Take your guide dog outside, owner told

By Steve Evans

DARRAN PRIDMORE is registered blind - but he and his guide dog were three
times refused service at a Nuneaton petrol station.

He says he was asked to take his faithful companion Duke outside and was
amazed that no-one in the queue behind him offered any kind of support.

Mr Pridmore, aged 30, of Park Avenue, Attleborough, has now brought the
incident to the attention of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in the

hope of raising awareness of the problems faced by people who are visually
impaired.

He and his girlfriend called at the Central Avenue petrol station, in
Central Avenue, Abbey Green, to get some petrol last Thursday evening.

Mr Pridmore said: "While she was filling up, I went into the shop to pay.

"As a partially-sighted person, I was assisted by my guide dog, Duke.

"I was asked three times by the person serving to take my guide dog outside
and was refused service.

"After the third time of being asked, I requested a written statement by the

manager explaining why I was being asked to do this.

"Only then was I allowed to pay for the fuel. I then left."

He said he was particularly disappointed with the reaction of other people
in the queue.

He said: "Throughout, nobody in the queue behind me offered any support.
It's so disappointing that in this day and age this type of incident can
occur.

"It shows a complete lack of respect for these very special and talented
dogs whose contribution to their owner is priceless."

What the boss of the garage said

AFAQUE CHAUDRY, the petrol station manager, told the Nuneaton Telegraph that

he was "crushingly embarrassed and absolutely flabbergasted" to learn of the

incident.

He said: "This must have been totally humiliating for the gentleman
concerned and I can only apologise."

Mr Chaudry said the shop assistant who served Mr Pridmore was almost
certainly an immigrant worker, who was not aware of their policy regarding
guide dogs.

He added: "I am absolutely horrified to hear about this and I will
discipline the person involved."

He said he hoped to meet Mr Pridmore to apologise to him in person.
