Guide dogs allowed to relax in retirement

The Yomiuri Shimbun

After many years of service, guide dogs deserve a
happy retirement, says Saeko Aono of Tokushima. True
to her word, she has adopted two retired guide dogs
over the years.

During her recent lecture at the Tokushima prefectural
government's animal protection center, Aono spoke of
guide dogs' "right to live their final days
in loving care."

She adopted a retired guide dog named Curly in
September 1998. The dog developed a cataract and is
slow to respond to Aono's calls. Nevertheless, she
takes
advantage of every opportunity to speak to Curly.

"I'll certainly feel very sad when Curly dies. But I
knew her death was drawing near from the first day I
took her in," she said.

"I'm pouring my love out to Curly because I want her
to live happily in my care."

Curly is the second veteran guide dog Aono has
adopted.

She received her first guide dog, Uruka, in January
1997. Four months later, Aono arranged a reunion
between Uruka and his former master because the dog
appeared to be close to death due to heart problems.

Aono said that Uruka used his last bit of energy to
wag his tail for his former master.

Guide dogs usually serve blind people for 10 or 11
years after two years of training. They normally
retire at the age of 12 or 13 and are handed over to
volunteers.

Seven guide dogs are registered with the prefectural
government.

In the past, 10 dogs have found new homes after
retirement. Three of them are still alive.
