaten a thing. That was OK by him. "I think I lost my taste for that McMuffin," he said. Jesse Acosta >From the Los Angeles Times His courage knows no darkness Steve Lopez November 11, 2007 He was a soldier in Iraq and he's a soldier now, shoulders squared and head held high on a street corner in Santa Fe Springs at 6:30 a.m., waiting for a bus with his guide dog, Charley. Sgt. Maj. Jesse Acosta's hat says "Army." His green jacket says "Military Order Purple Heart. Combat Wounded." Dark shades conceal his prosthetic eyes. Better to fight the enemy on distant shores, the argument goes, than fight the enemy here. But that doesn't mean the war doesn't eventually come home. For Acosta, a 50-year-old gas company employee with a wife, four children and three grandchildren, what happened in Iraq will permanently complicate his life. "OK, we're going to take the 62 to the 108," says Felicia Echeverria, an orientation and mobility trainer with Junior Blind of America who is teaching Acosta how to travel by bus. Echeverria has been working with Acosta since February, helping him adapt to 24-hour darkness. "He's amazing," she says, telling me she hasn't had many students with his courage and determination. He has already graduated from white cane to German shepherd, and now he's making his first attempt to ride a bus with his new dog and report for computer and GPS training at Junior Blind headquarters in the Southwest Los Angeles area. "Forward," Acosta commands when the bus door opens. Charley sets a paw on the first step of the bus. Acosta, with a firm grip on the dog's harness, dangles a foot off the curb and searches the empty space between sidewalk and bus. The move is daunting. It's a short step, but it's also a leap of faith, with invisible geometry to negotiate. Acosta is balanced on one foot, dog tugging, passengers waiting and watching. With Charley's help, Acosta finds his way. He's up the stairs and telling the bus driver to please announce his transfer stop when they get to it. He asks her if there's an open seat on the left or the right, and looking in her rear-view mirror, she gets it wrong. Acosta is about to sit in someone's lap when the passenger tells him the open seat is on his right, not his left. He sits down, relieved, pulls Charley back out of the aisle and takes a breath. Everyone on the bus is watching. When you're blind, Echeverria says, you lose your privacy. The driver forgets to tell Acosta his stop is next, so Echeverria fills the gap. "I guess I better get used to this," he says without a trace of self-pity. This is a man who lifts weights every morning in the backyard and still has a military bearing and sense of purpose. The transfer is clean. Acosta doesn't trip or bump into any poles, as he's done more than once. He has to get this down cold, he says, because early next year he'll go back to work with the Southern California Gas Co., traveling by bus to Downey. His days of house calls as a customer service rep are done, but the company has told him it will find something else for him. Bumping along on Slauson, I ask Acosta why he did it. Why, in 2002, did he re-enlist in the Army Reserve, as he had done previously after seven years of active duty following high school? Was it Sept. 11? "No, not really. I'm a warrior, and I still had a lot left in me." The call to duty came in the spring of 2005, with deployment to Iraq in late October. His wife, Connie, had trouble with it, proud of her husband but tired of sharing him with the Army. He told her it was a safe assignment -- a logistics and supply operation at Camp Anaconda along the Euphrates River near Balad, Iraq. "Little did I know they called Anaconda 'Mortaritaville,' " Acosta says. The mortars flew into the base every day. Then a first sergeant, he commanded 43 soldiers and routinely ordered them to dive for cover. He was doing just that Jan. 16, 2006, when he was hit. A shard of shrapnel ripped through his left eye, destroyed the nerve that controls taste and smell, nicked his brain, then took out his right eye. "They say I was crawling around on the ground, shouting orders," says Acosta, who remembers nothing. Only later did he learn that surgeons spent more than seven hours trying to save him. Then he was flown to Germany for more treatment. "I got a call from the doctor in Germany," Connie says. "He said, 'You know, I tried to get him to where he would ever see light again.' He cried with me -- the doctor. He said, 'I'm sorry, but he'll never be able to see again.' " Several surgeries followed, with more to come. Acosta's palate and several teeth were blown out of his head, and doctors have taken bone from his hip to rebuild the palate. When he eats a hamburger, he puts familiar textures together with memories of what cheese and mustard tasted like. "I try to savor it," he says. "I hope it was worth it, Mr. Bush," says Echeverria, who has a tear in her eye. But Acosta doesn't engage. He says he believed in the cause when he re-enlisted, and even now, traveling across the city in eternal darkness -- and weighted, perhaps, with a touch of guilt for the sacrifice his wife and family must make -- he doesn't question his service. What he does question, his voice taking on an edge, is the quality of care he received after coming home. Walter Reed Army Medical Center released him too soon, he said, and he was sent to a Palo Alto rehab center for the blind while still reeling from the brain injury. "I received no care whatsoever coming back to the U.S.," he says, exaggerating only a little as he describes it. "You come back from the battlefield, you can't eat, and if not for older vets saying, 'Hey, kid, you've got a plate of food in front of you,' I wouldn't have known it." He was so depressed, he began wishing the surgeons hadn't saved him. That piece of shrapnel could have hit almost anywhere else on his body and caused less damage. How could it have been so perfectly angled to take both eyes and prevent him from ever seeing his wife and children again? "Every day I had massive headaches from my injuries, and I didn't even have access to staff. Nothing. If you needed them before 8 a.m. or after 4 p.m., forget it, they were gone. They expected me to get on with my life. "Who sent me here from Walter Reed like that? I had to seek my own medical care, believe it or not. I told them I was leaving Palo Alto and they said, 'You can't do that.' I said, 'Watch me.' " Acosta says his new mission is to advocate for injured vets. "I've learned enough about the system to help them figure things out," he says, and he's already begun networking, using VA sources and other contacts. They shouldn't have to figure it out, I tell him. He made the sacrifice, and the care should be there, period. "I know," he says. But with Charley at his feet, and with some passengers listening in, I can tell he's done with that subject. He does credit the West Los Angeles VA with referring him to the nonprofit Junior Blind ( www.juniorblind.org), where, for the first time, he believed he could rebuild his life. He was inspired by such staffers as Bert Borja and Les Subotnick, both blind, who are showing him how to read books and write letters with voice-assisted software. A director named Ken Metz, blind since birth, is already taking Acosta around to serve as a motivational speaker to other visually impaired people. It's almost 9 a.m. when the 108 stops at Alviso Avenue. Sgt. Maj. Acosta and his dog Charley get off the bus, cross the intersection and turn north for a two-block walk. They're getting the rhythm down, marching at a good clip now, with Echeverria marveling at Acosta's discipline and determination. Last March, he ran the Los Angeles Marathon with his 14-year-old daughter, Brittany. She was the one most devastated by his injury, and he wanted to prove to her that he still has a lot left in him. "I don't want anyone to do anything for me," Acosta had told me on the bus when I asked why he doesn't ask his wife to drive him to these training sessions. "If I have to bounce off every pole and fall off every curb, that's what I'll do." steve.lopez@ latimes.com If you want other stories on this topic, search the Archives at latimes.com/archives. He's 25inches and weighs 70 pounds, but he's only fifteen months old, so I imagine he'll fill out some. He's a black lab and I'm in love with him already. I shouldn't say that sight unseen, but you guys know how we are with our dogs. Bye for now. Ken -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated. All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, and cars would be free of hair. When the doorbell rings, it wouldn't sound like a kennel. When the doorbell rings, I could get to the door without wading through fuzzy bodies who beat me there, nor would my foot be bruised by the big dog stepping on it to get there. I could sit on the couch and my bed the way I wanted, without taking into consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get comfortable. I would not have strange presents under my Christmas tree -- dog bones, stuffed animals, toys, treats nor would I have to explain to people why I wrap them. I would have money .... And no guilt to go on a real vacation. I would not be on a first-name basis with 6 veterinarians, as I put Their yet unborn grandkids thru college. The most used words in my vocabulary would not be: out, sit, down, come, no, stay, and leave him/her/it ALONE. My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or barriers. My house would not look like a day care centre, toys everywhere. My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an extra leash. I would no longer have to spell the words B-A-L-L-, F-R-I-S-B-E-E, W-A-L-K, or T-R-E-A-T. (And I-C-E C-R-E-A-M). I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside. I would not look strangely at people who think having ONE dog/cat ties them down too much. I'd look forward to spring and the melting of snow instead of dreading mud season and finding all that poop under the snow. I would not have to answer the question "Why do you have so many pets?" from people who will never have the joy in their lives of knowing they are loved unconditionally by someone as close to an angel as they will ever get. CTHE CANADIAN PRESS/Jonathan Hayward Isobel, a six-year-old husky cross, has all the great qualities of a sled dog. She loves to run, has strength and endurance, and works well alongside the other dogs tethered to the sleds that take tourists out on the subarctic terrain of Churchill, Man. It takes a while for visitors to notice that she is completely blind. "The dog lost its vision, but it didn't lose its spirit," Dr. Evan Fisk, Isobel's Winnipeg-based veterinarian said in a recent interview. "It can smell, hear and feel other dogs nearby." Isobel not only follows other dogs on the sled team owned by Jenafor Ollander and her common-law husband, she sometimes runs lead in tandem with another husky. "She runs tours every single day right now ... and we have tourists from all over the world that are absolutely amazed," Ollander said. "I'm sure some of them think I'm crazy when I tell them she's blind." Isobel wasn't born blind. Everything seemed fine until one day three years ago, when she suddenly came to a halt in the middle of a sled run and started staggering around. "We hooked her back up in her house and noticed that both of her pupils were completely dilated," Ollander said. "I remember a couple of people mumbling, 'What good is a blind sled dog? You should just take her out and shoot her.' And I'm a bit stubborn in nature ... and I said, so what if she can't be a sled dog? she's a good dog." Isobel was taken to Winnipeg , where Fisk noticed her retinas had detached, possibly the result of a virus. Back in Churchill, Isobel was kept indoors. Ollander figured she would be happy and safer inside. Ollander was wrong. "She stopped eating and drinking and we were quite concerned about what was going on," Ollander said. "We happened to bring one of our other sled dogs home, and she perked right up. So it dawned on us that the problem was she was depressed and she missed her pack more than anything else." Isobel was soon reintroduced to her canine comrades and her behaviour improved right away. She started eating and drinking again. With some hesitation, Ollander's husband decided to take a chance and hook Isobel up to the sled team and see what would happen. "That dog ran like you wouldn't believe. She ran better than when she had her eyesight," Ollander said. Isobel has been running ever since. She relies on the other dogs, human vocal commands, and her other senses to avoid obstacles. It's not a complete surprise for Fisk. "I believe that their senses adapt and they adjust, just like a person," he said. "We know that people hone in well on their hearing skills and their sense of vibration and time and distance and smell and everything like that. And dogs become really acute at that. When they lose their vision, the rest of their senses kind of take over." Isobel is sometimes put up front with another dog for races, and has beat other dog teams in head-to-head competitions. She still has a couple of good running years left in her. But she's already nearing the age when many sled dogs hang up their harness. Finding a good home for her might be a challenge. "We've had several people who've offered to adopt her ... but we're really concerned because she just loves to run," Ollander said. "We want to make sure that she doesn't end up in a situation where she gets depressed again." "She's OK in the dog yard where she has her dog yard buddies." __________ NOD32 2684 (20071125) Information __________ This message was checked by NOD32 antivirus system. http://www.eset. com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] __._,_.___ Messages in this topic (1) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Messages | Links | Database | Members | Calendar If you reply to this message it will go to all members on the list, not just the sender. It's only a matter of time before factory-grown meat becomes fast-food reality. A small batch of stem cells can be used to grow large sheets of pork. Scientists can add vitamins, fatty acids and flavors to the meat, which could one day be processed into food products. It sounds like a sci-fi nightmare: giant sheets of grayish meat grown on factory racks for human consumption. But it's for real. Using pig stem cells, scientists have been growing lab meat for years, and it could be hitting deli counters sooner than you think. Early attempts produced less-than-enticing results. Then, in 2001, scientists at New York's Touro College won funding from Nasal to improve in vitro farming. Hoping to serve something, well, beefier than kelp on moon bases and Mars colonies, the scientists successfully grew goldfish muscle in a nutrient broth. And, in 2003, a group of hungry artists from the University of Western Australia grew kidney bean-size steaks from biopsied frogs and prenatal sheep cells. Cooked in herbs and flamb?ed for eight brave dinner guests, the slimy frog steaks came attached to small strips of fabric - the growth scaffolding. Half the tasters spat out their historic dinner. (Perhaps more significant, half didn't.) Today, scientists funded by companies such as Stegeman, a Dutch sausage giant, are fine-tuning the process. It takes just two weeks to turn pig stem cells, or myoblasts, into muscle fibers. "It's a scalable process," says Jason Matheny of New Harvest, a meat substitute research group. "It would take the same amount of time to make a kilogram or a ton of meat." One technical challenge: muscle tissue that has never been flexed is a gooey mass, unlike the grained texture of meat from an animal that once lived. The solution is to stretch the tissue mechanically, growing cells on a scaffold that expands and contracts. This would allow factories to tone the flaccid flesh with a controlled workout. Lab-grown meat isn't an easy sell, but there could be benefits. Designer meat would theoretically be free of hormones, antibiotics, and the threat of mad cow disease or bird flu. Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins could be blasted into the mixture (see illustration above) or dispersed through veins. Revolting? You bet, but have you ever visited a sausage factory? Currently costing around R750 000 per kilogram, a choice cut of lab meat makes Kobe beef seem like a bargain. But meat-processing companies hope to start selling affordable factory-grown pork in under a decade. Bon app?tit. I would become vegan first, and how would something like this change pet foods, making them still yet less natural for our working dogs? How much more expensive would "real meat" become if this truly took off? I doubt it ever will, but what if? Yuck! From http://www.popularm echanics.co.za/content/science/singlepage.asp?fid=769&pno=1 The oink-less BLT Who needs animals? "It would take the same amount of time to make a kilogram or a ton of meat." Iredale, the woman injured in the Oct. 5, 2005, wreck on BPW Club Road in Carrboro, filed a civil suit against Coffee, claiming he was the driver and asking for compensation for medical bills and severe emotional distress, as well as punitive damages. The trial is scheduled to begin today in Orange County Civil Superior Court with jury selection. On Monday, Superior Court Judge Paul Gessner heard pre-trial motions from both Iredale's and Coffee's attorneys. The judge decided to exclude an anonymous letter that someone sent Iredale claiming that he, not Coffee, was responsible for the wreck. The letter, which was not read in court, was described as saying that the author was sorry for what happened but was afraid to come forward to accept the consequences. The letter was postmarked in Fayetteville but did not identify the author. After Iredale received the letter, she turned it over to investigators at the Carrboro Police Department, who dusted it for fingerprints but were unable to identify who had written it. Kristie Farwell, one of Coffee's attorneys, said the question of who was driving her client's car that morning is the crux of the case. Coffee always denied he was driving and said someone named Brian was driving his car, she said. Iredale's attorney, William Plyler, argued that the letter would only be confusing because no one knows who wrote it. It could have been by written by Coffee himself or a friend of his, the lawyer said. Gessner agreed with Plyler, saying the hearsay law requires the name and address of the person and there was no evidence that letter was trustworthy because it was anonymous. He said the letter could not be submitted as evidence. Coffee pleaded guilty in August 2006 to driving while impaired and felony hit and run but did not admit his guilt during a criminal hearing. He was sentenced to four months in prison. After Coffee was released from prison, he went to Virginia, according to Plyler, and applied for a driver's license there. On his application, he did not mention his North Carolina license had been revoked for the Iredale wreck and that he had just served time for driving while impaired and felony hit and run. Coffee's defense team asked the judge to exclude mention of that incident, but the judge denied their motion after Plyler said it is evidence of Coffee's lack of credibility. Coffee's defense team asked that evidence of emotional distress from the death of Iredale's Seeing Eye dog, Inka, and photos of Iredale and Inka be excluded from the trial. A dog is considered property in North Carolina, and a person cannot be compensated for emotional loss of property, said Reid Russell, Coffee's other attorney. Plyler told the judge there may be an exception to the law regarding Seeing Eye or assistance animals and asked for additional time to research the issue. Gessner allowed the two photos of Iredale and Inka to be submitted into evidence and told Plyler to be ready this morning to make further arguments about Seeing Eye dogs and assistance animals. Coffee's attorneys also asked that the value of Inka be limited to what Iredale paid for the dog, which was $150. She paid $50 for a replacement dog, they said. Plyler told the judge that the value of a Seeing Eye dog is between $50,000 and $70,000 based on the cost and time it takes to train the animal. A person receiving a Seeing Eye dog pays a token fee, which does not reflect the actual cost of the dog. The judge denied the defense's motion to exclude the cost of training the dog, but said they could question Iredale about how much she actually paid for the dog. Other defendants in the case, including the bar He's Not Here, and Eric Stubbs, an employee of the bar, have settled out of court in a confidential agreement. On Monday, defense attorneys said they wanted to know how much the settlement was for, but the judge denied their motion for now. It could come up later in the trial if it turns out the other defendants made a deal to testify against Coffee, and at that time, the issue could be reconsidered. C 2007 by The Durham Herald Company.
