Tina and Nina Fw: Michael Osborn has passed away Sent: Saturday, December 08, 2007 3:50 PM Subject: [nagdu] Michael Osborn has passed away Many of you know of Michael Osborn's tireless efforts to secure access to the United Kingdom for us and our guide dogs. Over the past four years Michael has made real progress. In fact, we are almost there. Michael has worked with people on both sides of the pond. He has made many friends along the way. I just received the following e-mail from Theresa Duncan, guide dogs for the blind's alumni Association director, informing us all that Michael passed away last evening. It is so easy to say "this is a sad day". Michael would not want this. He would want us to keep moving forward in order to secure the access to foreign travel we all desire and dessert. I have already communicated with representatives from DEFRA. I have worked very closely with Michael over the past several years and intend to continue the work he has begun. I rejoice in having known Michael and having had the opportunity to work with him. His commitment and tenacity should be an inspiration to us all. Thanks Michael for all you have done and for all you have taught me and all of us. Job well done! I have some sad news to share. This morning I received a call from Michael's sister letting me know that Michael passed away last night in the hospital. He had been dealing with a variety of serious medical challenges over the last few years. I consider myself extremely lucky for having had the opportunity to work with Michael and to call him my friend. His commitment to, and passion for, working of behalf of guide dog users everywhere should be an inspiration to us all. I will miss his easy sense of humor and ZEST for life. His guide Hastings is in a safe and loving home with Michael's sister. As more information regarding the way in which his family would like his memory honored becomes available I will let you know. If you have suggestions on how we (his GDB family) should remember his legacy, please let me know. Thank you all, I know he loved and respected each of you greatly. Express & Star (UK) Monday, December 10, 2007 Guide dog owner's pit bull terror A blind man today told how he, his teenage son and his guide dog were attacked by an unleashed pit bull in the centre of Wolverhampton. Kevin Lloyd was on his way home from work when the dog set upon his four-and-a-half-year-old dog Watson, which was pinned down and left with deep bite marks to his head and eyes. Mr Lloyd, 43, said he and Watson were rescued by staff from a bank as the pit bull's owner looked on from a bus stop. "I can't believe the owner had a dog like this loose," the Birmingham Midshires worker said. "If it had been a smaller dog, or even a child, it would have been torn to pieces. I was walking through the city centre with my 19-year-old son Jonathon when the pit bull went straight for Watson. "We tried to drag it off him but it just kept on coming back and pinning him down. It was a really volatile and violent dog. "The owner was in a bus stop drinking beer with his mates. Staff from the Royal Bank of Scotland came to help us." The attack happened in Princes Street at 1pm on Friday. Mr Lloyd, of Kent Road, Wednesbury, said: "The dog bit Jonathon on the arm but luckily it didn't get through his winter coat. He later said it was the scariest thing that had ever happened to him. "Traumas like this can really affect guide dogs and even end their careers. Luckily, Watson's injuries were superficial but he was shaken by the whole thing. We are now looking after him at home." Mr Lloyd's MP, Tom Watson, said today said he was "shocked and horrified" to hear of the attack and called for immediate action to find the dog involved. "Mr Lloyd's dog had teeth marks and cuts around his face," the West Bromwich East MP said. "It is a shocking thing to happen to someone in a shopping area, and there should be a full inquiry." This is Leicestershire (UK) Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Broken bottle puts vital guide dog out of action By PAUL CONROY 10:30 - 11 December 2007 A guide dog needed an emergency operation to treat "horrific" injuries suffered when he sat on a broken bottle. The trained golden retriever, called Keats, was badly injured during a walk with his visually-impaired owner, Eric Day, on Sunday. It happened when the dog sat on the edge of a kerb - just as Keats is trained to do - near their home in Beatrice Road, in Newfoundpool, Leicester. Today the animal's owner said he could not understand how people could litter the streets with dangerous glass. Mr Day, who has had Keats for more than six years, said a woman passing by noticed the injury but the golden retriever still managed to guide his owner home. He said: "Being a guide dog he sits at every curb. When I felt it, there was blood pouring out. "It was quite a deep and nasty gash, but he got me home - he did his job." He said an emergency vet had to be called out, who decided the eight-year-old dog needed an operation straight away. He was given a general anaesthetic before the vet could stitch the wound. Keats is out of action for a few days while he recovers from his ordeal, but Mr Day is confident the golden retriever will make a full recovery. Mr Day said: "He had to be knocked out and stitched. He's all right. He can't work for a couple of days." The 55-year-old said Keats was absolutely vital to him living independently. He said: "It's the difference between getting out and staying in. I'm not so keen on the cane. He makes a big difference." However, he revealed that this was not the first time Keats had suffered a injury from people smashing glass in the street. The guide dog needed shards of glass removing from his paw a few months ago. Mr Day said: "I can't see why people need to smash bottles in the street. I can't understand it." Keats was provided by the Guide Dogs charity which condemned the thoughtless behaviour that led to the injury. Charity spokesman Graham Kensett said: "What has happened to Keats is horrific. Because a glass bottle was casually left on the pavement, a guide dog has had to undergo a stressful operation and his owner has to rely on other people to get around." Mr Kensett said the charity campaigned to reduce obstacles in the street, such as shop signs, overhanging trees and bins. He said: "Many people do not realise that discarded rubbish, chewing gum and glass bottles can cause serious injuries, such as this." http://www.thisisle icestershire.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=1329 35&command=displayContent&sourceNode=132702&contentPK=19220357&fo lderPk=77465&pNodeId=132393 __._,_.___ Messages in this topic (1) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Messages | Polls MARKETPLACE _____ Earn your degree in as few as 2 years - Advance your career with an AS, BS, MS degree - College-Finder.net. A Christmas Story. One bright Christmas Eve, Santa Claus awoke looking forward to taking to the night sky on his sleigh. He got out of bed, pulled on his hat and big red coat and opened the outside door to go and visit his trusty reindeer. It was snowing and very cold. As Santa approached the stables, he smiled at the thought that he would soon see Rudolph's red nose shining through the blizzard. But, oh no, wait a minute; as he turned the corner, Santa saw not one but nine shiny red noses! Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph were all looking miserable. "Oh dear," said Santa, "what's up with you all?" Comet, the reindeer union rep, stepped forward. "I'm very sorry, but none of my reindeer will be able to do a full night's present delivery shift," said Comet, looking sad. "This is the first time we've ever wimped out on you, but we're all feeling lousy this year Santa and, well, we feel you'd be better off with some other helpers just this once." "Comet, this is disastrous news!" Santa held his head in his hands. "I'm not sure I can get all the presents out to all the little boys and girls without help from my reindeer." At this, Blitzen and Prancer stepped forward. "To be honest Santa, we had always worried something like this might happen," said Blitzen, sounding very bunged up. "With this in mind, some years ago Prancer decided to approach another group of magical creatures with special powers who might be able to stand in during an emergency." "Well, Prancer," Santa turned to the other reindeer whose eyes were streaming, "Do tell me. What is your idea? Which other creatures of the world have magical powers that can match those of my nine wonderful reindeer, of whom so many songs are sung and tales are told?" "Why ... Guide Dogs, of course!" smiled the reindeer. He turned towards the snowy white plains of Greenland, tapped the ground three times with his hoof, bowed his head and antlers, then majestically reared up making a very loud calling sound that echoed round the four corners of the planet. Within the space of thirty seconds, a shadow appeared far on the horizon. As it got bigger, Santa could just make out nine glowing yellow labradors, picked out in the arctic moonlight as they flew towards him. "This year," continued Prancer, "your helpers will be: Buttons, Goldie, Honey, Sam, Ben, Max, Anton, Lucy and Lassie." Santa and his deer stood and stared up at the approaching dogs, who they could now hear barking. When the dogs landed they became silent; the only noise was the north wind howling. Santa, awed by the sight, was about to speak when the leading dog - Buttons - led a single note chorus of howls as a salute to the reindeer whom they would replace this year. Happy, all the reindeers saluted back and in unison returned to their stables. "Greetings to you, Father Christmas," said Buttons. "Instead of being with our blind owners this year, we want to bring smiles to the faces of all the world's children. We're ready when you are." Santa smiled and beckoned the creatures. He led them to his workshop. Parked outside was a huge sleigh, loaded with presents of all shapes and sizes. A small green-clad elf was just putting the last present on the top; when it was balanced correctly, he slid down and pushed himself off the side and scarpered back into the warmth. Sam, Ben and Honey had already positioned themselves at the front of the sleigh and barked at the other dogs to join them. As they lifted the sleigh's harness Santa said: "Aren't you going to take your own little white harnesses off first?" "Oh no," spoke up Lucy, the smallest of the dogs, "these are our identity. Guiding is what we do and tonight Santa, we will guide you!" With the dogs all in place, Santa climbed onto the front of the sleigh, took the reigns in his hands and boomed merrily at the top of his voice: "Go Buttons ... go Goldie ... go Honey!" The dogs pulled and the sleigh took off into the now clear dark blue sky. "Moosh Sam, gee up Ben, away Max ... away!" Lucy turned and winked at Lassie. They were both wondering how their owners were getting on. They hoped to be back and curled up at the foot of their beds before they awoke, and chuckled at what their masters would think if they knew they were flying around the world helping to deliver presents. "Lucy, Lassie, noses forward!" Santa's voice startled them into action. "Anton, stop trying to eat the falling snow," he continued, before breaking into a very loud and satisfied: "Ho ho ho! Keep flying, my little guides. This year," winked Father Christmas, "your dogs will find out what busy really means." As the sleigh, the jolly old man and the nine magical guiding dogs reached the horizon and flew towards the first of several billion houses on the list, Santa knew that the guide dogs had saved the day and everything would be all right. This is A vary cute Christmas story. ?Merry Christmas everyone.? Tina and Nina ?? ? ?Subject:?? ? ?A Special Christmas Story. From: Sue Harden. Subject: Holiday Beginnings Holiday Beginnings, Christmas, 1998 copyright C 1998, Jenine Stanley Long ago and far away Or at least it seems so from today, A little ball of fur and feet, The Holiday season did gently greet. This pup was special, soon to grow, So many things that he must know. He learned to stay then come and sit, And only minded baths a bit. His legs grew long, his expression wise, As the world unfolded before his eyes. This pup saw stores and parks and malls. He walked through church and workplace halls. All these things were done with care, For important work they did prepare. Dad and the kids walked him about, While Mom gave baths and took him out. One day they went to "Puppy Camp" Where he performed just like a champ! He sat and stayed and came on cue, They said "a fine job he will do!" This pup did not fear loud trucks, Or men with beards, or even ducks! He laid quite still at his family's side, And simply loved to "take a ride." The family talked of one sad day, When their "wonder pup" would go away. They knew that this was meant to be, This well bred dog was meant to "see." That special season came again, Up went the tree and fun began! This year the pup was old enough, To play with kids and other stuff. Just a sniff, to see what's there! Boxes wrapped with such great care! But through the year this dog had learned, Many corrections he had earned. He would not sniff or root around, Or pick things up from off the ground. He'd learned to stay out of the trash, But only after a big old crash! Photos hugs and quiet tears, Filled the days through end of year. And then, right after New Year's Day, That once small pup went on his way. Off to school that puppy went, To learn just what those trainers meant. "Forward." "Good dog." "Left."then "Right." He'd concentrate with all his might. As months went by, the young dog moved, Through repetition he improved. He stopped at curbs and went around, The many obstacles trainers found. Then through the city that smart dog worked, From speeding cars he backward jerked! The trainer told him "Find inside." This meant to look for doorways wide. "Find the counter." "Find a seat." Then lie there at the trainer's feet. They bragged about him on and on. He'd passed the tests. He'd soon be gone! The summer class was almost full, Yet no one there would like his pull. This dog would work the trainer thought, For someone who liked to walk, a lot! That special person was finally found, Just as the snow lay on the ground. The class began December First, Some students said it was the worst! It was hard to spend a month away, Coming home so close to Christmas Day. New dogs were handfuls that first week, This wouldn't due with the holiday peak! The dog remembered trees and such, But thoughts of mischief he gave not much. This was just like any time, Behave yourself and you'd be fine! Meeting his handler was quite a surprise, Though she looked pretty normal, what was wrong with her eyes? She was just like the trainer in the commands that she gave, But he soon discovered she couldn't see him behave. She patted his back and his glossy fine head, Though she could not see his eyes, she could feel him instead. They walked very fast with the trainer behind, This dog showing off all the things he could "find." And once they had walked everywhere that they could, The trainers pronounced this team was quite good! The weekend before Christmas the class got decked out. There was hustle and bustle and rushing about! From his room on that Sunday, the dog could just hear, The sounds of his first family, ever so near. His person had left him on his bed chain to go, Out to the living room so she could know, Who raised him from such an adorable pup, "What was he like then?" "Where did he grow up?" Someday he knew he would see them again, His very first family, it just wouldn't be then. They did send him gifts that all smelled like their home, His toys and his bed and even a bone! The last day of class was a quite sad affair. Before they went home all the students did share. Hugs and thanks to the trainers, emotions did show. "Now you're off on your own." "Now you're ready to go!" The dog and his person went home in a plane, And throughout that first week he heard the refrain, "Leave it." "No, bad dog." "Stop sniffing, right now." He really did want to, but didn't know how. For those first months he tested his person a bit, But as she grew to know him, he showed her his wit. They traveled on planes and buses and cabs, And when they weren't walking, on her he kept tabs. He guided as she walked with her children again, Through malls and to college, around every bend. He liked her new husband and kids and the rest, But the dog knew that always, his person was best. Each year that rolled by saw the holidays near, With so much more meaning because he was here. Small celebrations were held in his name, As "3", "4", and then "8" years passed since they'd trained. He'd gone back to visit his first family's home, Where he'd been allowed off leash to party and roam! He'd been to the mountains and run on the beach, All while guiding his person and loving them each. But now he was tired and his pull was so slight. He laid on his rug from morning till night. Guiding was over, it was too hard to move, But life as a pet did see things improve. A new dog now walked where he had once been, And he happily rested a loving old friend. This night before Christmas he lay by the tree, While the family took pictures, just where he should be. They knew that his days with them were not long, So to the Christmas Eve service, they took him along. His person took out the old harness with care, And placed it around him then stood just right where, She'd found herself standing for walk after walk. To his ear she bent low and then started to talk. "I love you, you know that?" she said with a tear. "And I realize next Christmas, you might not be here." One more time she commanded him, "Forward, outside." The dog lifted his head and his tail wagged so wide. The family moved back and let the team go, This trip was so special, they all seemed to know. For that last night he guided her safe on their way, This devoted partner and friend crossed The Bridge" the next day. Christmas could have been sad, a time none would forget, But the dog's loving family saw something else yet. His person did miss him as by him she knelt, But she kept thinking of all the joy she had felt. She'd walked by herself with confidence and pride, For the first time since her blindness, this dog by her side. They had worked as a team so long and so far, Her independence was his shining star. Each year after that when the holidays came, They remembered this first dog and called him by name. The family told stories and always would say, "We'll each see him again, some Christmas Day!" It talks about The main active ingredient in Bio Spot Permethrin witch is used in more than 18 similar products, including Bayer K9 Advantix, Defend EXspot, and Hartz Control OneSpot). It kills insects by paralyzing their nervous system (that is also how nerve gas works). However, it cannot distinguish between an insect's nervous system, a dog's nervous system, HAS any one hear of this ? Farnam's Bio Spot Flea & Tick Almost Killed Our Dog." Six months ago, my family adopted a one and a half year old Dalmatian, named Hamish. He had been in a high kill shelter in Connecticut, and was rescued just one day before he was scheduled to be destroyed. To protect him from fleas and ticks, we chose Frontline - a liquid that is applied to the dog's back. It gave us peace of mind knowing that he had this protection, but it had to be purchased from a veterinarian and was quite expensive. One day while shopping, I came across an over-the-counter product, called Bio Spot Flea & Tick Control (by Farnam Pet Products). It looked similar to the Frontline product, but it was much cheaper, so I decided to try it. The Bio Spot seemed to work just as well as Frontline, so I used it again six weeks later. An hour after applying the Bio Spot, I found Hamish thrashing about on the ground. His body was completely stiff. His head was raised in the air, and his jaws were opened wide. A thick foamy saliva was spewing from his mouth. Horrified, I tried to determine if something was stuck in his throat. His windpipe was clear, but he was not breathing. His eyes began to roll back in his head. He was dying and I did not know what to do to save him! We made a desperate call to our veterinarian. IF YOU SUSPECT AN ADVERSE REACTION TO A FLEA CONTROL PRODUCT... 1. BATHE YOUR PET WITH MILD SOAP, SUCH A DAWN DISH DETERGENT, AND RINSE WITH LARGE AMOUNTS OF WATER. DO NOT USE FLEA AND TICK SHAMPOO BECAUSE IT CONTAINS PESTICIDE. 2. IF SIGNS CONTINUE (LETHARGY, LOSS OF APPETITE, DROOLING, INCOORDINATION, LABORED BREATHING, INCREASED EXCITABILITY, ELEVATED BODY TEMPERATURE, VOMITING, DIARRHEA, OR SEIZURES), CONSULT A VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY. 3. REPORT IT TO THE MANUFACTURER OF THE PRODUCT AND THE U.S. EPA. After a few minutes, Hamish slowly began to recover. We had just witnessed something we had never seen before - a grand mal (severe) seizure. Our veterinarian said that a blood test might help to find the cause, and mentioned the possibility of epilepsy. By the afternoon, Hamish looked much better, but that night he endured three more grand mal seizures. Why would a healthy dog have four grand mal seizures within twenty hours? I searched the Internet for information on epilepsy, and read that if seizures begin to occur frequently, the animal may have to be euthanized! We would not know the results of the blood test for a week, but we had a feeling it was not epilepsy, and wondered if the seizures were caused by the Bio Spot. It seemed unlikely that Bio Spot could have caused the seizures because we had used it (same batch) just six weeks earlier with no adverse effects. Also, the packaging did not list seizures as a possible adverse reaction (it listed only lethargy, itchiness, redness, rash, hair discoloration, or hair loss). Just in case the seizures were caused by the Bio Spot, we thoroughly washed Hamish to remove as much of it as possible, and took him to our veterinarian for a physical exam and blood test. The exam showed that everything was normal, and the blood test revealed no internal problems. Our veterinarian could not rule out Bio Spot as the cause of the seizures. Hamish has not had any seizures since the Bio Spot was thoroughly washed off three weeks ago, and appears to be in good health. However, we worry about irrepairable damage that may have been done to his neurological system, and wonder if short-term exposure to the chemicals in BioSpot will cause any long-term health problems. CONSUMER ALERT July 14, 2002 How Bio Spot Works According to Farnam's website, the ingredients in Bio Spot "move around your dog's coat by several processes including diffusion and capillary action, and transfer from hair to hair as the pet moves." That may lead you to believe that it remains on your dog's coat, therefore it's safe for your dog. The truth is these harmful chemicals are absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream. That is also how transdermal patches work - they use the skin as a way to enter the body. The main active ingredient in Bio Spot is a pesticide known as Permethrin (it is used in more than 18 similar products, including Bayer K9 Advantix, Defend EXspot, and Hartz Control OneSpot). It kills insects by paralyzing their nervous system (that is also how nerve gas works). However, it cannot distinguish between an insect's nervous system, a dog's nervous system, or a human's nervous system. That is why it is important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling. BY JAMES TERBUSH James TerBush is a designer of educational games, and lives in Pennsylvania. R Serious Risk to Health While never claiming their Bio Spot product is safe for dogs, the Farnam website states, "Nearly all dogs tolerate Bio Spot well." However, that does not mean it is safe for ANY dog. The word "tolerate" means to bear, endure, or suffer. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council: "Many and perhaps most Americans believe that commercially available pesticides, such as those found in pet products, are tightly regulated by the government. In fact, they are not. Not until the passage of a 1996 law focused on pesticides in food did the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) begin examining the risks from pesticides in pet products in earnest. To this day, the EPA allows the manufacture and sale of pet products containing hazardous insecticides with little or no demonstration that a child's exposure to these ingredients would be safe. Just because these products are on store shelves does not mean they have been tested or can be presumed safe." "Of course, as bad as these products may be for pet owners and caregivers, they often are worse for the pets themselves. Based on the very limited data available, it appears that hundreds and probably thousands of pets have been injured or killed through exposure to pet products containing pesticides. As with small children, pets cannot report when they're being poisoned at low doses." __._,_.___ Messages in this topic (1) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Messages | Calendar MARKETPLACE _____ Earn your degree in as few as 2 years - Advance your career with an AS, BS, MS degree - College-Finder.net.
