Both have been attacked by pit bulls and Leo has also been shot in the leg by someone with an air rifle. Leo is one tough and loyal old companion. Three times in the past 18 months, the West Auckland guide dog has been savaged by pit bull terriers. Another time, while guiding handler Petrus Tuerlings along the street, Leo was shot in the leg by somebody with an air rifle. The 11-year-old great dane-pointer cross is a symbol of the increasingly violent climate in which Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind dogs have to work. It's an expensive battle. Dogs cost the foundation $22,500 each to breed and train and, after an attack, many have to be retrained or withdrawn. For their handlers, that can be a catastrophe. There is a long waiting list for trained guide dogs and an injured dog cannot quickly be put back into action. Foundation dog instructor Angie Coupar said that, in the past year, 15 dogs - worth about $330,000 - had required significant veterinary treatment after dog attacks. "Menacing behaviour toward guide dogs happens on a daily basis somewhere in New Zealand." The foundation says both dog and handler suffer crises of confidence after attacks. Mr Tuerlings now gets nervous when he hears dogs barking ahead. He was with Leo when the dog was shot and managed to get him to a vet quickly. The pit bull attacks, on both Leo and Mr Tuerlings, have been more frightening. "I am more frightened for him than for me." In the last attack, in December, a pit bull charged at Leo, tearing his stomach. "There was no warning, he just came running out." Though a big dog, Leo did not fight. "He was giving little whimpers and little nips at the dog, because he was latched on to the stomach, but he wasn't really fighting at all." The foundation breeds and trains its dogs not to be aggressive. "If one of our dogs shows aggression, they cannot be used," Ms Coupar says. "It makes it more difficult for one to defend itself. "It's not used to that kind of behaviour. They have been socialised all their lives with other friendly dogs. They are restricted in a harness; they cannot jump or leap out of the way." Leo is now facing retirement. Mr Tuerlings is keeping him, though; he found him as a youngster at a dog pound and the foundation's Guide Dog Services later recognised his guiding talents. Age has barely wearied him, though his handler says he no longer goes to restaurants because Leo is not keen on lying under a table for an hour or so. "He's lost his patience for all that." http://www.stuff. co.nz/stuff/dominionpost/4047056a6000.html __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Alabama is not a clicker dog we missed by a few classes. I've even seen the petco or petsmart trainers using it when I've been in the store. It sounds good. At last national convention I went to a workshop hosted by GDB. They taught the fundamental principles of clicker training. I think we were there for about an hour to an hour and a half. Definitely not enough time to be an expert but what I saw was pretty cool. My opinion is it seems to bring out the initiative in your dog. I'm not sure what dangerous components may be associated with clicker training. The only thing I can think of is the dog's possible mistaking the clicker sound. The sound is pretty distinct and comes from a specific area. From what I understand the clicking comes from your right hand holding the harness and or leash. I don't think dog's are that confused. I hope I was helpful. Ken could you be a little more specific about your concern so you could get a clearer answer. I've got plenty of those. luis From manongrassyknoll at gmail.com Mon May 21 21:56:30 2007 From: manongrassyknoll at gmail.com (luis g) Date: Mon, 21 May 2007 21:56:30 -0700 Subject: [Cagdu] clicker traning In-Reply-To: <3de2c5e10705212152g54c71ebbudfcf63a2124a31e8@mail.gmail.com> References: <001001c79bfc$859a6320$b445b643@ken5f734aa928e> <3de2c5e10705212152g54c71ebbudfcf63a2124a31e8@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <3de2c5e10705212156qed6f10ao8268b6fca43e89b9@mail.gmail.com> Sorry I meant I think clicker training is good. I request inclusion in the listed opposition to this ill- conceived legislation being considered by your committee. IAADP is a cross-disability consumer advocacy organization with more than 1,700 people with disabilities working with guide, hearing and service dogs. Our independence, safety, mobility and an improved quality of life are interwoven with our trained canine assistants' ability to mitigate some of the effects of our disabilities. AB 1634 threatens the very foundation of the relationship between us and our canine partners in independence. Many assistance dog programs rely on breeding their own stock to supply puppies for future guide and service dog work. Among these are Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB)in San Rafael, the largest guide dog training program in the country, and Canine Companions for Independence, (CCI) in Santa Rosa, the originator of the service dog concept. AB 1634 requires neutering or spaying at 4 months of age, considerably earlier than dogs demonstrate their ability to work as canine assistants. GDB and CCI, as California-based internationally recognized programs, would face virtual annihilation. My wife and I have guide dogs trained at Guide Dogs for the Blind, and we, as well as more than 2,000 blind and visually impaired GDB graduates throughout the United States, would face a future without successor canine assistants if AB 1634 were implemented. This would threaten our ability to safely travel, work and enjoy other aspects of daily life. Exemptions in AB1634 are not provided for assistance dog training programs breeding their own future working dogs. However, exemptions are recommended for commercial and for profit breeders, thus excluding not-for-profit programs Like GDB and CCI. Since only registered pure-bred dogs would be permitted to breed, successful working dogs, such as Golden/Labrador Retriever, Labrador/Poodle and other cross-breeds, would be eliminated. The suggestion in the bill that active working assistance dogs be used for breeding purposes shows a lack of understanding of the assistance dog movement. Working assistance dogs are spayed and neutered to guarantee that sex drives will not interfere with their work ethic. Thus, they are eliminated from the breeding and gene pool. Although some training programs breed their own stock, many smaller programs rely on hobby breeders, most of whom are not commercial or for profit breeders, to donate puppies as future working dogs. This is the case for Guide Dogs of the Desert of Palm Springs and Pawsitive Teams of San Diego. Here again, AB 1634 threatens future recruitment of dogs to help disabled people. California is not only the home for more than 15 guide, hearing and service dog programs, it is also the home of more disabled people partnered with assistance dogs than any other state. If AB 1634 is passed, it will have a negative impact on disabled Californians, but also on people with disabilities throughout the United States. The basic premise of the bill is that mandatory spay and neutering will result in a decline in animals brought to shelters. Actually, animals in California shelters have shown a significant decline during the last two decades based upon continuing educational efforts. A large number of dogs and cats are brought to shelters between the ages of 18 and 36 months by their owners because of behavioral issues and AB 1634 would have no impact on these relinquishments. Instead of being called the California Healthy Pets Act, this piece of misguided legislation should be the California Deprive People with Disabilities of Their Assistance Dog Act! Thank you for taking the views of IAADP into consideration Sincerely, Ed Eames, Ph.D., President IAADP Tanya Eversole, Director IAADP Board of Directors Membership Coordinator / Database Manager (513) 245-2199 www.IAADP.org "Together we go farther than we could ever go apart." UPDATE 2: We received a call from an Iams spokesman. We have update the story with their response. ORIGINAL POST: Itchmo has learned that a toxicology test reported the presence of cyanuric acid in an opened bag of what is alleged to be Iams Large Breed dry dog food. According to the report obtained by Itchmo, the results have been certified by a forensic toxicologist. We have obtained a copy of the toxicology report. Iams Large Breed does not list rice protein concentrate or wheat gluten as ingredients. In response, Iams says they are ?fully confident? that no cyanuric acid or melamine entered their products. They also defended their ?exceptional response? to handling customer complaints. When asked if they were testing for melamine and cyanuric acid after the manufacture of their products, Iams said that they were ?constantly improving their quality control processes.? We cannot stress this point enough: This test was performed on a sample from an opened bag. We do not know if this is an isolated case of contamination before or after the sale, or if it is widespread. This information requires verification and we are asking for your help. Itchmo is asking you to find an unopened 20 lb. bag of Iams Large Breed dry dog food that matches the lot number: 260608 70574173 F4 US30940 with the expiration date of 6/26/08. If you find an unopened bag, please email us at tips at itchmo. com and we will provide further instructions. If it?s the right bag, we will pay for the cost of the bag of food, shipping and testing. There will be no cost to you. If an unopened bag is found and tested, we will release the results as soon as they become available regardless of the outcome. slkatzman chusakaandme [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] __._,_.___ Messages in this topic (1) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Messages | Polls Yahoo! Their work was directly responsible for saving an estimated 10,000 American lives. Yet their story is a largely forgotten part of the war. Image Veterinarian Alan Cunningham sits beside the memorial to war dogs at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park. Michael Brandy, Deseret Morning News American Fork veterinarian Alan Cunningham is one of those who is hoping to change all that. Cunningham recently erected a memorial to war dogs and their handlers at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park near Camp Williams. "A few years ago, I read about the war dogs and was both impressed and saddened by their story," he says. "Fewer than 200 of them ever returned home. Some 325 died in the line of duty, while another approximately 600 succumbed to tropical disease. But at the end of the war, the rest were considered military equipment and were either euthanized or left behind. They deserve to be remembered." The memorial is one of only a handful of such monuments around the country, most of which are on military bases. "This is the first one to be placed at a veterans cemetery, but I think it is a fitting place for it," says Cunningham. It is a simple monument, with a bronze dog sitting on a sandstone slab. Cunningham purposely did not want to show the dog in halter. "I wanted it to be a dog, not to be working." Because, he says, as important as the work was that the dogs did, when they were not working, they offered companionship and love that were also important to the soldiers. The monument was installed in April, without ceremony or dedication. "I just wanted it to be a quiet, humble thing," says Cunningham, "but I hope, with Memorial Day coming up, some people will want to come visit it." He pretty much footed the cost of the memorial himself. "I tried to get donations, but not many people were interested. I did get some from the Bank of American Fork. But I decided I could just work more and get the money myself." That speaks to why the memorial is important and needed, he says: Too many people don't realize what war dogs have done. "When I tell people about the war dogs, some are amazed, but some say, 'So what?' But you think that if those other 10,000 soldiers had died in Vietnam, maybe one of them would have been a person that has had an impact on your life, or my life, directly or indirectly." Image A soldier in Vietnam relaxes in the demilitarized zone with his tracker dog. Deseret Morning News archives There is now a push to have a national memorial to war dogs placed in Washington, D.C. Increased interest in the story of the war dogs has grown out of a 1999 documentary, which first aired on the Discovery Channel but has aired worldwide since, says Mo Johnson, who works with the War Dog Memorial Fund, which is raising money for the effort. The film tells "the heart-wrenching story of the bond between the dogs and their handlers and the great lengths they look to save one another from the tragedies of war," she says. (The documentary is free with a donation of $10 or more to the fund. For more information, visit www.war-dogs.com.) "I believe the dogs should be recognized. Their stories are stories of love. I've met many of the handlers, and they all say that if it wasn't for their dogs, they wouldn't be here today," she said, in a telephone interview from their California headquarters. There is also a push to have the dogs honored on a commemorative postage stamp. Two requests have been denied, but a third one is going on now. "It's pretty sad that cartoon dogs can have a stamp, but we can't get one for real-life service dogs," said Johnson. Decades later, handlers who served in Vietnam still break down and cry as they tell of their dogs' heroics, says Cunningham. "The courageous canine soldiers worked for food, water and the love and companionship of their handlers. They never gave up on the battlefield." Dogs were used extensively in Vietnam, but that is not the only time they have been called into action. They've been used for centuries, says Cunningham, and certainly in every modern war, including the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Military Working Dogs, as they were called then, were used in World War I but became increasingly important in World War II. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the American Kennel Club and a new group calling itself Dogs for Defense appealed to dog owners across the country to donate quality animals to the Quartermaster Corps. Image A weary GI and his pup take a break from the horrors of Vietnam. Deseret Morning News archives Starting in March 1942, the Quartermaster Corps handled the Army's so-called K-9 Corps and undertook the necessary training. By 1945, they had trained approximately 10,000 war dogs for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Fifteen war dog platoons served overseas in World War II; seven in Europe and eight in the Pacific. In 1951, responsibility for the dogs was shifted to the Military Police Corps, as they continued to serve in conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and other military operations. The most commonly used dog breeds were German shepherds and Doberman pinschers. Later on, Labradors began to replace the Doberman. These dogs were able to detect the presence of the enemy at distances up to 1,000 yards - long before the soldiers could see them. When a scout dog detected the enemy, it would stiffen its body, raise its hackles, prick its ears and hold its tail rigid. "They could detect the wind blowing over a trip wire or smell underwater saboteurs," says Cunningham. There are also documented cases of dogs lying on their handlers to protect them and of dragging wounded soldiers to safety. "They were so effective in Vietnam that the Viet Cong placed a bounty of $20,000 on the heads of dogs and their handlers," he says. In recent years, the military has changed its policy on the dogs. They are no longer considered "equipment," and when their tour of duty is done, they are brought back. "They may be assigned to help with rehabilitation," says Cunningham. "They are very effective at that, as well." War dogs, he says, "have been forgotten service animals. They often get overlooked. But like Seeing Eye dogs and police dogs, they all have such an important place." Image Michael Brandy, Deseret Morning News His memorial honors them all, he says. "I hope one day I can look back and say I left something good on the face of the Earth. I hope that here, at least, these dogs will be immortal." Three years ago, a tennis ball-size tumor left Kizere with optic nerve damage and 2 degrees of sight, the equivalent of looking through a piece of construction paper that has a pinhole poked into it. Normal-seeing persons have 180 degrees of sight. "I call it my tennis-ball accident," said Kizere with his characteristic sense of humor. "It's an easier icebreaker than saying a brain tumor." Despite his limited sight, the designer can distinguish color, shape and texture, the elements of good design. "Color has always been really important to me," said Kizere, who recently started his own business, Robert Vaughn Designs, after working for Norwalk Furniture & Design in Tempe. (Vaughn is Kizere's middle name.) "If you're a shade off, it doesn't look right." Kizere, who has more than 30 years of interior design experience, works out of his Tempe house, but his briefcase really serves as his home office. He spends a lot of time traveling across the United States to help clients, many of whom are referrals or repeat customers. Around town, he takes buses to clients' homes. "I have my laptop, a digital camera and my dog and I can do anything," he said. His Seeing Eye dog, a golden retriever named Mayor, is like a mini marketing manager for Kizere. "People just love him. They start talking to me just because of him. (Once they do,) I've got them hook, line and sinker," he said, referring to how he often attracts clients. Because of Mayor, he met one client while on an airplane and two others at restaurants. Norwalk co-owner Mike Schoor said that Kizere's abilities stand on their own. "He's a great natural salesman," he said. "He is an absolute master in networking his way to become his client's single source for everyone in his home. He is very prideful of being self-sufficient and working toward ultimately satisfying his clients without depending on anyone in that process." It took three buses recently to get to client Janet Drummond's Tempe patio home, where Kizere was to help flesh out ideas for a bathroom and den. He already had helped coordinate the decor of her living room and dining area by making the small rooms feel larger. In the dining area, he placed two mirrors on top of each other, adding depth to the space. Built-in plant shelves, lined with decorative pottery, draw your eyes upward. In the living room, which features a baby grand piano, Kizere artistically placed a sectional sofa and lounge chair so the space wouldn't seem so small. "I always thought I was pretty good at decorating, but Robert opened my mind," said Drummond, who has been pleased with her home's transformation. "I'm impressed with his amazing intuition. He can feel a room." Nevertheless, being blind and a designer hasn't been easy. Because of his limited vision, it takes him longer to do the work he needs for each project, he said. That he is good at math has helped. "I'm a walking calculator," he said. He uses adaptive equipment to read and often will ask a client to be his assistant in tasks such as measuring. "I want to preserve my eyesight for color, shape and texture," he said. Kizere's health problems began as headaches, which he thought were due to sinus pressure. When the headaches turned into dizziness, he went to the hospital, where he was told he had a slow-growing tumor the size of a golf ball. Surgery was scheduled for a month later. In that time, the tumor enlarged to the size of a tennis ball. Before the operation, Kizere, now 55, had retired. After the surgery, however, he had second thoughts about not working. He took college design classes, just to see if he was able to do the work. "I had to prove to myself," he said. He also wanted to keep his brain active. Now, when something goes wrong or doesn't look right, he has an excuse, he said, laughing. "I say, 'Oh, darn, that's what happens when they take the part of your brain that works.' "That's probably the best thing I have going for me: my attitude." Details: www.robert vaughndesigns.com or (480) 221-0954. May 26, 2007-- I have to share my sad news. Today I had to put my sweet baby cat, Cinomon to sleep. She became very ill yesterday and stopped eating, so I rushed her to the vet today. The diagnoses was terminal, she had jondus in the last stages. The vet said there was no cure, she was already shutting down by not eating and she would just die in a few days. Rather than finding her dead, I decided to set her free of her illness. She was put to sleep at 3:45 pm. Marly and I are having a hard time without her tonight. Cinamon was wonderful, loving and Marly's littlest sister. All of you who met her and had the opportunity to cuddle her I know agree.
