Subject: dog safety reminder and emergency preparedness

This article is not about a guide dog, but it serves
as a great reminder on thinking ahead when it comes to
the things we keep around and which our dogs might
play with. It also is an encouragement for us to
become aware of how to help our dogs in an emergency
situation.

Quick-thinking owner saves dog

WEST CHESTER TWP - Luc Bedard knew just what to do
when his dog, Mandi, rolled onto her back and choked
on a small ball as they romped in the backyard.

Bedard, who has been taking CPR classes since he was
12 at the urging of his mother, a nurse, tried to give
Mandi the Heimlich Maneuver.

But the 160-pound dog was too big for that to work.
She was frantic, literally choking to death, and
wouldn't stay still.

Then, the English Mastiff passed out from lack of air.

Desperate to save her, he thrust his hand down her
throat to try to pull the tennis-sized ball up while
also pushing it up from the outside.

The ball popped out, and he blew air into her lungs by
placing his mouth over her nose.

She revived and is fine.

"It was just so scary," the 41-year-old tattoo artist
said today in an interview from his West Chester home
as he recounted Sunday's ordeal.

"You are in a situation where you know the animal is
panicking because they can't breathe. Any of us know
what it's like when you can't breathe. It's the
worst situation."

He wasn't squeamish about covering his dog's nose with
his mouth.

"It didn't matter," he said. "It was no different than
me putting my hand down her throat. I was trying to
help. It's just like a member of your family.
You do what you can to help them."

Bedard and his wife have only had Mandi and her
brother, Bear, about three months.

The dogs are part of the family, which includes their
3 1/2 year-old son, Eli, and two other dogs, Rue and
Ben.

The couple is throwing out all small toys.

"All toys are going to be the size of her head so it's
guaranteed she won't swallow them," Bedard said.
